Rodent detection for Home Assistant

The thought occurred to me today that my cat can detect the high frequencies that rodents emit, but there is no product that can do this.

I think the closest you can get right now are bat detection devices, but even those aren't compatible with smart homes. You can also get ultra sonic emitters, but not the opposite that can actually hear ultra sonic sounds, and absolutely nothing that can connect to home assistant.

Someone should make one - I don't trust my cat! I think he's sleeping on the job.

Edit: OMG! You guys are funny! :-)

THIRDREALITY Zigbee Night Light: Can I use it to show a colour on a certain trigger (Garage open)?

Hi,

Does anyone know if I can use that device to show the colour red when our garage door is open and separately use the motion sensor and nightlight function? So essentially can I override the nightlight function upon garage door being open? I am planning to use zigbee.

This is the device I am referring to: https://amzn.eu/d/hEUgnjg

Writing yaml with ChatGPT & Claude

For anyone with very limited coding skills like myself, I’ve found that Claude works far better than ChatGPT and requires less revisions.

I even have the paid version of ChatGPT through my work and still find the free version of Claude to be better.

I’ve been able to create some cool automations with Claude that I never could have come up with on my own.

Home Assistant Card

For at least 2+ years now, I've wanted to create my own card. I started with building a template from watching several YouTube videos (One of the better YouTube channels that I learned how to build templates: https://www.youtube.com/@My\_Smart\_Home \- Highly Recommend Subscribing to his channel)

I finally got around to building a card that essentially makes the Template I've been using for years significantly easier to add new entities, and was curious on anyone's suggestions? This is purely a project to have fun with and learn from. I'm currently going through the process of refactoring since I initially added everything to the same card (Claude helping a lot with refactoring, albeit that has its own challenges)

The main objective with this card.

1. Something easy for the misses to turn on/off lights (Primary Objective)
2. Ability to view all entities within a room - If we paid for them, might as well use them.
3. Check if sensors or any entities in a Room need to be updated/low battery - Or else I have fun with trying to figure out why an entity is unresponsive later on.
4. Can easily view all Cards for the Room, on an iPhone

The types of entities for the card (It's a bullshit name, but for now Unified Room Card)

1. Name
2. Icon/Background (In Button Card this is img_cell)
1. Because many of us have Automation's, there's an animation for the Icon to Spin, and do a 360 degree based on the amount of seconds you input. My idea was if you have an animation for the Lights to turn on if motion is detected, you could set up the time for the seconds to turn off, essentially turning the Icon into a timer.
3. Card Appearance: The Border entity is to change the Border color based on a specific Entity. I personally use these for Cards that just have an Icon (Stairs, Bathrooms, etc.) to detect change color based on Motion.
4. Climate - I've merged the Climate (Temperature, Humidity, Illuminance, & Power together
5. On the Bottom Right, there's 2 different types of entities to add:
1. Persistent Entities: Any Entity you want always displayed. Example: Deadbolt, Doors, Windows.
2. Intermittent Entities: Any Entity you want displayed only when active/on. Example: Motion Detection, etc.
1. There's a section for Batteries & Updates as well, by default, these are added to the Intermittent Entities. However, if you want to create your own grid, you can move them around via the Grid Layout Section.

Like I've mentioned, if there's any cool ideas, suggestions, I'd be interested in hearing!

5. Type: Dashboard
6. Add
7. Download/Install Version v2.0.1

Home-Assistant from European retailers

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to share a quick tip for those of you (who, like me) are trying to avoid Amazon and prefer keeping money within the EU.
I recently wanted to get the Home Assistant Green to finally run my smart home (solar, heating, etc.) locally and without cloud dependencies. My first reflex was, of course, to check Amazon.
However, it was only available through third-party sellers, partly priced over €140, with unclear delivery times.
After a quick search, I found it at Alza.
The Price: €109.90 (so roughly €30 cheaper).
The Origin: Alza is a Czech company. This means revenue and taxes stay within the EU instead of flowing directly to the US.
Logistics: Since they have warehouses near the border and in Austria, I often get my stuff the very next day.
It's a small victory, but it felt good to support a European neighbor rather than the usual giant.
For anyone currently looking for hardware: It’s really worth checking out local or neighboring EU retailers (like Alza or Electronic4You here in Austria) instead of clicking "Buy Now" at Bezos' place out of habit.
Where do you guys buy your tech when you want to avoid the big players?

Learning HA

Hey guys, I have been using HA for about a year now and I have really been enjoying it. As I continue to develop my automation skills I want to ensure I am following good practices. Are there any guides on HA best practices that you would recommend. Also I like learning about new ways to create automations. Do you guys have any favorite videos, website, blogs, etc?

Best Water leak Sensor

Just getting together the remaining supplies for my HA system. Got some ZWA-2 and ZBT-2 antennas for Christmas and will be picking up a mini pc off marketplace here later this week to run it. I already have some Zwave/Zigbee capable locks, thermostat and a Konnected alarm panel to utilize.

However I was looking at getting some water sensors as well for the furnace room and around some appliances. I noticed the ikea Badring gets pretty good reviews for battery life as well as the audible alarm and budget friendly. It seems they have been discontinued in Canada. Is there anything equivalent/comparable, or should I try to get a friend south of the border to pick me up a few as the US still have them in stock.

Thanks

Does such a thing exist? I can’t find it online but maybe there’s a specialized store I can buy from? Thank you

PSA: Re-enable local control on Hills/DAS ComNav

This post is probably for a VERY niche user base however I thought I'd post it here in case anyone has the same issue I did (or for me to find later when it happens again years from now)

The ComNav is a module for DAS/Hills branded Alarm Systems that allows access via the UltraConnect mobile app using cloud servers. It also has a web interface for configuration and control over LAN. The UltraSync integration uses this interface to bring control to Home Assistant.

My automations stopped working late 2025 and from what I can tell this was due to a forced remote firmware update that disabled local control. I could not access the web interface of the unit. A message was presented saying "403 Access Denied: SSL Required". Using Https for the IP did not respond.

After resetting the unit to defaults it presented the same error, however as it reset the web access passcode to 00000000 I was no longer able to control the system with their cloud app, nor was I able to change that web access password.

The solution:

The installation manual lists the settings in Location 19 Segment 1. Options 2 and 3 in the manual say "Do not change" with no explaination. As my unit was essentially bricked, I turned off 2 to see what would happen. Low and behold, the system came back to life. I was able to log into the web interface and Home Assistant could connect again.

I assume that segment is for some sort of SSL requirement or Disable Local control.

Steps for a Hills TouchNav control panel (from memory, may be wrong)

1. Press Menu, Settings, and enter in the installer pin code
2. Press Program
3. Enter 191 to enter the ComNav device
4. Enter 19 for the location
5. In Segment 1, disable option 2
6. Exit. System will restart and access should be restored.

I'm now blocking the ComNav from phoning home in my firewall.

Hope that helps someone!

20” tablet / display for wall

Hi all,

I am prepping and building my new home at the moment with home automation being on top of my priorities

I am looking for a 20/21” tablet to mount on the wall that can display home automation metrics and also control lights / aircon / display solar abd energy use etc.

Any recommendations on a good tablet / terminal to use?

I’ve so far only really seen the Sony tap 20/21 as viable - but thy are quite old (intel gen 4 )

Any advice would be appreciated

I'm starting a new smart home, what technology/protocol should I choose?

I'm starting a new smart home using Home Assistant (that I've installed in proxmox).

I haven't yet bought any additional devices for my house, beyond the existing hue lights and sensors that I have.

There is zigbee, thread, matter. I don't know which way to go.

If you were starting again, what's the right direction in 2026?
Thanks
