A Very Short/Quick Post-Announcement Update - Orbitiny Desktop Pilot 9 (Repackaged)

This is a very quick follow up update to my Pilot 9 release announcement yesterday. If you tried to download the file but were unable to start the desktop, I'd like to let you know that the issue is now fixed. I have repacked the tar file with the fix included.

One user (only) notified me yesterday that they were unable to start the desktop on a specific distribution. This is now fixed and it was caused by a missing library file. I have included the missing library file, have tested it and it now starts up like it should.

I overlooked this file because Qt5 did not require it but Qt6 does but when I tested the package locally, it worked so it stayed undetected and I tested it on multiple distros.

That's all. So to all who tested it but experienced the issue, it is now fixed. If you have further issues, please notify me and I will fix it.

Dude holy sh*t every time I have a problem with this OS but then find a solution and get it right, I feel like a fking demon

And it's literally like some dude on youtube saying "type this into the terminal" and I'm just sitting there doing exactly what they say, but afterwards, when it works, I feel like a hacker god.

It's so rewarding having a problem and then you solve the problem and your shit works.
It's like I just want it to be easy, like windows, just works, but when I just put in the small amount of work required it's always sooo worth it, especially having such a nice OS like this rather than dog windows.

And every time I get some little thing right I fall more and more in love with my system. Really feels like it's MINE.

Anyway, big shout-out to this community, ya'll rock

Amazing how far linux has come!

Hi all,

I was just thinking about how far Linux has come.

I remember getting my first PC in the 90s — a 486 DX50 — and trying to put Red Hat on it. Even getting hold of a CD back then (especially in Australia) was a mission in itself. Then came figuring out drivers, wrestling with X just to get a desktop, and hoping you picked the right video card option.

Choosing between KDE and GNOME felt like a big decision. If you really wanted to rice things up, you’d run Enlightenment on top of GNOME. Multiple virtual desktops blew my mind at the time — it felt genuinely futuristic.

I even tried compiling my own kernel and broke my system more times than I can count. Frustrating, educational, and honestly… a lot of fun.

Over the years I kept trying to switch to Linux permanently, but something always dragged me back to Windows — usually work or software compatibility.

Now though, with Proton and so many applications being web-based, I think I’ve finally made the move for good. I still keep a Windows VM around for the odd work-specific app, but I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything anymore.

If anything, it’s the opposite. These days, not using Linux feels like a performance hit. Going back to Windows just feels sluggish and buggy by comparison.

Anyway, not sure there’s a point to this post — just feeling a bit nostalgic and no one I know would really understand this post, lol.

Recently migrated to Linux/ First Linux Application (Elgato lights controller)

Last week I decided to give Linux a try for the first time in about a decade due to my growing frustrations with Windows. (I am using Bazzite with KDE) I have been recreating my set up and getting all of the tools and apps that I use on the daily for gaming, content, and development work.

I was essentially able to get everything I use on windows with one exception. Elgato doesn't have a version of control center for Linux so I can't control the lights. This pushed me straight into my first development cycle on Linux. I created a simple daemon and controller gui to fill this hole in the ecosystem. I hope to additionally create a plugin from here that will allow these controls to be run on open deck as well. If anyone else uses Elgato lights enjoy!

It can either be build from the source code or run as a flatpak.

Is it common to have nightmares about Windows installing itself back on my computer?

Sometimes i have those nightmares where Windows survived somewhere in the darkest corners of my hard disk. Then it overrides my boot order and boots itself instead my Ubuntu, wiping out my distro completely.

Those dreams aren't that stupid, since i've heard stories about Windows not liking being on dual boot with Linux systems

Ubuntu Touch

TL;DR: I have a Fairphone 5 on Verizon in the US and am looking to switch to Ubuntu Touch, and am looking for others who use/have used this OS to share their experience. Overall user experience or other suggestions are welcome.

Also hoping this doesn't break rule one, looking for discussion on Ubuntu Touch as a whole even though I'm providing a lot of "me" specific detail.

So I am doing what I can to move into Linux/open source OS and programs as much as I can. My biggest hangup has been with my phone. I get quite a bit of entertainment and media from my phone as well as using it for my main form of communication and I haven't looked much into Linux Mobile after seeing a few videos a year or so ago showcasing Linux phones and they were clunky at best.

But now I just saw a video about Ubuntu Touch, and it looks smooth, the video creator says it does phone things like calls and texts, but didn't touch on much more. I'm concerned about my experience (or lack therof) with Linux and about my ability to revert back to Android if things don't workout.

My experience with Linux is limited; I have used Kubuntu on my desktop primarily for gaming since the end of 2024, but I switched to Bazzite a few months ago because I kept having issues on Kubuntu (so far Bazzite has just worked for 99.9% of what I am doing). Issues like my OS seemingly corrupting to the point it won't boot and needing to completely reimage the machine, not being able to figure out how to install programs (most often their dependencies) without getting errors I just don't have the knowledge to solve and couldn't find solutions on forums, etc.

I primarily use my phone for calls, texts, GPS navigation, note keeping, calendar, camera, important apps like my bank info and insurance, reddit, tiktok, and occasionally youtube. I know many of these will likely not be on Ubuntu Touch as apps and I will need to view them in a web browser, and I am prepared for that. What scares me most, is I only have one phone and not enough money to get a new one should things go really south.

I have a Fairphone 5, which the Ubuntu Touch touts as it's most supported device. Thing is, I live in the US, and the phone already had asterisks in its denoscription when I bought it saying service is not guaranteed due to it being designed mainly for the European market. I have only had minimal issues with connections so far after over a year of use, but rarely I have to turn my sim off and on again to get it to connect to towers. I also don't know if different carriers will have issues with the different OS or not, I currently have Verizon. Not looking for solutions to these, just think it's important to mention in case people using a FP5 are from Europe.

Just hoping to hear some more experiences from people that have used Linux mobile before I decide to try and make the jump and accidentally effectively brick my phone.

What's your backup distro?

I posted this first in r/Fedora, but I thought I'd drop this here too to get a broader response. What if, for whatever reason, your Linux distribution of choice were to just blip out of existence, or fall due to poor morals, or whatever else that could ruin it? What distro would you go to next? I've been using Fedora for well over a decade at this point and the question recently popped up to me. Like in r/Fedora, I think I'd go with openSUSE, independent forks exist, so I might go with Bazzite. I also have a Steam Deck so SteamOS is viable too.
