How tough is it really to land a remote dev role?

I’ve been working remotely as a JavaScript developer for about 4 years, but I still remember how confusing it was trying to break in. Family and friends didn’t get it. They’d ask things like “When do you go to work?” or “What do you actually do all day?” even while I was debugging code or reviewing docs.

The bigger challenge, though, was finding legit remote opportunities. So many listings turned out to be ghost jobs, outdated posts, or just noise. That’s why I’ve been paying attention to projects like Humaboam, which tries a different approach by building a community‑driven API of verified jobs.

It made me wonder: for those of you who’ve landed remote roles recently, how hard was the process? Did you rely on traditional boards, referrals, or newer tools?
