Eccentric main character, preferably detective fiction
I’m looking for either standalone novels or series, who portray an eccentric, intelligent main character. Would prefer more contemporary authors but will consider all.
I read the Holmes books by Conan Doyle and would love something similar!

tell me the books that changed you
Last year I read 101 books but this year I want to read over 50,000 pages (focusing on enjoying the book enough to be down to read more)
So these can be long or short but just enjoyable
Books I’ve enjoyed immensely (ranging in so many genres)
- the song of achillies
- everything is tuberculosis
- magnolia parks series
- Eleanor oliphant is completely fine
- throne of glass, acotar, serpent & wings of the night
- The alchemist
I can read anything from economics histories to horror and Christmas romances
I want a book that’ll leave me feeling like I’ve just had the best cake in the world but I’m sad because what if I can never have it again

Books about or set during the times of the IRA. Nonfiction and literary fiction are fine
Hello, I was hoping there were at least a few books about the IRA or set during the peak of their time. I’m alright with nonfiction books about it, but also wouldn’t mind some form of literary fiction.
Anything like that out there that you’d recommend?

Best "girly" books that don't have anything to do with men or relationships?
Could you please recommend me such books, ideally with almost no tension? 🌞

Books like Anne of Green Gables but with POC?
I love cozy, classic historical coming-of-age stories like Anne of Green Gables and Little House on the Prairie. I’d love to read something in that same vein but centered on a girl of color/POC family or community. Anything Middle grade and above please!! (not required, but also a little romance would be appreciated)

I just read Piranesi, SMAB!
I picked up a (non-academic) book after quite a while (about 8 years), Piranesi, and I absolutely loved it - the world-building, the plot, the characters and I really appreciated how the author was in no hurry to let the plot develop. It's been a while so I don't have a strong idea about what I should read - the last book I remember loving was Catch-22 - so perhaps a book that has a more comedic element to it? Just throwing it out there...

TW: I feel like there should be a manual or something for this situation
I just survived a suicide attempt, what do I do now? I have no idea what I'm allowed to feel or not. I'm under constant surveillance by the nurses and my family. I feel like I'm in limbo. I just feel lost, confused, guilty, annoyed, I want to go home but I can't. Please reccomend me something to read for these grueling hours that go by like days.

Suggest my STUDENTS a book!
I teach 9th grade at an all-girls school. Each year I make a list of YA novels they can choose from for an independent reading assignment. They typically love this assignment.
I’m looking for 3-4 YA novels, around 250-350ish pages, that follow a female teenage protagonist. I like picking books that they’d more likely encounter on their own, but still have strong literary merit and powerful themes.
I’m definitely going to include Piecing Me Together (Renee Watson.) Looking for similar vibes, but the books don’t all have to be realistic fiction. I like to include at least one dystopian or fantasy novel.
Novels can reference some more-mature topics like sex & drugs/alcohol, but not too heavily by any means. Should be appropriate for 14-15 year olds. Romance/love interests are okay, but I kind of love that Piecing Me Together has no love interests whatsoever!
In the past, I’ve used Speak (Laurie Halse Anderson), The Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins), I’m Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter (Erika L. Sanchez), The Hate U Give (Angie Thomas), Matched (Ally Condie), Red Queen (Victoria Aveyard), and The Poet X (Elizabeth Acevedo).
I might reuse a book from years past, but trying to switch it up! Thanks in advance for your recommendations :)

any books for learning not to be desperate?
28F, been single my entire life. Every date I have or guy I meet is not looking for anything serious. I feel like the desperation for wanting a partner/relationship is consuming me. It’s at the forefront of my mind 24/7. I feel desperate and needy and pathetic, which obviously doesn’t help loneliness, because no one wants to be around someone who’s as desperate as me. So. Are there any books on dealing with this?

“Literary” novels with exciting plots
Basically, novels with gripping, engaging, eventful, page-turning plots, that are also generally considered more on the “literary” than the “genre” side of things. They don’t need to be highbrow, just well-written. Any era, classic or contemporary.
I know this is pretty broad so go in whatever direction feels right to you!

What is the most suspenseful nonfiction book you've read?
I'm looking for true crazy stories. I recently finished Say Nothing and I'm having a hard time finding something that pulls me in as much as that book did. I'm open to autobiographies as well. For example, I loved I'm glad my mom died by Jeanette McCurdy. This can be any genre so all suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

History books for a COMPLETE history noob
I was never a history person. There are things that people might think are very common knowledge but I have no clue about. Things like WWI, WWII, the soviet union, the Roman Empire, Alexander the great, Ancient Egypt etc
My level of knowledge in those subjects is weaker than one can imagine. I never took history in school and never bothered to read about it, so assume I literally know 0 about the subject. What are some well written history books that arent a bore to read but also provide a good foundation for the topic they're discussing.
