Al-Barnawi's father, Muhammad Yusuf, was the founding leader of Boko Haram, the extremist group that has waged an insurgency for more than a decade.
The violence spread to Niger, Cameroon and neighboring Chad, destabilizing the Lake Chad region.
Al-Barnawi has long clashed with the man who succeeded his father, Abu Bakr Shekau, and defected in 2016 to form the Islamic State - West Africa Province.
