GAPPS - HATE OR LOVE?

Android sub Reddit sure is one confused set of people. I DON'T even remember how many times I have read that all the Google apps preinstalled on Android devices are bloatware. Heck, the news that YouTube music being preinstalled is being received with so much hate.

And then when Huawei is forced to release a phone without GApps people don't want to buy it just because they are not having GApps preinstalled. What's up people? 😅...

Are compact flagships dead?

When I have to buy a new smartphone, I always knew what specs it must've had to be considered a viable option. For the last 15 months or so I am enjoying my OnePlus 5T. Previous one was a Nexus 4.

An iPhone SE user friend asked me about Android phones and told me he'd like a new phone. I asked what was the go to specs he wanted and what would be a deal breaker. His requests put me in a very tough spot and I can't find any phone in those constraints.

He asks a flat body (both back and front) 1...

Why is custom ROM scene split into creating so many variations of the same thing?

tl;dr: there's a lot of ROMs built on the same version of Android with the same set of features, why?

Android has many flavors, as pretty much every producent having its own. Yet most of the scene is focused on creating AOSP builds. For my current Redmi Note 7 there is a dozen, with very little differences like few extra customization options, reordered settings for those and a different kernel.
Bigger, more known ROMs are focused around certain ideas, like LineageOS oriented on Google-less, pr...

With no wrong answers, what are your personal top 3 phones in terms of looks?

For me personally:

3. Pixel 2 XL (Reverse) Panda - if someone asked me to picture a modern phone in my head, without thinking, the design would look a lot like it, it just looks like a phone and the symmetrical bezels, dual speakers and even camera position and size seem just right. Combine that with the gorgeous mix of colours and the contours of the frame and back, it was certainly a looker of a phone

2. Meizu 16S - even with the war on bezels, this phone somehow manages to keep them there ...

Benchmarks and CPU performance are far more relevant on mid-range phones over flagships, in my opinion.

When you're on the market for a mid-range phone, you would want decent performance out of it for at least two, maybe three, four, five years. All flagships meet this criteria nicely, so in my opinion a much more interesting showdown is on the mid-range. I would care much more about a Snapdragon 675 vs a Helio P70, P90 or something over the 855+ vs Kirin 990. Personally I really like the Mate 30 Pro despite being overshadowed by the future 865. What do you guys think?...

Just ordered a replacement for my first smartphone. How often do you change phones?

Couple years ago I got a job where I needed a smartphone with gps and whatsapp. Against my will I then purchased my first smartphone.

At first it seemed like a gadget, but became part of my life. Bank transactions, instant communication with my work team, gps for driving around town (and remembering later where I was each day), redditing on my slack hours, spotify when I'm on the gym, chilling in bed (using bluetooth to my home sound system). How did I ever live without this?

I think I even g...

(Opinion) Android Customisation is what keeps me invested.

I've been on the Android platform since my HTC Desire many years back.

Although I've always been impressed by the sickness of Apple experience, the restrictions imposed by that particular walled garden has meant I've never been tempted.

For me, Android's strength has always been the continuing facility for near infinite tweaking, from the common elements like widgets and live wallpapers, to things like Substratum, Tasker, Xposed etc.

This freedom allows for those of us who can't resist a sett...
