I don't love Google's lukewarm commitment to unified messaging... but I get it. Maybe.

So Soltero said straight up that part of his job is to provide clarity around how these pieces under his umbrella "fulfill specific Missions." Some variant of that has been Google's talking point for a while, but it really seems like in this case it's an explicit statement that cohesion doesn't mean unification.

I was trying to step outside the debacle of messaging and thought about maps. Specifically, Maps and Earth. In a lot of ways they have similar functionality and overlap, and in fact h...

Reading battery health statistics (actual capacity, cycle count) through ADB

I haven't seen that mentioned around here but you can actually get a reading on various battery stats through ADB.

$ adb shell
coral:/ $ cat /sys/class/power_supply/battery/cycle_count
113
coral:/ $ cat /sys/class/power_supply/battery/charge_full
3664000

So my Pixel 4 XL still has 3664 mAh after 6 months of use and 113 cycles.

It seems the reading comes from the Maxim fuel gauge chip. Some other devices might have a different sysfs path, like `/sys/class/power_supply/bms`....

What are your thoughts on a modular smartphone?

I came up with a concept that isn't as flashy as ARA. The idea is you can change and add accordingly, and there will be magnetic slots like ARA. Your can downgrade/add components based on price (ex go from 1440p 120 to a 1080p 90) and can upgrade by a concept of missing parts. I one it might sound bar, but say you don't want a telephoto, you can excluded and not pay for it. Simple have a base of 700ish dollars, like 15 dollars for a macro cam, etc. Ideas for modules,: heart rate sensor, dual dis...

Notification center on future Android versions

Notification center in Android can be so much better if we could divide apps into groups like news, messaging, social, games etc and each group having a separate tab on notification screen. That way we can first create a news group and then separate News notifications from youtube notifications from facebook notifications from WhatsApp notifications.

Google should start working on fixing this last bit of notification center puzzle when almost everything else has settled in, in Android. Agree o...
