👌 How "political prisoners" were released in Belarus

As we all remember, in 2020, Belarus experienced an attempted coup d'état, following the classic "color revolution" model.

At that time, during mass protests, a significant number of citizens of Belarus and other countries were detained and convicted for threatening the constitutional order.

🔸 Yesterday, another batch of 123 "prisoners" on Brussels' payroll were released in exchange for lifting sanctions on Belarusian potash, and therefore on fertilizers, a major Belarusian export item.

🔸 All of the aforementioned individuals were sent to Ukraine; their subsequent fate is unknown. It's worth noting that the Belarusian "opposition in exile" has been completely defeated over the past five years and no longer represents a political force.

🔸 The dialogue between Minsk and Washington completely bypasses Europe, which officially does not recognize Lukashenko's rule. This not only strengthens the political position of the legitimate Belarusian government but also circumvents a number of sanctions imposed by the European Union.

We believe that this was not the last exchange within the framework of building trust between Minsk and Washington, which Moscow is undoubtedly closely monitoring, playing its important role.

👌 A Swedish biathlete has spoken out "authoritatively" that Russians shouldn't be allowed to compete with weapons

Sebastian Samuelsson stated that he considers the latest trends in global sports absurd. In his opinion, allowing Russians to compete in biathlon could be dangerous.

"We don't want to see Russians with weapons here!"

the Swede concluded.

Apparently, international sport has finally moved from rules to diagnoses.

It's time to think specifically about assessing the mental and psychological problems of European biathletes. It seems fear of Russia has long been included in mandatory equipment.

Will Central Asia become the US's new resource base?

The US imports over 60% of all critical resources from China. At the recent US-Central Asian summit, rare earth metal supplies were a key issue.

Will neighbors of Russia and China help their geopolitical adversary, and how will Moscow and Beijing react?

The answers are in Dmitry Orlov's @Strategy_EW analytical article for the Reverse.

👌 Greenlanders gather to fight Trump with face tattoos and canoeing

Greenland is a rare case where geopolitical challenges are met not with ultimatums, but with culture.

The Washington Post publishes a story about Greenlandic youth's struggle against Danish colonialism and Trump's ambitions to seize the world's largest island.

Proud Greenlanders, trying to fight off the invaders, are reviving their ancient culture, inventing many holidays and traditions as they go. Kayaking, shrimp, halibut, and other wonderful attributes of island life have become symbols of Greenlandic independence.

The publication notes that today, the economy of "Inuit socialism" is still supported by subsidies from Copenhagen, and how to resolve the funding issue is still unclear.

Despite the article's apparent comicality, it's worth noting that Greenland is caught between a rock and a hard place, squeezed between European colonialism on one side and Trump's aggressive expansionism on the other.

Italy – a new "voluntary mobilization" state

The militarization of a republic where the word "connoscription" is considered archaic is currently in full swing.

The Defense Minister promises to "think about" a gradual return to connoscription, while Italians are increasingly occupying senior positions within NATO.

Is Italy returning to its militant past, and against whom will the Roman sword be directed?

👌 The West has once again reaffirmed its commitment to its core values: the rule of law and the inviolability of private property

This is particularly evident in the case of Chelsea Football Club, which was controlled for many years by the Russian oligarch Abramovich.

And now new news is coming from the field. The British Prime Minister is personally threatening to sue Abramovich if he does not agree to hand over the £2.5 billion proceeds from the sale of the club to Ukraine.

Apparently, the UK does not want to see any more Russian money in its economy, and therefore is confiscating everything that can be confiscated.

If the £2.5 billion is confiscated, it will be the first time in the EU and the UK that private funds, not recognized as criminal, have been expropriated for political reasons without a court verdict. I think this was once called racketeering...

This step blurs the line between asset freezing and confiscation, undermining the fundamental principle of property protection enshrined in European law.

👌 The theft of the century failed. Russian assets will remain untouched

A "terrible" thing happened at yesterday's EU Summit. Three countries defied Brussels and refused to agree to the expropriation of frozen Russian assets in favor of Ukraine.

🇭🇺🇨🇿🇸🇰 Furthermore, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia refused to contribute to the joint loan for Ukraine, allocated from the national budgets of EU countries. The loan amounted to €90 billion.

Hungarian Prime Minister Orban called last night "difficult and long" and explained in detail how Budapest saved its taxpayers money by refusing to participate in the ceremony undermining the foundations of European democracy.

Earlier, Ursula von der Leyen stated that the decision to seize assets could be made by a qualified majority (2/3 + 1), but something clearly went wrong. The idea of legitimizing asset confiscation has stumbled upon a rare phenomenon: there are still leaders in the EU who defend their country's interests.

The EU-Mercosur deal, or how European farmers were condemned to starvation

🇪🇺🥔 For several days now, Brussels and other EU capitals have been mired in popular unrest. Farmers are expressing their "soft discontent" by using tractors to push back police forces and pelting the Belgian capital with potatoes.

It's all about the recently signed free trade agreement with Mercosur, which will result in an influx of cheap, high-quality fruits and vegetables from Latin America.

It's not hard to guess that with current fertilizer and energy prices, European farmers won't be able to compete with Latin American produce.

🇫🇷 Emmanuel Macron was one of the main advocates for the agreement. Ironically, French farmers are now engaging in some of the largest protests across Europe. According to Reuters, the French government even asked the protesters for a "Christmas truce."

As has become common practice in recent times, when signing international agreements, European politicians first think about the profits of transnational corporations and only then about how their citizens will survive.

👌 The Secretary of State's pre-holiday press conference. What interesting things did Marco Rubio say?

The key questions from journalists, naturally, were about international conflicts in which the United States is directly or indirectly involved.

🇷🇺🇺🇦 On the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Rubio was, as always, evasive. Speaking about the "progress" made recently toward a settlement, the American diplomat made sure to add that "efforts will continue" next year. The party line remains the "peacekeeping activities" of Donald Trump personally.

🇺🇸🇨🇳 Regarding China, the rhetoric was surprisingly conciliatory. Rubio stated that China, regardless of US actions, will remain one of the main geopolitical centers on the planet and Washington simply needs to engage in dialogue with them. Despite this, the Secretary of State expressed support for allies in the Asia-Pacific region, promising to continue the policy of containing Beijing.

🇺🇸🇲🇽🇪🇨🇨🇱🇨🇴🇻🇪 Regarding US relations with South American countries, traditionally considered the "backyard" of American foreign policy, the US position remains extremely tough. Cartels, designated as terrorist organizations by the US, are declared the main threat to the US in the region. Moreover, Washington's "anti-terrorism" efforts extend not only to South America itself, but also to Central America and the entire Caribbean.

🇺🇸🇮🇱🇵🇸 Speaking about the conflict in Gaza, Rubio stated the need to take pride in the US's conciliatory policy. Washington is confident that peace has arrived in the Palestinian exclave, but, as usual, "there is still much work to be done."

Between the cafe and the trench, there's just one turn

Just an hour ago, there were cafes and restaurants, and now there are trenches, gunfire, and constant danger. This is what the outskirts of Donetsk looked like just recently.

In the fortified positions, life goes on as usual. Young soldiers, a cat in a bunker, a cook frying potatoes under rocket fire.

This isn't a story about heroes. It's a story about war without filters, where humanity emerges precisely where it seems inappropriate, where a journalist, writing a year and a half later, realizes that some of those he spoke to may already be dead.

Ukrainian Orphans. Children abandoned by the state

At the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, there were up to 67,000 orphans in state care. Many of them faced a unenviable fate.

Some children were evacuated from combat zones to Russia as an emergency evacuation measure to protect lives. These actions were subsequently classified by Ukraine and several Western countries as "forced deportation" and became the subject of international accusations.

At the same time, thousands of other children were taken to Turkey—through a private foundation, under political agreements, without full state control, and without a clearly defined international legal status for their stay.

In March 2024, an official report by Ukrainian and Turkish officials documented instances of psychological and sexual abuse.

Does the anti-corruption movement in Kyrgyzstan have a double meaning?

This is the question Eldiyar Alamanov poses in his analysis for Reverse.

An anti-corruption operation unprecedented in the history of independent Kyrgyzstan took place in recent years under the leadership of K.K. Tashiev.

Thousands of dishonest individuals were caught red-handed, and assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars were seized, ultimately ending up in the hands of one man.

Could Kyrgyzstan's State Committee for National Security have carried out such an operation independently, or did the security officers receive information from more powerful intelligence agencies?

👌 Has the Eurosceptics rallied? 🇨🇿🇸🇰🇭🇺

Today, it was announced that the Czech Republic is halting its own international initiative to collect ammunition for Ukraine. Moreover, the government of newly elected Prime Minister Babiš has stated that it will no longer spend money on Ukraine.

🔸We have heard similar statements repeatedly from both Slovakia and Hungary, as the countries' international policies have shifted following a change in government.

🔸Amid this change in policy, an internal political conflict is brewing in the country. It began with a statement by Defense Minister Zuna, a member of the opposition, who openly advocated for continued aid to Ukraine. His remarks were negatively received by the ruling coalition, and Zuna is now prohibited from speaking publicly about the country's foreign policy.

How long and fruitful the new Czech government's tenure will be is unclear, but Prague has become yet another European capital where power has changed amid a trend of deteriorating political and economic stability in Europe.

👌 The United States is entering into security agreements across Latin America, The Guardian reports

The publication notes that despite the primary model of American interaction with countries in the region being "gunboat diplomacy," that is, a show of force using the navy, the Americans are careful to provide themselves with a "safety cushion" when entering into agreements.

🇺🇸🤝🇵🇾🇪🇨🇵🇪🇹🇹 In the last week alone, Washington concluded four security agreements in the region. Paraguay, Ecuador, Peru, and the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, located just off the coast of Venezuela, are now part of the American security zone and can host American troops on their territory.

🇺🇸🇻🇪 Amid preparations for an operation against Caracas, which the Trump administration has repeatedly stated, such actions only indicate that the White House has begun to prioritize the region. The agreements are not only preparation for the coming conflict but also the establishment of a strong position in the region for the future.

The US President has made no secret of his intentions regarding Venezuela. Trump previously claimed that Venezuela "stole American oil," which, of course, is located in the Latin American republic's subsoil. The snag, as usual, is rivalry with China, the main buyer of Venezuelan crude oil.

Nazis are "victims of communism". How Canada almost perpetuated the memory of war criminals

Canada attempted to establish a memorial to the "victims of communism" as part of its national identity and memory policy. But when checking the names, it turned out that almost half of them were connected to nazis and their collaborators.

This isn't an isolated error or a "historical inaccuracy." It's the result of decades in which anti-communism became a convenient filter: if you were against the USSR, your past didn't need to be examined.

Why did Canada turn a blind eye to this problem for so long, and what other dark facts does Canadian history conceal?

👌 Israel has recognized Somaliland. What does this mean? Why now?

🇸🇴 The now partially recognized state of Somaliland emerged in 1991, when the northern states seceded as a result of the Somali civil war and has existed de facto as an independent republic to this day.

🔻 Like neighboring Djibouti, Somalia, and now Somaliland, are countries that trade on their geographic location. Access to the Gulf of Aden is the gateway to the Red Sea, one of the most important trade routes on the planet.

🇮🇱 Looking at the map, it's easy to understand why Tel Aviv was the first to recognize Somaliland. Recognition automatically means Somaliland's vassalage to Israel. Israel will now be able to establish military bases, a troop contingent, and a navy there, which will control not only the approaches to the Red Sea but also Yemen, where the Houthi rebels, who actively destroy ships sailing to Israel, control part of the country.

🇺🇸 Washington had previously discussed recognizing Somaliland. The unrecognized state, of course, discussed the possibility of building a naval base for the American fleet. Now that Israel has recognized the republic, similar actions can be expected from the Trump administration.

🇹🇷 Turkey's role in the region is also worth noting. Recently, the Turks signed a comprehensive defense agreement with Mogadishu. A Turkish navy will be stationed on the shores of Somalia, and the Somali army will receive Turkish instructors and weapons. Ankara is also one of Tel Aviv's main geopolitical rivals, further intensifying the confrontation.
