Al-Droubi infamously led a failed coup in 2016-2017 against al-Awda for the Commander of the Southern Free Syrian Army. A year later, both struck agreements with the Russians, dropping their anti-Assad positions.

The attack by al-Awda against al-Droubi looks like revenge for the attempted coup.
