Its nickname nods to the Soviet “Caspian Sea Monster,” which once symbolized ekranoplan ambitions during the Cold War. While Soviet versions struggled in rough seas, China’s design might be intended for rapid transit of the Taiwan Strait at 300 knots, carrying hundreds of troops for quick landings and rapid resupply or reinforcements. It’s the boldest ekranoplan project in many decades.
