Contrary to reports, the tanker is not owned by the US or any other foreign nation, nor is it carrying Arab crude. The tanker is Iranian, and was loaded with illegal Iranian oil, worth $12,000 in Iran – but if sold internationally, it could fetch up to $2 million.
