There’s an entire village in Nepal called the 'kidney village.' That’s because almost every household has a family member who’s sold a kidney here. Organ smugglers frequent Nepalese villages to convince their poor residents to sell their organs. Many are told their kidney will grow back like fruit after the surgery, or that sacrificing just one won’t affect them. Up to 10,000 kidneys are sold on the black market every year.
Shyam Kumar Budhathoki was one such Nepalese villager. He was promised $6,000, but paid much less, and now he can’t walk because a problem with his legs appeared after the surgery.

Let's take a moment and watch these honed moves. Abbas Alizada from Afghanistan looks just like Bruce Lee. He had always dreamed of becoming a world famous athlete, so when friends and relatives pointed out his resemblance to the martial arts star, Abbas began making himself even more like Bruce Lee. He cut his hair and began rigorous training sessions. Abbas watched Bruce Lee movies in slow motion over and over again in order to learn the actor’s famous moves and master the art of nunchucks.
The Bruce Lee lookalike is a social media sensation in Afghanistan. Abbas is invited to TV shows and sporting events, but not everyone in the traditionalist society is happy about Abbas impersonating "an infidel".

Life-saving rat is retiring!
Meet Magawa the rat. This humble-looking guy has helped Cambodians clear the land of mines. During his 5-year service, Magawa sniffed out 39 landmines and other 28 unexploded items on a territory the size of 20 football pitches. Magawa is the first rat to receive the animal equivalent of the George Cross. He has joined some brave dogs, horses, pigeons and a cat who also received the medal. "Magawa's performance has been unbeaten, and I have been proud to work side-by-side with him," Magawa’s handler said. Thank you for your service!
Magawa grew up in Apopo, a training centre for mine-detecting rodents in Tanzania. RT Documentary once visited the centre to see how these cute and brave creatures learn to save lives! Check out the story 🐭

The groom's family has to pay a hefty dowry for the bride. A young wife is expected to take care of most of the household chores. Unlike her husband, a Gypsy wife can't work or study. While other Gypsy traditions are fading away, child marriages live on. This is what a Gypsy wedding looks like.

Cast Away in Syria
Remember Tom Hanks' character in Cast Away, who found a companion in a Wilson volleyball? A similar story happened to a Syrian soldier named Rami. He lost all his friends during the war in Syria, but came across a football in a destroyed school. Rami has been carrying his own Wilson everywhere since then. It's a loyal companion that will never leave him. It's a moving story from our upcoming documentary. Stay tuned for the premiere, but here are some photographs from the shoot 📸

Agafia Lykova hasn’t been bothered by the pandemic in the slightest. That’s because she has been living deep in the Siberian taiga all by herself for quite some time!
Agafia was born 77 years ago to a family of Old Believers, members of an Orthodox Christian sect who fled religious persecution during Soviet times. When Agafia’s family was first discovered in 1978, they looked like peasants straight from the 18th century. That was the first time she had ever met outsiders.
All her family members are long gone, but Agafia has never left her hut in the forest. She reads the Bible, speaks old Slavonic and remains self-sufficient to this day. Nothing has changed for her, except for the journalists who come from time to time to film the Siberian hermit.

Areesha trains at Karachi’s first boxing club for girls and pulls no punches. In this patriarchal society, girls aren’t supposed to box! They are expected to prepare for married life, learn how to cook and raise children.
But when the club’s founder and trainer Younus had a daughter, he decided she should be able to defend herself. Judging by how Areesha and others are working on their jabs and hooks, Younus has nothing to fear.

Iraq’s Najaf cemetery is where you don’t want to be in the event of a Zombie apocalypse! More than 5 million people are buried at the Wadi al-Salaam, which means Peace Valley in Arabic. It covers some 10 square kilometres, equivalent to 900 football fields, and has a special significance for Shia Muslims. Imam Ali, the founder of Shia Islam, is buried there, so pious Shiites desire to be buried close to the imam.
The Najaf cemetery is also a testimony to various chapters of Iraqi history. It grew after the Iran-Iraq war, the Gulf War, the US invasion and the rise of Islamic State. This time, the Covid pandemic has swollen the cemetery further.

Siberian ice-skating babushka 👵🏻⛸
Lyubov Morekhodova, 79, became an internet sensation after a video of her ice skating on Lake Baikal went viral. She’s been skating since she was little. Her father made her first skates so she could take a short cut to school across the ice.
Lyubov was born on Lake Baikal and, after retiring, she returned to live on its shoreline. She likes the harsh environment here, and the hard work. Every day, she gets up early to chop wood, fetch water from an ice hole, feed her cows, and hit the ice. She still uses old-fashioned skates that attach to her felt boots. Lyubov says she likes them better than modern skates. But when she came to Moscow, she wasn't allowed to ice skate in them on Red Square! Maybe they just envied her mad skills.
