Bolivia’s child workers
#video #Bolivia

Nadia is a little girl from the suburbs of La Paz. She dreams of becoming a lawyer, but she hardly has time to do her homework. After classes, Nadia has to start her shift at a market. She helps her mum sell eggs and noodles.

In Bolivia, children as young as ten are allowed to work under the controversial Children’s Code. As a result, child vendors and child cleaners are a common sight. They’d love to study more to pursue their dream careers in medicine, academia or finance, but they must support their families now. Ten-year-olds can work for themselves or their families, those older than 12 can work for others.

Critics argued the law effectively legalised child labour. However, kids went out on the streets to protest their right to work when the government planned to raise the minimum working age to 14.

Check out this heartbreaking film featuring legal child workers, as well as underage miners who have to operate outside the law.

#video #Russia

Seeing the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights should be on anyone’s bucket list. The multicolour curtains of light have captivated people for thousands of years. Inuit, Norse, Finnish and Icelandic legends describe the most incredible origins of the dancing lights.

However, the most recent myth has driven tourism for an Aurora hunt in Russia’s Murmansk region. According to Chinese superstition, if you conceive under the Northern Lights, it will be a boy. Others believe the Northern Lights baby is in for a happy life. Local businesses endorse the myth and offer rooms with North-facing windows and a transparent roof.

Have you ever seen the Aurora Borealis?

What goes online stays online
#video

You leave digital 'breadcrumbs' every time you are online - birthdate, email, geotags, vacation photos, or a pet name. They might not mean much separately, but together they can reveal your digital portrait that scammers use.

While a lot of people shrug off, internet security experts warn against the careless approach. Scammers may not target specifically you, but your company or someone you know.

What is digital identity? How much does the internet know about us? How to not fall for a scam, and what human psychology has to do with it? If you don't know answers yet, make sure you check out our latest series, I am Hacked.

Russian dream
#video #Russia

British trader John Kopiski came to Russia in the 1990s on a business trip that changed his life. ‘After Perestroika, everybody was so hospitable. It was a new life; capitalism hadn’t arrived’. So John jumped at the opportunity to move to Russia at the age of 42 because he felt at home.

John eventually met a Russian woman, converted to Orthodoxy and fathered five children. Together they run a massive farm with more than 4,000 cows in the Vladimir region. They produce 50 tonnes of milk every day, and John has taken up cheese production following EU sanctions against Russia.

‘As an Englishman, I have no loyalty there. I have lots of anger and disappointment,’ John says. Nevertheless, he takes pride in his newfound motherland and says his relatives in the UK don’t get his love for Russia.

Check out John’s extraordinary story in the full documentary here.

Slaves of Bangladesh brickyards
#video #Bangladesh

Slavery exists in 2021. Workers of Bangladeshi brick factories are living proof. Men, women, and children mix the clay with water, fill wooden forms, and make bricks. Take this brickyard and compare it to one from the 19th century - there will be no difference.

Brickyard workers complain about low wages and non-existent regulations. As a result, they breathe in the red dust that causes lung diseases and risk accidents. If someone dies, 'no one cares', they say, and the owners beat them and treat them 'as dogs'.

Bricks are in high demand in Bangladesh, with a 160 million population rapidly moving to the cities. People need to live somewhere and need cheap building materials. Brick-making is seasonal, so workers toil away before the rains start. Then they go back to their homes that aren't even made of bricks.

The City of Women
#video #Columbia

On the outskirts of Cartagena, Colombia, there is a unique place called the ‘City of Women’. It’s a close-knit community of some hundred homes built entirely by women for women.

They were forced to flee their homes by the brutal conflict between guerrillas, paramilitaries and government forces. Over the decades, more than seven million people have been internally displaced, half of them - women.

Throughout the conflict, women have gone through sexual violence, slavery, and exploitation. Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Hear the story of Maritza and other Colombian women who had to start over in the City of Women.

Smiling icebreaker
#photo #Russia

The Yamal icebreaker had its trademark smile whitened during a repair. The Yamal’s smile first appeared in 1994, when the icebreaker performed humanitarian children’s cruises. But, over the years, the smile has worn out.

The ship powered by two nuclear reactors is one of the world’s most powerful icebreakers. When fully loaded with 500 kg of nuclear material, she can operate for up to five years without a refuel. The Yamal cuts through 6-metre thick ice like a knife through butter. It’s truly enormous, more than 147 metres long and 30 metres wide!

The ‘Yamal’ is named after the Yamal Peninsula in Russia, and it translates as ‘end of the earth’. And the ship can only traverse the cold waters, so its reactors don’t overheat.

You can find out more about the life and work of icebreakers in our documentary here.

The right to die
#video #Peru

Ana Estrada is confined to bed most of the time and can breathe only with a respirator. She lives with polymyositis, a rare muscle disease with no cure. Since 2016, Ana has been writing a blog called ‘Ana seeks a dignified death’. In addition, she started a legal battle to decide to end her life ‘when the time comes’. Assisted death is illegal in her country of Peru.

Peru is primarily a Catholic country, where euthanasia is prohibited alongside same-sex marriage and abortion. However, in 2021 a court ruled in favour of Ana and cleared anyone assisting in her death of criminal charges. Ana says she would decide to die when she could no longer write her blog.

On this day in 2000, the Dutch lower house of parliament voted to legalise euthanasia. Thus, the Netherlands became the first country that allowed mercy killings. Euthanasia is also legal in Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Canada and Colombia.

Our lives are more wired than ever. At the touch of a button, you can get anything you want in almost any part of the world. But our increasingly digitalised lifestyle comes at a price. Peace Fighters
#video #Israel

Rami Elhanan is an Israeli army veteran who fought in three wars. First, he lost friends in the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Then he lost his only daughter in a suicide bombing by Palestinian terrorists in 1997. After that, anger and the urge for revenge led to dialogue about reconciliation to stop the violence and retaliation on both sides.

Rami has since dedicated himself to advocating peace between Israelis and Arabs. He’s convinced it’s the only way to secure lasting peace in the region.

On November 29, 1947, the UN voted to split Palestine into Jewish and Arab states, leading to the creation of Israel in 1948. Since then, Israel has fought eight wars with Arab neighbours and witnessed almost daily tension with Palestinians.

There have been 11 attempts at peace, but they haven’t solved one of the world’s longest-running conflicts so far. You can watch the inspiring testimony of Rami and other Israeli activists in our documentary here.

#video #Bangladesh

Myanmar’s ousted leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been sentenced to four years in prison for inciting unrest and violating COVID restrictions. Suu Kyi faces 11 charges that could see her imprisoned for life. The politician was once seen as a beacon for human rights. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her struggle against military rule. However, Suu Kyi’s image suffered badly following the Rohingya crisis.

In 2017, nearly a million Muslim Rohingya fled to neighbouring Bangladesh, running from an army crackdown. The government denied the violence took place and claimed the troops only targeted insurgents, not civilians. But numerous accounts of Rohingya refugees tell a different story of slaughter and persecution.

Hear one of the stories from our documentary, Rohingya Unpeopled, and don’t forget to check out the whole film.

Philippines Klondike
#video #Philippines

Pinut-an barangay is known as the Philippines’ underwater Klondike. For years, international corporations have been attempting to start mining operations here, but were driven away by unsteady weather conditions and low profit margins. Ultimately, the area was taken over by the gold divers.

They search for gold nuggets on the seabed — a rather dangerous occupation that can cause injury or death. Besides, place mining is illegal, and divers
form syndicates to work around the law. The truth is, residents have no choice — this is the only job they can have to provide sustenance for themselves and their families. Their only hope is that their children will get an education and do better.

Julian Assange can be extradited to the US
#photo #UK

A UK court has ruled in favour of the US appeal to extradite Julian Assange. The WikiLeaks founder is wanted on 18 charges relating to the WikiLeaks release of classified documents on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If convicted, he faces a maximum 175-year sentence. In January, a district court refused the US extradition request due to concerns over his mental health.

Assange’s fiancee, Stella Moris, called the decision ‘a grave miscarriage of justice’.
Find out more about Assange and why he is wanted in the US in our documentary.
