The coldest place on Earth
#video #Russia

What does it feel like to live in the coldest place on Earth? RT’s Konstantin Rozhkov decided to test it for himself and journeyed to Oymyakon, where temperatures can drop to minus 50 degrees Celsius or minus 58 Fahrenheit.

When it’s that cold, things don't work like we are used to. But people who have lived here all their lives have no problem with it. They go ice-swimming when it's minus 50 degrees Celsius, and they come up with intelligent ways to keep their gadgets and cars up and running in these extreme temperatures, and their kids have fun on playgrounds. Also, there is no need to refrigerate food since they live in a giant freezer. This is why people eat raw meat and fish because all infections die out at such temperatures.

It was the largest human-made object in space and the first crewed modular station, paving the way for the International Space Station. Mir lasted for 15 years, three times its expected lifetime. It hosted scores of international astronauts and thousands of scientific experiments. It crashed into the Pacific in 2001, but its legacy lives on.

#video #Arctic

On the 80th parallel north, there’s not much life. It’s a vast icy desert with the occasional polar bear in the distance. Nevertheless, Russian researchers have been travelling nearly to the top of the world since 1937 to collect data from the Arctic region.

They used to land on an old thick ice floe to live and work on it for almost a year. Then, they slowly drifted across the Arctic ocean. But warmer temperatures mean the ice cover is melting rapidly. So expeditions had to be evacuated after the ice gave way under their drifting stations.

They’ve come up with the ‘ship and ice’ polar station when researchers work on the ice but can retreat to the safety of a vessel. We joined an expedition aboard the Akademik Tryoshnikov.

In 2014, Donbass residents refused to recognise the results of “Maidan”, which sparked a severe reaction from the Ukrainian authorities. Donetsk Airport became a base for the Ukrainian military in the conflict because of its location. They succeeded in taking it over and used the control tower as the base for shelling the militia and peaceful citizens. One of the main objectives was retaking the airport control tower.

The film features burnt homes, people seeking for shelter, and victims of shelling from the airport. The film crew also met militia members, former miners, teachers, and plumbers, who had taken up arms to defend their home.
