The Afghan Woman King
#video #Afghanistan

Back then, I had a Kalashnikov, a rifle and shotgun, but a handgun is more convenient. First of all, it's easy to conceal. You can use it in a car, aim it in either direction.

These are not the words of a seasoned soldier. This is Bibi Hokmeena, an Afghan woman, talking about her time as a jihad warrior in the 1980s. Hokmeena is truly an amazing woman full of contradictions. She is a devout Muslim, but has been wearing men’s clothes her entire life. She fights for women’s rights, but she would never condone western values and call herself a feminist. Hokmeena’s never been in love, but is revered by men and women who call her ‘Woman King’.

Lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely
#video #Japan

Ito is ‘hikikomori’. This is what the Japanese call people who don’t want to face the outside world. These modern hermits spend weeks and even months in isolation, hiding in their bedrooms. They almost never go out, don’t work or study, and rarely interact with others. Hikikomori are mostly young men who hide away from the pressure and expectations of their families and society. A while back, we filmed Ito for four days, during which he never left his room.

Don't we all feel like hikikomori sometimes?

‘He would kill in the blink of an eye. I felt that perfectly'

Our filmmaker Lidia Vasilevskaya was held at gunpoint by drug lord Pablo Escobar's hitman. He demonstrated how he used to kill people. 'When we asked Popeye to explain how he killed, and he pointed his gun at me, it was incredibly scary. I knew the gun was fake, and he wouldn't fire it, but I was still paralysed by fear. He had this scary, piercing and empty look. He would kill in the blink of an eye. I felt that perfectly,' Lidia recalls.

Jhon Jairo Velásquez Vásquez, known as Popeye, confessed to killing some 300 people and being involved in the murder of 3,000 more. He spent 24 years in prison and shot to internet fame after his release in 2014. He had a popular YouTube channel and featured in our documentary, Escobar's Hitman.

Check it out to see if it was worth Lidia risking her life. If you'd like to know more about how we work at RT Documentary, watch this clip with 10 curious facts about us.

World's most explosive city
#video #Mexico

The city of Tultepec in Mexico is almost literally sitting on a powder keg: three quarters of Tultepec's population work in the fireworks business, and sometimes their pyrotechnics activities cause deadly accidents. However, locals shrug their shoulders and say that it’s the lot of a fireworks maker.

They throw an extravagantly wild, week-long fireworks festival every year. Its highlight is the ‘pamplonada’, or a parade of colourful bull effigies rigged with fireworks. Participants prepare everything themselves - they build bull-shaped floats, paint them and load them with hand-made fireworks. Then they set them on fire to watch sparks fly in every direction as they celebrate the passion and peril of their craft.

‘Our cameraman started calling home and say goodbye in case we got shot’
#photo #Africa

"Two days after we finally got to Western Sahara, locals received intel a terrorist group was planning to kidnap us," says RT Documentary's own Marina Kosareva. The incident happened on a trip to Western Sahara where they filmed female deminers. "We were in the middle of nowhere with nothing around except for a UN base a few kilometres away. I remember the guards counting bullets and the cameraman calling his relatives just in case it all went south. In the end, a decision was made to get us out of there at the crack of dawn with enforced security. It was a nerve-wracking five-hour drive in the deserts of Western Sahara and Mauritania, but it ended well."

Slumdog Ballet Dancer
#video #Brazil

Luiz grew up in Complexo do Alemao, one of Brazil's largest slums. Boys there are expected to enjoy 'boyish' things, like playing football. But Luiz dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer. Although he had doubts because of the colour of his skin and what his family would say, his passion found him.

Luiz entered a ballet school for deprived children run by the iconic Bolshoi Ballet from Russia. Children from all over South America compete for a place to learn classical dance in the best traditions of Russian ballet. We can't wait to see Luiz on the stage of the Bolshoi! 🩰

When loving is a crime 💔
#photo #India

Never was there a story of more woe than that of Juliet and her Romeo. Well, here's a sad tale worth a Shakespearean tragedy. These lovebirds we photographed a while ago had to hide from their relatives out of fear of being killed.

Apparently, it's still a thing to divide people in higher and lower castes in some parts of India and punish those who dare to love outside their group. Sometimes angry relatives beat or forcibly separate star-crossed lovers, or ends up in honour killings. It's not illegal to marry outside castes in India, but some families see inter-caste marriage as a blow to reputation.

❗️Olympics: Hubbard confirmed as first transgender to compete at Games!

New Zealand has selected weightlifter Laurel Hubbard to compete in the super-heavyweight category in Tokyo - meaning she will become the first transgender athlete at the Games due to updated selection requirements. The 43-year-old will also be the oldest lifter at the 2021 Olympics.

She transitioned 10 years ago, having never competed at men's international weightlifting competitions. A number of scientists have said the new guidelines do little to mitigate the biological advantages of male puberty, including bone and muscle density.

New Zealand's athletics body has stated it is all for 'inclusion'.

Is it a level playing field?

How our film crew escaped a polar bear attack
#video #Russia

When you're a filmmaker, you have to be ready for any situation, like encountering a wild polar bear! Our film crew came across one during the shooting of 'Freed to Be Wild' in Kamchatka. The polar bear didn't retreat, while our crew and bear warden Tatyana only had flares and their voices. However, Tatyana had told the crew what to do. "I had to remember Tatyana's lessons, so together with the entire film crew, we growled and waved tripods and sticks over our heads," director Natalya Karachkova recalls.

In the Kamchatka peninsula, polar bears are a common sight. The predators have become frequent visitors to villages along the coastline. They're attracted by delicious Pacific walruses, who now spend more time on the mainland and less on the sea-ice that is slowly disappearing. That's why locals know this life-saving skill very well.

Phew! The polar bear looks adorable, but only from a safe distance, right?

Tanzanian 'ghosts'
#video #Africa

Being an albino in Tanzania (and a few other African countries) is very dangerous. Not because it's sunny all the time and UV radiation is bad for people with this condition. But instead, albinos are hunted down and hacked for body parts by witch doctors.

These traditional healers stoke a superstition that people with albinism don't die and their bodies possess magical properties. They cut their limbs and drain their blood to use in potions and make amulets. The old beliefs are so strong that albinos often become outcasts in society. Many choose to live in special sanctuaries.

Here's a heartbreaking story of a girl named Kabula, who was traced and attacked by hitmen.
