Aleksandr, an employee of a medical institution in Mariupol, said ambulances and food trucks were loaded with shells by the Ukrainian military, and ‘children’ or ‘people’ were written on the vehicles. In addition, they confiscated personal vehicles from the city’s residents. ‘We arrived, instructed the driver, get out of the car’, the man recalls.

‘We’ve been hiding in the cellar this whole time. There’s an old lady with a walker there and one with crutches here’. In 2014, a woman hurriedly told an RT Documentary film crew she was only going for humanitarian aid. Then in the Donetsk region, there were battles for the city of Ilovaisk.

This episode is included in the film Donbass: Summer 2014. The battle for Ilovaisk was the first significant victory of the DPR militia over units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and volunteers. The Ukrainian military stormed the city but was completely surrounded.

A resident of Mariupol alleges the Azov* Battalion pulled people out of their houses and ushered them into basements. Tanks started firing from everywhere, and no one could lift their head out for four days. He says, ‘the Russians were not even close at the time. This is murder, murder of people. This was done by Azov*. He claims the Ukrainian military herded everyone into the basement.

In the destroyed Mariupol, civilians are left without food, water, or medicines. During the shelling, food was brought to them by the Angel humanitarian group led by Alexei Smirnov. They go to the most dangerous places, often narrowly avoiding death on mined roads. An RT Documentary crew filmed the Angels for several days, once coming under fire.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari says the armed gangs that kidnapped passengers on a train in Kaduna used them as human shields. The governor of Kaduna state suggests the attack could be the result of a partnership between Boko Haram and other Nigerian kidnap gangs. At the end of April, one of the abducted women gave birth in captivity. According to the Nigerian Railway Corporation, more than 150 people are still missing.

Armed gangs have been terrorising Nigeria for years. Boko Haram is one of the world’s deadliest terrorist groups. Some Nigerians can’t stand aside while kidnapping, rapes, and killings happen. For example, Aisha leads a vigilante group that helps government forces fight terrorists. She’s called the ‘queen’ of Boko Haram hunters.

Photos of children hiding in a basement in Kharkiv have turned out to be taken in Donetsk in 2014. Russian journalists found the place where the pictures were taken eight years ago. It’s a bomb shelter in the Chelyuskintsev mine where up to 200 people hid from Ukrainian shelling, most of them children. The pictures have been on the internet since then, as can be seen in the video.

On May 5 2015, a memorial was unveiled in Donetsk to commemorate the children killed by the Ukrainian shelling of Donbass. There are 66 names inscribed on the plaque; the youngest was only a year old. Since then, the list has multiplied. According to the UN, 152 children had died in Donbass by April 2021.

In the film Donbass: The Grey Zone, which we made in early 2022, a captured Ukrainian soldier is brought to the memorial. He is shown a list of killed children. We are posting this clip today. As well as an excerpt from the documentary Donbass: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.

The monument and the place next to it in Donetsk is called the Alley of Angels. The slab is littered with children’s toys. Above it, there is a wrought iron arch twined with metal roses. And a bell made of a large-calibre shell casing. Then, two years after the monument was erected, a sculpture appeared next to it - a boy covering his little sister and looking up into the sky.

In 2017 the country was in the middle of a war. More than ten years of war in Syria caused over 600,000 deaths. Thousands of children lost their parents. As a young boy, Leith saw his family gunned down. We filmed him with his grandmother five years after the trauma.
