Biden Urges Gas Station Owners to Lower Fuel Prices

‘The companies running gas stations – bring down the prices that you’re charging. Do it now, do it now.’ US President Joe Biden warns gas companies at a meeting of the White House Competition Council to lower the prices they are charging to consumers.

The anti-Russian sanctions, which the US imposed right at the beginning of the special military operation have ricocheted against the country itself. For almost 7 months gas prices have been on the rise and are almost unaffordable for many Americans. The cost for food has skyrocketed as well.

Watch our documentary where military analysts and experts explain why and how sanctions target those countries that impose them. Listen to the interviews and see the statistics in Sanctions: Boomerang Effect.

By the middle of the 20th century, there were only 20-30 Amur tigers left in the world. They almost disappeared due to poaching and deforestation. The endangered animals are listed in the Red Books of Russia and of the world.

Now the population of these striped cats is making a comeback. Today, there are about 750 of them in Russia. Specially protected natural areas have been created for them in the Far East.

In China, killing a tiger can bring five to ten years in prison and a hefty fine. The country has created a huge national park on the border with Russia. Only a few dozen animals live there, some of whom are just guests. They constantly cross the border to Russia and return.

Watch our video about the striped cats. For more details, see our documentary

Do you believe in shamans’ powers?

They claim to communicate with spirits, predict the weather, and cure illnesses. Once a year, shamans gather for collective prayers on Olkhon Island, the Siberian Republic of Buryatia. Ordinary people can also attend.

During the prayer service shamans feed the spirits and let them in. The strongest ones call on the patrons of the area. For example, the supreme shaman communicates with the spirit of the island.

Watch the film So, You Want to Be a Shaman to have a look at a spectacular blessing ceremony on Baikal.

Retired Lebanese Soldiers Demand Increase in Retirement Pay; Storm Parliament

Footage shows hundreds of retired military men clashing with police as they attempt to break into the Lebanese Parliament. The men are seeking an increase in their retirement pay amid rising costs of living. ‘The dollar has risen and the Lebanese pound is in bad condition, and we are still getting paid with the Lebanese pound, so how do we live?’ says one of the protesters.

In 2019, the country’s banks placed severe restrictions on people’s access to their savings. Last week, locals also stormed at least seven bank branches. The assailants demanded the release of their frozen savings.

Lebanon is currently experiencing a severe crisis with some three-quarters of the population living in poverty.

How did these massive sinkholes form right in the center of the city?

Some experts say the huge holes opened up in Villa Nueva, Guatemala because of torrential rains in the region. They caused landslides and flooding, resulting in the collapsed roadways.

Four people have been swallowed up by one of the holes. Two were immediately rescued, with two still missing. A mother and daughter disappeared when their vehicle was swallowed by the hole. Rescuers descended on ladders and with the aid of crane, they use metal detectors in hopes of finding the missing.

Sinkholes form in different places around the world. For example, in Yamal, there’re almost two dozen similar craters. Some people believe they are made by aliens or meteorites, others prefer the scientific version. And what do you think? Watch the film Black Holes of Yamal and share your opinion.

Girls in Mauritania are force-fed to be bigger. Why so?

The reason is due to the country’s unique beauty standards. Here, a female endowed with fuller curves is seen as a sign of health. The girls are being fattened from the age of four as putting on weight is a sure way to find good husbands. ‘The Mauritanian men prefer medium-sized women. If they see a thin woman they think she’s sick,’ explains Tvage Ahmed Salem, a local.

September 28 is Freedom from Hunger Day which is held annually to increase awareness about global hunger. While in some states people don’t have enough food to feed their families, Mauritanians honor leblouh, the tradition of force-feeding. Find out more in our documentary Fed to Wed.

‘I was fired [by Ukrainian management of Zaporozhye nuclear plant] for participating in the May 9 parade.’

Vlad Lavrik worked at the plant for 20 years. His case is not the only one. ‘About eight people were fired for participating in the May 9 parade,’ the man says.

The Ukrainian troops regularly shell not only the station, but also Energodar city. Vlad does not understand how the Ukrainian military dare to bomb the nuclear power plant. If it’s hit, it can lead to disaster. ‘If they keep directly hitting the unit and damage the reactor, then the worst can happen,’ Vlad says.

Vlad told his story to our film crew, who worked in Donbass on a new film. Follow the posts, don’t miss the premiere.

🌪Shocking footage of Hurricane Ian in Florida

Videos from the aftermath of Hurricane Ian show Florida’s streets turned into rivers. The storm has left behind terrible destruction in southwest Florida: highways became impassable, while property and buildings sustained severe flooding. So powerful were the winds that trees and road signs were ripped out of the ground. The eyewitnesses warned of sharks in the cities.

Ian is recognized as one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever hit the US. It gained top winds of 155 mph (250 kph), just shy of the most dangerous Category 5 status. More than 2 million Florida homes and businesses were left without electricity. While no deaths have been blamed on the storm, a boat carrying Cuban migrants sank in stormy weather. Three survivors were rescued, while the search for 20 others is in progress.

As the hurricane neared Florida, millions of residents were urged to evacuate. The storm previously tore into Cuba, killing two people and bringing down the country’s electrical grid.
