One and a half million children in Somalia are starving.

At the same time, the country is experiencing the worst drought in 40 years. Water sources have dried up, crops have died, there is no food. Children die from malnutrition. The forecasts are disappointing: there will be no rain in the coming months. Food is also running out in the refugee camps. People go there hoping to get help. These photos were taken in one of the camps.

According to UN data, the country is getting billions of dollars in aid. At the same time, it is simply impossible to bring humanitarian aid to a number of areas of Somalia. The areas are ruled over by terrorists, and they don’t let anyone in.

The UN estimates that many countries will face hunger in 2022 due to climate change. Among them are the poorest countries on the planet: Afghanistan, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Yemen. However, the climate is becoming different not only there. For example, in rich Norway, Arctic glaciers are melting due to high temperatures.

See the Heat episode of No Way Back series to learn how the weather can drastically change people’s lives.

‘It was interesting to see how I’d react to what I hate most – the cold.’

Freediving champion Andrey Matveenko typically dives into the warm seas, but once decided to challenge himself by taking a plunge into icy waters.

Freediving is a challenge in itself: diving into the pitch-black abyss on a single breath, enduring intense pressure, staying in control. But some go even further by diving into icy waters. To illustrate the difference between freediving in warm and cold seas, the record regular freediving depth is an extraordinary 130 metres, but under the ice, it’s just 75. This year, Andrey will not participate in the World Championship as the Russian sportsmen were disqualified.

Watch Freeze Divers - an inspiring story of human endurance and see the breathtaking footage of sportsmen diving deep in subzero water. How do you feel stepping out of your comfort zone?

Bearing a Lode ‘Gold miners, leave our land! They get rich at the expense of our resources, and what do we get? Nothing! All they leave is polluted water!’ Pedro Fernandez, resident of El Canto, Mexico, is seriously concerned about his homeland. He says…
Mexico: indigenous tribe is on the brink of extinction

Meet the Yaqui indigenous people of Mexico, who have a long and rich past. There are 40,000 of them and their survival is under threat. But why so?

The threats are due to their land. Recently, drug cartels noticed the Yaqui territory is a lucrative path to smuggle drugs to the U.S. But the cartel believes the Yaquis stand in the way of their business prospering. There already was a conflict in which the drug dealers killed several locals.

Another problem the Yaquis face is the drying Yaqui river. Though the tribe is the legal owner of half the water in the river basin, much of it is redirected to feed agricultural industries. ‘It’s an injustice, it’s a great sadness to see our river without water,’ said César Cota, a local farmer. ‘That is where animals live, our medical plants, our reeds live.’

With little water, widespread poverty and no farm work available, younger Yaquis have begun to migrate to nearby cities and don’t return. All these problems have brought the Yaqui culture to the brink of extinction.

By the way, in Puebla, another Mexican area, people also suffer from uninvited guests. Here, gold miners, according to locals, leave behind polluted water, spoiled soil and dead animals. Our documentary Bearing a Load discusses this issue, watch it here.

Soccer match turns into world’s worst crowd disaster

Shocking footage has surfaced in Indonesia of football fans suffering death and injury during a stampede on Saturday. Families and friends mourn the victims as their bodies were returned home. 320 people were injured and 125 died, with 17 children among the fatalities.

The incident occurred after a match in which Arema was defeated by their rivals Persebaya Surabaya at the Kanjuruhan stadium. Supporters from the losing side stormed the pitch. In an attempt to stop the violence, police fired tear gas, which triggered a disastrous crush of fans. 34 died at the stadium, including two officers. The uncontrolled crowd then ran to the exit; many were trampled and suffocated.

‘I felt hot and stinging in my eyes, I couldn’t see clearly while my head was dizzy and everything went dark ... I passed out,’
said Rizky, one of the eyewitnesses. Awaken, he was already in the emergency room. His cousin died because of head injuries.

Though it’s utterly dangerous, some people consider it an honour to fight for the sake of their favourite club. For instance, in Germany, Sweden and Greece, football firms organize these fights deliberately. Discover more on hooligans in Football Beasts.

RT Has Some Good Points - Elon Musk

The SpaceX and Tesla tycoon wrote in March that RT and other Russian news sources were “entertaining” and made “some good points,” according to court documents.

Musk refused to block these sites’ IP addresses from his Starlink internet service, despite pressure from “some governments.”

In a text message conversation with investor Antonio Gracias dated March 5, Musk revealed that he had “been told” to block the IP addresses of RT and “several other Russian news sources” from being accessed via his Starlink satellite internet service.

“Actually I find their news quite entertaining,” Musk confided in Gracias.

Instead of turning on the heat, they give blankets to Czech schoolkids

A video showing schoolchildren warming themselves up with blankets has gone viral. Although just the beginning of October, it is already noticeably cold in some regions of the Czech Republic as people survive the best they can amid an energy crisis. The situation has provoked net users to accuse the Czech government of making bad decisions. ‘They [the kids] are victims of the policies of their elders,’ one user wrote. And many are worried that come winter things will be even worse.

Anti-Russian sanctions continue to hurt Europe. It has become obvious that those countries that had hoped to weaken and destabilize the Russian economy have actually done more harm to their own people. Thousands in Europe are coming out to protest the high cost of food, fuel and energy. Still, the governments seem not to hear the pleas of their people.

Why do European actions targeting Russia work against them? Watch Sanctions: Boomerang Effect to find out.
