Leningrad Siege Reflections
On this day, 81 years ago, the Siege of Leningrad started. The military blockade is considered one of the most horrific ordeals of World War II. During the siege Leningrad was relentlessly bombed. In total, the Nazis dropped more than 100 thousand bombs.
A million people died in Leningrad in 1941-1944. Hundreds of thousands starved to death. The Nazis took the city under siege, and it was impossible to enter or leave. There was also a shortage of food, and it was only possible to get bread on ration cards. Children and the elderly were given just 125 grams a day - that is a thin slice. People literally ate dirt from hunger.

Dmitry Buchkin survived the siege of Leningrad (1941 - 1944). He was a teen at the time. Together with other residents of Leningrad, Dmitry lived through 872 days of horror - that’s how long the siege lasted. He climbed onto the roofs to put out the fires.

Booby-trapped toys, land mines. As they retreated, the Ukrainian troops planted explosives to kill as many children as possible.
‘The victims suffered injuries to their wrists, face and neck the most often,’ says Alexandr Torba, a distinguished doctor of the LPR. In the more tragic cases, parents were forced to bury their babies in the yards because they were prevented from reaching the cemetery due to the shelling.
The children of Donbass did not have a normal childhood. They can tell which shell is flying by listening to the sound, and know where the bomb shelters are and what it means to go to school under shelling.

North Korea has passed a law granting itself the preemptive use of its nuclear weapons. The new law ensures that a nuclear strike would be carried out ‘automatically’ under a variety of scenarios, such as the country or its leadership being threatened.
The law specifically grants leader Kim Jong-un ‘all decisive powers’ over the use of nuclear weapons. ‘There is absolutely no such thing as giving up nuclear weapons first, and there is no denuclearization and no negotiation,’ said Kim, in a speech to the Supreme People’s Assembly. The country’s nuclear forces will be maintained in a state of readiness.

Afghani parents have to send their kids to illegal mines because of the economic crisis in the country. It’s known that as many as 70,000 children in Badakhshan, a province of Afghanistan, have already given up their studies for work.
‘I could not continue my education because of poverty and hardship, so I came here to work,’ explains an Afghani boy, working in a pit in Badakhshan.
Mining gold is hard and dangerous for men, not to mention school-age kids. The workers are lowered into a shaft about 70 meters down. A tunnel can collapse at any time, burying the workers alive. There have already been deaths here. Watch our clip to see how children risk their lives to survive.

Café Sheroes
‘If a man proposes to a girl, and she refuses, he’ll take revenge by throwing acid at her.’ Ritu Saini is an acid attack victim. Almost her entire face and part of her chest was severely burnt.
Though the penalty for committing such crime is at least ten years in prison, it’s extremely common in India. Ritu explains it’s because of the local men’s mentality: ‘If you won’t be mine, you won’t be anyone’s’.
Following the attack, her life couldn’t be same as before, but Ritu doesn’t hide at home or give up. The girl lives a full life and works in the local Café Sheroes, a unique place that is run by acid attack survivors who managed to rebuild their lives. By supporting and working with each other, the Indian girls learn to appreciate their inner beauty, rather than mourning the loss of their physical appearance.

The Orphan Bear Rescue Center in Russia is unique. Volunteers rescue little cubs and release them into the wild in a way that lets cubs stay wild, even if raised by people. Ecologist Valentin Pazhitnov created the method and helped start the rescue center.
‘The main thing about our method is to preserve their fear of humans and everything to do with them. Everything else is less important,’ explained the ecologist.

Kenyan woman loses leg and home due to climate change
Due to heavy rainfall, Lake Baringo, close to Keben’s home, has increased in size. This has caused a large number of crocodiles to appear. The photo shows them swimming near the shore. One day Kenabi could not escape and one of them attacked her. ‘No sooner had I bent down to wash my right leg, then I saw a crocodile pop up from the water,’ she said. ‘I screamed so loudly but unfortunately, I fell into the lake’ the woman recalled. Keben survived only by miracle, but her leg was so badly injured that doctors eventually had to amputate it.
The woman has a husband and six children. The lake also flooded their house, so the family had to move. With only one leg, Kenabi can no longer farm. Her husband earns little by digging pit latrines and working on local farms to feed their growing family.

On September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda carried out one of the worst terrorist attacks in history in the United States. It was broadcast live by the world’s major television stations. These shocking photos show people in Somalia suffering from famine. Millions in the Horn of Africa region are starving because of the drought and thousands have died. For the first time in over half a century, there have been four straight failed rainy seasons. Meteorologists expect the next two rainy seasons to be excessively dry as well.
Apart from the drought, a lack of grain supply has also contributed to the catastrophic situation of the African region. The West and Europe blame Russia for the situation, but that is simply not true. Russia has promised not to obstruct the Grain Deal*, and has fulfilled its obligations. But even so, the last departure of ships carrying grain from Ukraine to Africa was not successful. Only 1 of 34 ships reached the shores of Africa, while the others went to Europe.
Experts are predicting a famine in Somalia between October and December if the country does not receive aid. The UN humanitarian chief reckons about $1 billion is needed to avert a disaster in the country.
*In July, a Grain Deal was agreed in Turkey in which Russia pledged not to prevent the export of grain from Ukraine.
