China on a Plate

Pork stomachs, beef intestines, chicken paws with claws, fried larvae. Sounds disgusting, doesn't it? Well, not for the Chinese. It's a real delicacy for them.

In our film China on a Plate, travelers taste local cuisine. Sometimes they don't even understand what kind of food is on the plate. For example, a dessert with a surprise: the smell is such that the eyes water. The cake is made with durian.

But Chinese food is popular all over the world. For example, less exotic dishes, such as fried rice mixed with meat, seafood or vegetables. This is not just an ingredient of your favorite dishes. For half of the inhabitants of the planet, this cereal is practically the only food. By the way, in 2004, the UN declared September 20 as Rice Day. On this day, we're posting the film China on a Plate (2019) about the cuisine of the country where the most rice is grown in the world.

Carpet of plastic waste covers beaches in Honduras

The footage shows tons of plastic debris that has covered the Bay of Omoa coast, situated 200 kilometers north of the capital.

'This contamination is massive because every time the Motagua River fills up, the waste is unstoppable. If the Motagua fills up in the month the waste comes down, nobody can stop it,' a local said.

The plastic debris floats down the Motagua River from neighbouring Guatemala, causing tension between the two countries.

Forest Under Attack

Many of you voted for posting our film Forest Under Attack. So, we did!

The RT Documentary film explores the problems that humanity will face if the destruction of forests does not stop. Contraband forest exports, wildfires for slash-and-burn agriculture, burning grass and wood chips, illegal logging — these are a few activities that threaten the well-being of the forest. 'It's just a habit to treat the forest like a log deposit.' This is how experts describe the reason for the barbaric attitude to forests.

You will see footage of what remains after forest fires, the cause of which is often a person. You will also visit the North Ossetian Nature Reserve with film crew, where an ancient animal, the bison, is disappearing along with the forest.

Do you care about the forest?

Seal Empire Under Threat

Seals and sea lions on Sakhalin are dying because of plastic waste. Volunteers come to help the animals. They catch the seals with large nets, use sleeping pills and rescue the animals from the deadly plastic traps.

To reduce the number of seals and sea lions falling into the dangerous trap, volunteers collect garbage on the coast. 'The most typical risk and the most common type of the garbage is this kind of plastic tape,' says Anna Goleva, volunteer of a public organization rescuing marine animals.

The RT Documentary film crew visited Sakhalin and filmed the documentary Seal Empire Under Threat about volunteers saving seals.

This footage shows the dramatic aftermath of a deadly flood that hit the northern Nigerian state of Jigawa. As a result, more than 90 people were killed, more than 200 houses destroyed and at least 140,000 hectares of land in the region laid to waste.

'This kind of flood has never happened in the last thirty-eight years since I moved to this area, but this week I lost my house, my daughter and all my rams, it's a big loss for me,' says Adamu Maragwado, a local farmer.

According to a representative of the National Emergency Management Agency, since the beginning of 2022, the African country has suffered from severe floods that have resulted in the death of at least 300 people.

President of Colombia calls for legalizing cocaine

Colombia’s recently elected president Gustavo Petro has told the UN General Assembly to legalize the use of cocaine. He claimed that bloody campaigns against the production of the crop have failed and are only hurting his South American country. He added that 'demonized' farmers resort to growing coca 'because they have nothing else to grow.'

Despite the ban, thousands of farmers in Colombia have plantations. Many are forced to grow the crop and cooperate with drug traffickers to feed their families. The government promises them financial support if they switch to other crops instead. But not everyone agrees, and prefers to keep working for the narco-gangs.

To understand how Colombian farmers work for drug cartels watch our video and film The Coca Trap.

Zabbaleen: Trash Town

Zabbaleen is a city of professional scavengers, and it's possible to find the place with your eyes closed, such is the smell. Mostly Coptic Christians (a Christian minority in Egypt) live here. In the early morning they collect used glass, plastic, paper in Cairo and bring it home for sorting. Each ton of the capital's garbage creates 12 jobs in Zabbaleen.

The film Zabbaleen: Trash Town shows the life of a landfill city where ten-year-old children are already going to work, and the average life expectancy does not exceed 55 years.

[WARNING] Almost 200 beached whales in Australia have died

Two hundred whales have died after being stranded on a beach in Tasmania, Australia. Previously, local authorities of the island state reported the discovery of at least 230 whales on the shore, half of them were without signs of life. Only 35 are still alive. Rescuers continue to fight for their lives. Marine biologists said they were hunting for new food sources due to changing water conditions.

Two years ago a similar case occurred in the same place amid the largest mass-stranding in Australia’s history. About 470 long-finned pilot whales were found stuck on sandbars. After a week-long effort, only 111 of those whales were rescued.

While some people work to save whales, others continue to kill them. On the Faroe Islands, for example, locals honor a 1,200 year old annual national tradition called Grindadrap that sees whales herded into shallow bays to be butchered. Why are locals still doing this? Find the answer in the documentary film Red Waters.

Nothing strange here, just a teacher at a Canadian school.

Made up in such a way, trans teacher of technology Kayla Lemieux conducts classes at Oakville Trafalgar High School in Ontario, Canada. He clearly doesn't mind the impact his dress - complete with huge prosthetic breasts and tight-fitting clothes - will have on children.

The footage triggered a harsh reaction among Internet users. 'This man must be removed from the classroom and steps must be taken to prevent this from ever happening again', wrote one Twitter user. 'As the Ontario Minister of Education, it is your duty to protect Ontario students from being exposed to this teacher’s vulgar sexual fetish', remarked another.

The parents were also understandably worried. But the school administration hastened to reassure them, saying that there is nothing wrong with such behaviour, and to argue otherwise would be discrimination.

It seems that LGBT propaganda is gaining new momentum. Is it acceptable to teach children this way?

Volunteers on Sakhalin rescue seals and sea lions from plastic prisons. The animals get trapped into nets, fishing line, and packing tape and this causes them to choke. Incapable of escaping these traps without human help, the animals die.

'Their necks catch in the net and they’re trapped! They get even more tangled, suffocated and can’t hunt. The net strangles them,' says Andrey Vitulin, head of a public environmental club.

Watch the video to learn how seals are rescued and tune in to see our new film Seal Empire Under Threat.

All this trash is from the Nile. There is so much of it there that local ecologists have built a giant pyramid out of 250,000 thousand plastic bottles. The structure weighs 7.5 tons.

Microplastic particles have already been found in 70% of fish from the Nile. Meanwhile, the catch of local fishermen is decreasing every day, thus causing their incomes to fall.

Garbage in Egypt is one of the main problems. In Cairo, there is even a whole block of hereditary scavengers — Zabbaleen. Many people suffer from hepatitis from their work, but for locals it is the only source of income. Therefore, even small children go to collect rubbish. Find out more in our film Zabbaleen: Trash Town (2016).

Argentinian DNA: The Fracture

'These people were kept at military and police facilities. Many were tortured and murdered in cold blood. They were burnt or thrown out of planes alive.' The team of anthropologist Luis Fondebrider finds the remains of the missing in 1976-1983.

During this period, Argentina was under the rule of a military dictatorship. It's still spoken of as one of the most tragic periods in the history of the country. According to various estimates, from 9,000 to 30,000 went missing during this period. The children of the detained oppositionists were taken away and given to other people.

For many years, hundreds of mothers and grandmothers have been coming to the central square of Buenos Aires once a week with photos of stolen children. They hope someday they will return home. This is one of the episodes of our series Argentinian DNA (2019). We post it on the Day of the Political Rights of Argentine Women.
