ِAllaah, the Most High said, "And He showered you with His favours, both outward and inward." (31:20)
Imaam al-Baghawi said:
(Outward and inward), Ikrimah related from Ibn Abbas, "The outward favour is Islam and the Quran. The inward is whatever Allah has concealed of your sins and has not hastened punishment (for them)." Al-Dahhaak said, "Outward (means) your good form, with good proportionality in all your limbs and inward means knowledge." Muqaatil said, "Outward (means) a balanced form in creation, sustenance and Islaam. And inward means what Allaah has covered of (your) sins. Al-Rabee' said, "Outward means (favours) by way of the limbs and inward means (favours) by way of the heart." It has also been said that "outward" means affirmation of the tongue and "inward" means belief with the heart. And it has been said, "outward" means complete sustenance and "inward" means good manners. And Ataa' said, "Outward means lightening the legislated duties and inward means intercession."
Quote sent by Dawud Habashi, translated by Abu Iyaad.
