Current or former DS’: How can you tell when someone is proper service?

I read a lot of funny and interesting stories about prior service going through basic. Is there paperwork that says they were? Do they just jump up like they’re hot shit and try to brag about their National Defense Ribbon! Or is there a tell tale sign?

I’ll be rejoining coming from Navy as an E4 but read some funny stories and was just curious on either anyone recently doing this or cool stories in general!

SFPC

Been off socials for a while so I missed a few posts chronicling this adventure for anyone who cares to read or has any questions or advice along the way, but airborne school was completed and I’ve been in 18x hold here at SWCS since early November. Training here is excellent but the mandatory training is certainly not sufficient enough to sustain progression during your time here. Also from a mental perspective, I found that there is an abundant amount of free time here after your mandatory training and tasks are completed and for anyone serious about this path, I feel that not filling some of that time at least 3 days out of the week, making 2-a-days a part of your routine, is also necessary just to not be overcome with guilt about missing out on opportunities to be a little better. You quickly can see who is who while you’re here. My advice is to get on a routine with those who see this the same way. The forge is great and the head strength and conditioning coach is truly a great energy and a wealth of knowledge and experience. You will meet a lot of green berets and selected individuals that will give advice and even demystify some of SFAS and the selection process.

Anyway. My rucking was a point of concern when I arrived here, seeing as it was the event I held the least amount of experience in, but, after my time here in hold (at the cost of a slight decrease in calisthenics, which I’m salty about but I could afford technically), I am above average. All of my gate events measured are currently above average, actually. I hope that SFPC will only nudge those scores a tad higher in the same direction.

Anyway, I’ll be headed to SFPC tomorrow morning! I’m excited to finally start making some visual representation of progress. Thanks to everyone who gave me some advice or feedback along the way and Dr Tim Walton for his time he put into his books (I’m sorry I didn’t make it to the muster). If anyone has any advice or tips for what’s to come, or questions regarding airborne, 18x hold, or SFPC, I would love to help with whatever I can when I’m back for ten days before the big interview. I’ll be on my phone until this evening and then going dark again. Thanks again everyone.

What if I skip receiving a NCOER for 1 year?

Howdy,

PCSed to new duty station, had MQs and HQs up to that point, all super positive stuff. Immediately got in trouble at new duty station and was flagged/barred/fired for 6 months.

6 months is over, did my time, now requested through SGM to move battalions for a fresh start and get back at it after being shit on since I arrived at this unit.

Have yet to receive any NCOER stuff/change or rater even though it's been about a year/just a little over a year since my last one and haven't brought it up since I've basically been in trouble/fullfilling a rifleman position since I got here. While I did the job well and didn't get in further trouble, it's still in a punishment phase.

When I laterally move to this new battalion they will most likely need to do a change of rater or something along those lines. What is in my best interest here for my approach?

Thanks

I'll have some cereal and buttered toast

PCS after rotation/deployment.

Out of curiosity,

Can one submit a PCS request after coming back from a rotation or deployment?

Always wondered but never got a solid answer.

Daily hygiene during BCT

Hey, I’m considering joining the Army and have a few questions about day-to-day hygiene during BCT. I’ve seen a lot of general info online, but I’m hoping to hear from people who’ve actually been through it.
•What are the showers and toilets like during BCT, and how does it usually work day to day?
•Are you allowed to bring basic health/hygiene items like eye drops, lotion, etc., or is everything issued?
•How are periods typically handled during BCT? Do you bring your own supplies or are they provided? I’ve heard some women have very light or non existent periods during BCT, how common is that?

I know BCT isn’t supposed to be comfortable, I’m just trying to get a realistic picture ahead of time. :)
Thanks

Ait travel

I’m supposed to report to AIT tomorrow, my orders has a flight on there, but it’s literally like 2 hours away from me and I’d rather be dropped off. Can I do that?

HBL is over and we have 0630 PT tomorrow.

PSG pushed out the good ole upcoming AFT, pee per test, weapons qual (on a weekend) HT and WT, and mandatory PT everyday no exceptions for this whole month. 🥲 It was fun was it lasted. And so tomorrow begins with people dying a half mile into the company run, fake interest about what you did over HBL, and starting vehicles that haven’t moved for a month with a drip pan over the exhaust. Not a lot of good stuff to hunt chap. Anybody got any thing positive to say?

No alcohol tonight, I have PT tomorrow boys have fun without me.

Am I Weird??

So I recently moved to my actual barracks room after leaving the reception barracks at JBER. But for some reason these feel lonelier than the ones over there. I haven’t been able to meet my roommate since they’re on leave and the silence is killing me. I wasn’t able to take holiday block leave and I haven’t met my command and won’t be able to until this Monday. I have no car either so I can’t go buy stuff to decorate my room to make it feel like home. Not to mention taxis cost a fortune which is not a great way to spend money imo. What would y’all do in this situation cause I could use some advice cause ain’t no way. I love this place so far, but not being able to do stuff I want to is killing me since I don’t have a car. Quiet is nice, but too much quiet is the opposite

Weekly Question Thread (01/05/2026 to 01/11/2026)

This is a safe place to ask any question related to joining the Army. It is focused on joining, Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT), and follow on schools, such as Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP), and any other Additional Skill Identifiers (ASI).

We ask that you do some research on your own, as joining the Army is a big commitment and shouldn't be taken lightly. Resources such as GoArmy.com, the Army Reenlistment site, Bootcamp4Me, Google and the Reddit search function are at your disposal. There's also the /r/army wiki. It has a lot of the frequent topics, and it's expanding all the time.

/r/militaryfaq is open to broad joining questions or answers from different branches.
Make sure you check out the /Army Duty Station Thread Series, and our ongoing MOS Megathread Series. You are also welcome to ask question in the /army discord.

If you want to Google in /r/army for previous threads on your topic, use this format:
68P AIT site:reddit.com/r/army

I promise you that it works really well.

This is also where questions about reclassing and other MOS questions go -- the questions that are asked repeatedly which do not need another thread. Don't spam or post garbage in here: that's an order. Top-level comments and top-level replies are reserved for serious comments only.

Finally: If you're not 100% sure of what you're talking about, leave it for someone else who is.
