A Growing Rot
Hey friends. With this latest batch of additions I bring an unfortunate and concerning message that needs to be shared.
If we don't address this as a community I fear we endanger the most vulnerable among us.
Lets talk about the 'single artist near you' scam. A scam that I believe is slowly rotting away at the trust and structure of the communities it affects.
The accounts running these scams have taken victims for tens of thousands of dollars when they have an opportunity and the right victim.
Day to day though, these accounts appear to be single artists near you. Occasionally, they will not be 'near you', but they will still be lying about their location to work toward a larger scam. These accounts will actually produce unique art if you pay them, deepening your trust...
They will often start out accepting commissions as an entry to talk about money. Once they feel you are worth a bit more time they will try a number of tactics to get money out of people.
We have seen stories like 'my cat is sick','my ex is abusive and took my money', 'I just made a bunch of money investing and you can too', 'I know your kinks and your name from paying me, now you pay so I don't expose you'...
For many users and some admins this appears to be a real artist. Some have been hesitant to remove these users because they make real art, thinking the art is the end goal of the scam, and since its real the user must be real.
We are now seeing a LARGE spike in accounts claiming to be 'single artists near you' that have suspiciously linked art styles and metadata that indicates there is some kind of an art-farm in on this scam helping to make these accounts appear more legitimate.
We are seeing users fall over themselves to defend these accounts, thinking the scammer has feelings for them. These accounts are flirty, they pose as single attractive young artists in the fandom and flirt with admins and users, growing a following that blossoms into a rot that infects chats.
When victims fall for these scams the scammers will try to dig in and get the victim removed, fabricating evidence and harassing the victim in chats. They use their connections flirting and art gained them to spread confusion.
Admins might vouch for them because 'they made me art'.
That eventually leads to a real local furry finding the scammer, getting flirted with, then feeling safe to trust the user because admins and other furries are trusting them.
This leads to massive losses in our communities when they find the right victim. It leads to distrust and mental health issues that need to be addressed before this gets worse.
Scams by strangers make you fear strangers. Scams by people you trust and you think care about you fuck you up and lead to suicides.
I am asking everyone to come together as a community and start making noise when you see these romance scammers in your chat.
Our fear is that some admins have already fallen down this hole. These scammers find ways to insist the dating needs to be a secret. They blackmail when it makes sense.
We have found chats that refuse to remove some of these accounts even after a victim came forward.
That simply isn't ok for our community. It is going to cost money and lives frankly.
So with that, I want to share two listings that sparked this.
Yasmin and Esther
These accounts have both been found to be dating users that commissioned them while lying about their location.
Both accounts have the same fursona denoscriptive wise.
Both stole hundreds under these accounts and broke hearts, making users they stole from think they cared.
We believe this group is running more than 20 accounts dedicated to the 'single artist near you' scam.
If you see them in any chats, or any accounts that appear to be romance scammers its time to call it out in the chat and potentially save some lives.
By banding together we can stop this rot from spreading. I simply cant do this one on my own.
