Travell Off Path has compiled a list of 7 ideal cities for digital nomads. We translated and are ready to agree or argue. Why don’t you join us?

Madrid. It has historic architecture, museums, developed infrastructure and moderate apartment prices (compared to Barcelona). While in Barcelona, rents have risen by 25%, in Madrid by 12%.

Valencia. A fantastic city that makes up for its smallness in style and design. Not by chance, it is home to famous architect Santiago Calatrava. And paella was invented here as well.

Seville. It is also the birthplace of flamenco and the capital of Andalusia. It is warmer and drier than the rest of Spain. It’s a peculiar city in which different cultures mingle.

Cadiz. If you’re a fan of sherry, this is the place to come. It’s the oldest city in Europe and a paradise for history buffs. The city once served as a port for ships that set out to discover the new world.

San Sebastian. Resort city on the Bay of Biscay, located in the mountainous Basque Country. It’s known for its beaches and restaurants with inventive Michelin-starred chefs. Many consider it the most beautiful city in Spain.

Palma de Mallorca. The largest of the Balearic Islands is a great option for digital nomads. It’s relatively warm all year round, not too expensive and has great beaches. Ideal for those who want an island, but with infrastructure.

Barcelona. You already know all about it. The users of Nomadlist rate the city with 3.5 stars (out of 5). do you agree with the rating?

⚡️ We find Madrid, San Sebastian and Cadiz the most attractive places to work. These cities combine history, convenient cafes, and the right infrastructure for work.

It’s like working on an island is a little harder than in the city. What do you think?

Monday news trio 📅

Spanish Cuisine ranked third best in the world by TasteAtlas (first place went to Italian cuisine, and the second — to Greek). Iberian ham (aka jamón) got the highest rating, followed by Manchego cheese, fried fish, espetos (fish on a skewer), grilled shrimp, and, of course, paella.

The weather continues to amaze: the heat of 30 degrees this week will be replaced by rain, strong winds and low temperatures, which are more characteristic of this time of year. In some regions, the temperature will drop to 7-10 degrees.

In Barcelona, the number of the homeless growing rapidly. In Catalonia, most of the funds allocated to the fight against homelessness. First, a homeless person is registered (this is necessary to access basic services), and after a while they can receive the cherished documents necessary for life and work.

News digest ⚡️

The Spanish government is planning to introduce a new university entrance exam. Today, hundreds of students will write a pilot version of it and test its different models. The changes are aimed at encouraging critical thinking and reasoning instead of rote learning.

If you don’t believe in overtourism, here’s a fact: In 2022, Barcelona’s metropolitan beaches welcomed about 11 million visitors. The occupancy rate affected all municipalities, with Castelldefels being the most visited.

The green metro line has a new addition: a new train, so far 1 in 50. The old trains will gradually be replaced with new, more comfortable and environmentally friendly ones, and this will last until the summer of 2024.

And here’s how the AI sees overtourism 👆🏼

Some startups founded after 2020 that are interesting to watch 👀

There’s a coffee community, a platform for finding a second home, and fair use of personal data.

Vivla is originally from Madrid. The company helps with the purchase of shared ownership of second homes in top European countries. Each owner of such a home can purchase up to 4 shares with a guaranteed six-week vacation on each. The company takes care of all the typical hassles: furnishing, repairs and property management. Already raised $30 million.

GoodNews is based in Barcelona in a pandemic. In its chaos, the guys decided to fill the city’s neighborhoods with something positive. They turned a newsstand into a coffee shop where coffee was poured in exchange for a story from customers. They had to tell them what good things had happened to them in the past few days. Gradually the kiosk evolved into a brand and a community of people with a good mission and good coffee. Now here they are developing best practices for growing coffee, promoting sustainable agriculture and knowing everything about coffee.

QueryLayer was invented in Valencia. Their platform helps companies become «brands of good data». How? Using automated workflows and PrivacyUX, they build and maintain customer loyalty through transparent use of their personal data.

Yumminn was founded in Barcelona in 2021. It is an app for restaurants integrated with point of sale (POS) systems. With it, restaurant customers can pay their own bill in seconds. Users simply scan a QR code at the table, view their bill, then it can be split and leave a tip. The young company has already received 1.4 million euros.

Wednesday, dudes! News digest 📅

Barcelona will become the first city in Spain to make a public pet cemetery. The city council will invest 1.1 million euros in the project and customers will have to pay about 200 euros for the service of burying a pet.

Spain does not want to make anti-inflationary food basket following the example of France. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), prices have risen 16.6% compared to last year. Some companies are trying to help customers with discounts (such as Carrefour and Eroski), and some supermarkets will cease to be profitable if prices fall.

Barcelona has lost the first place in the ranking of the most competitive tourist cities, now it is taken by Madrid. Third place went to Valencia, and San Sebastian is in fourth place.

There is one beautiful promenade in Barcelona 🪩

Okay, there's more than one. But this one I want to tell you more about.

«Escaleras y Mirador Vela» is a project by the architectural bureau External Reference. You can walk, run and do sports here, take pictures or look at the waves. If the facade reminds you of sea salt crystals, it is no coincidence that they inspired the authors, and the «brokenness» of the promenade refers to the sea rocks and their texture.

In neighboring France, a wedding costs 16,500€. It's not just the general price increase, but also the Spanish desire for a fun and noisy wedding and the post-pandemic wedding boom.

Spanish fashion giant Inditex, which owns Zara, announced record profits. The company's net income rose 27% and sales exceeded pre-pandemic levels.

The hero of Instagram, TikTok, the menace of diets and the bakery trend that the whole world is sick of 🤒

The New York roll is a new delicacy that has crossed the continent because of its popularity, now you can try it in Barcelona as well. It is a bun made of croissant dough, only swirled and decorated with something sweet and pretty. Inside most often you can find a filling of chocolate and pistachios. The roll was invented in New York City, in the southern part of Manhattan, at a bistro with a Parisian atmosphere called Lafayette Café & Bakery.

In Barcelona, look for it at BO&MIE, and the rolls in the photos are from there.

A selection of Tuesday's news 📅

Better, perhaps, a magnet: an American woman got a Besòs Mar tattoo thinking that the innoscription translates to «sea kisses», but it turned out to be the name of the L4 line subway station. She found out about it because of her tattoo video, which (expectedly) went viral. What's your favorite station?

The Institute for Regional and Urban Research in Barcelona (IERMB) found the safest city. It is San Cugat del Vallès, a small green Catalan town. Residents rate its safety at 7.24 out of 10, and this is the highest rating among cities with a population of more than 75,000 people. In Barcelona, 21.5% of the population feels safe.

Sad news: Spain has fallen 3 places on the list of the happiest countries in the world. It gave way to Saudi Arabia and the UAE and took 32nd place. The happiest country was Finland. Sixth. Time. In a row.

Semana Santa (or Holy Week) is the week before Easter, during which celebrations are held throughout Spain ⚡️

It is an important religious holiday and a great way to immerse yourself in Spanish culture.

The celebration looks different in different parts of the country:
> Andalusia has elaborate and extravagant festivals;
> In Castile and León more somber events prevail;
> in Seville and Zamora there is a lot of singing;
> in Verges and Catalonia there are skeleton dances;
> and in Cuenca a drumbeat is heard everywhere.

After the cancelled pandemic celebrations, this year's Santa Semana promises to be more lavish than ever. Keep in mind that lodging costs go up because of the holiday, tourists arrive, and some stores, restaurants and tourist sites close.

This year's dates are April 2-9. Be sure to try the traditional treats of fried doughnuts, toast and Easter cakes.

News for soccer fans and stadium lovers: Barcelona has suspended the reconstruction of the stadium for 1.5 billion euros. The club is afraid of not being able to pay back the loans and plans to review the financing plan for the reconstruction. Initially, Barcelona had intended to finance the project with investments from the private placement market in the U.S., but inflation rates are affecting the cost of the loan.

Malaga's cyclists, unite! Thousands of cyclists will take to the streets of Málaga on Saturday to protest the lack of bike lanes. It will be led by the Ruedas Redondas Cyclists Association and their demand is to make the city more bicycle friendly and install more bike lanes. While there are more than 1,200 km of road for motorists, cyclists have only 46 km.
