The hero of Instagram, TikTok, the menace of diets and the bakery trend that the whole world is sick of 🤒

The New York roll is a new delicacy that has crossed the continent because of its popularity, now you can try it in Barcelona as well. It is a bun made of croissant dough, only swirled and decorated with something sweet and pretty. Inside most often you can find a filling of chocolate and pistachios. The roll was invented in New York City, in the southern part of Manhattan, at a bistro with a Parisian atmosphere called Lafayette Café & Bakery.

In Barcelona, look for it at BO&MIE, and the rolls in the photos are from there.

A selection of Tuesday's news 📅

Better, perhaps, a magnet: an American woman got a Besòs Mar tattoo thinking that the innoscription translates to «sea kisses», but it turned out to be the name of the L4 line subway station. She found out about it because of her tattoo video, which (expectedly) went viral. What's your favorite station?

The Institute for Regional and Urban Research in Barcelona (IERMB) found the safest city. It is San Cugat del Vallès, a small green Catalan town. Residents rate its safety at 7.24 out of 10, and this is the highest rating among cities with a population of more than 75,000 people. In Barcelona, 21.5% of the population feels safe.

Sad news: Spain has fallen 3 places on the list of the happiest countries in the world. It gave way to Saudi Arabia and the UAE and took 32nd place. The happiest country was Finland. Sixth. Time. In a row.

Semana Santa (or Holy Week) is the week before Easter, during which celebrations are held throughout Spain ⚡️

It is an important religious holiday and a great way to immerse yourself in Spanish culture.

The celebration looks different in different parts of the country:
> Andalusia has elaborate and extravagant festivals;
> In Castile and León more somber events prevail;
> in Seville and Zamora there is a lot of singing;
> in Verges and Catalonia there are skeleton dances;
> and in Cuenca a drumbeat is heard everywhere.

After the cancelled pandemic celebrations, this year's Santa Semana promises to be more lavish than ever. Keep in mind that lodging costs go up because of the holiday, tourists arrive, and some stores, restaurants and tourist sites close.

This year's dates are April 2-9. Be sure to try the traditional treats of fried doughnuts, toast and Easter cakes.

The club is afraid of not being able to pay back the loans and plans to review the financing plan for the reconstruction. Initially, Barcelona had intended to finance the project with investments from the private placement market in the U.S., but inflation rates are affecting the cost of the loan.

Malaga's cyclists, unite! Thousands of cyclists will take to the streets of Málaga on Saturday to protest the lack of bike lanes. Hola! Thursday News 🥸

Farmers in the Murcia region are planting new varieties of fruit trees to combat climate change. It will take 15 to 25 years for the plantations to make a profit for the farmers.

Metro Barcelona musicians will have to undergo a casting process before they can start working. Happy Friday, everyone! Here's some news 📅

If you have a paid subnoscription to El País or have been looking for a book club for a long time, this news is for you: last year the newspaper launched a reading club. They wanted to create a community for subscribers outside of journalism. Any paying subscriber can join. The editorial team announces the next book to read once a month. You can participate online or offline.

Tourism is returning to the pre-covid numbers: already in February, 2.46 million people were employed in the tourism sector in Spain. Hiring in travel agencies, tour operators and the hotel industry has increased.

Spring is here! So we are reminded that on the night of March 26 we will switch to daylight saving time. Several years ago, the EU wanted to abolish the transfer of hours, this is opposed by both ordinary residents and experts who argue that the standard time increases the amount of morning sunlight and improves sleep, but the EU governments could not agree.

On Friday, we mentioned the animal rights law. We love animals, Wedoo has a separate tag for them, so let’s talk about the points in the law 📜

Now banned:
◾️ Displaying and dogs, cats and ferrets in pet stores for commercial purposes.
◾️Keep dogs and cats in enclosed areas. Also, animals may not be left on patios, balconies, roofs, storage rooms, basements, patios or vehicles on a regular basis.
◾️No wild animals allowed in circuses or other cultural performances. Failure to comply with the rule will result in a fine of up to 200 thousand euros.
◾️Individuals are not allowed to breed pets. Only registered professionals who comply with all animal welfare safeguards are allowed.
◾️Cock fights are prohibited. Previously they were held in the Canary Islands and Andalusia, now they will be allowed only «for the selection and improvement of the breed and its export» to countries where such shows are allowed. Fines for non-compliance with this law will be up to 200,000 euros.

Also:
◾️Leave an animal alone unattended for more than 3 consecutive days. With dogs, this period is reduced to 24 hours.
◾️To buy or shelter a dog, you have to take a training course. It will be free and valid indefinitely. The dog owner will need to take out third-party liability insurance, which includes insurance for those responsible for the animal. For some reason, this rule does not apply to hunting or service dogs.
◾️All cats must be spayed before they are six months old. Exception: cats of registered breeders.
◾️Some animals can no longer be kept as pets. Their list has not yet been compiled, but it is expected to include parrots, turtles, chameleons and the more familiar guinea pigs, chinchillas and hamsters.

Where in Spain are rental prices rising fastest?

According to the real estate portal Idealista, the average rental price in the country last year rose by almost 9%, the highest in the history of the portal. Let's figure out where rents are going to cost a big penny.

🔸 The 1st place has Malaga, here the rent increased by 23%. The average price in February was 12.2€/m2. In the center is even more expensive, here a meter costs 13.8€.
🔸 In second place is Barcelona, here the price increase was 20%. Despite the lower percentage, it remains the most expensive city in Spain. A square meter here costs 19.4€.
🔸Valencia is in third place. Here a meter costs 11.5 €/m2.
Now for the neighborhoods:
- In the Old City the increase was 29%.
- In the Eixample, 29.4%.
- In Camins el Grau, 24.2%.
🔸 Moving on. Palma de Mallorca is next, here the rent increased by 18% (13,6€/m2).
🔸In 5th place is Madrid. 11% growth and 16.6€/m2.

Independent appraisal company Gesvalt counted that rents have increased significantly in the province of Malaga and the Costa del Sol. According to their data, the price per meter in Marbella reached 17.28€, 27% more than a year ago. In Estepona, the rent was also 12.89€ per square meter, an increase of 23% over last year. Benalmadena and Mijas also saw a 20% increase.

Also, the number of apartments for rent decreased, as many owners took advantage of selling their homes or simply chose to remove them from the market. The number of offers fell by 17% on average across the country. Madrid, where the number of available apartments has fallen by a total of 32%, and Barcelona (28%) have been hit hardest.

Some landlords are raising rental prices so as not to lose purchasing power, they are also, like everyone else, affected by inflation. Also, many landlords at the end of their contracts decide not to rent anymore or sell their homes.

Let's talk about surveillance, Spain, and telecommuting 👀

Before the pandemic, remote work was a luxury available to a few. Now more people work from home, but it hasn't gotten any easier.

Spanish executives are using surveillance tools — keyloggers that record users’ actions and programs that track log-in times. The Spanish newspaper El País writes that workers suffer from «productivity paranoia» because of this.

The distrust is due to the still low prevalence of remote work. The exception here is large companies, especially those working in the field of telecommunications. With the remote format they attract and retain young talent who need flexibility.

But most employees need to be seen in the office to be considered productive. That said, studies say the opposite — someone who doesn't waste time commuting works more efficiently. According to their findings, the time saved by the employee is spent... at work. Debatable, but who are we to argue with research from the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research?

🤚🏻If you work for a Spanish company, tell us about your experience. Have you noticed any surveillance attempts or enjoy total trust?

Hola! Tuesday's news 📅

Public transportation is becoming more and more comfortable: The first electric bus started running in Seville. It's easier to get in with a stroller, it charges quickly, rides quieter, safer and doesn't pollute the air. We're waiting for one of these in Barcelona!

This summer the San Adria de Besos beach will open. It has been closed for 2 years because of heavy metals found on the surface of the water. In April, the beach will begin to be cleaned and decontaminated, and by the end of July, the fences, which have already become part of the landscape, will be removed.

Yesterday most flights between Spain and Germany were cancelled because of the largest strike by railroad and airport workers. International airports in Frankfurt and Munich were not working and Deutsche Bahn trains were disrupted. Whether transportation will be disrupted today is not yet known, but keep in mind.

Wednesday News 🇪🇸

A Samsung ad on a cathedral in Barcelona continues to motivate people to argue and make negative comments on the World Wide Web. The fact that Samsung is funding the restoration only complicates things. Some residents think that despite the funding, advertising should not be so aggressive, and some think that in this case the end justifies the means.

Remember the news about that tourism in Spain is back to pre-covid numbers? The country now needs more than 60,000 additional workers in the hospitality industry. The industry is now short of workers, and in January alone Spain welcomed 4.1 million foreign tourists, a 65.8 percent increase over the same period last year.

Airport staff strikes in Spain, which began Feb. 27 and will last until at least April 13, will affect travel during Semana Santa. Airplane service, checks and baggage drop-offs are now taking longer. So if you're flying somewhere, get to the airport early.
