Entry rules: 90 days method 📅

Let’s understand the Schengen «90 days» rule, according to which you can only stay in the EU for 3 months during each 180-day period. It turns out that you can only stay in the Schengen area for 6 months per year.

However, it is very easy to get confused by the rules. Is it possible to leave the country and if you leave early for 3 days, can they then be used? These are the kinds of questions we’ll answer today.

What counts as a «day»?
Any time spent in the EU/Schengen area counts as one day, even a couple of minutes.

There are special calculators to calculate days. Some spend the limit in one trip, while others enter the country several times. It is better not to reach the limit, better to leave a couple of days «in reserve,» for example, in case of a strike and flight delays.

What if I live in the EU?
If you are not an EU citizen but live in one of the EU countries — with a visa or a residence permit — then obviously the 90-day rule does not apply to your country of residence.

Things change when you go to another EU country. For example, if you live in France and like to go on vacation to Spain, you have to watch your 90 days.

In practice, as a rule, there are virtually no border controls when traveling through EU countries. It is unlikely that your passport will be stamped or even checked. However, the rules do formally apply.

What are the penalties for overstaying?
There are several: you may be fined, deported, and prohibited from re-entering the EU. Different countries apply different measures. Most apply the harshest penalties.

The most likely scenario is a fine. The French authorities fine 198€ and stamp the person for exceeding the period of stay. It can lead to additional complications in the future and can make it difficult to obtain a visa.

What if I am married to an EU citizen?
EU and Schengen citizens enjoy freedom of movement and are not subject to the 90-day rule. However, this does not apply to non-EU spouses.
However, EU citizenship can be obtained through marriage.

What if I get a new passport?
People traveling under the 90-day rule are usually stamped in their passports upon entry and exit. Passports are also scanned at entry and exit, so the record exists on more than just the stamped page of the passport. That’s why blank pages on a new passport don’t give you an extra 90 days.

Do you have fantasies about what kind of renovations you would do if you had 250,000€ to spare?

There is a visual answer to the fantasy. One businessman took and spent that amount to renovate a penthouse. Douglas Lowe bought the house in the Eixample neighborhood in 1999 for 500,000€. In 2017, he decided the house needed renovation. In a year he turned a 2-bedroom penthouse into a 3-bedroom penthouse, the house is now worth between 1.7 and 2 million euros.

What do you think of the result, is it worth the money?

The authorities of Catalonia want to create a «water circle» around it. The drought has forced to think about the optimization of water resources and their preservation. The task of the «circle» will be to collect wastewater from towns and industrial plants, purify it, return it to the rivers and then collect it again to pass it through «filters» of drinking water and use the water again.

Now a tourist spot, formerly the main meeting place for Catalan modernists.

4 gats is a bohemian café in the medieval quarter of Barcelona, opened in 1897 in the image and likeness of the Black Cat in Paris. Originally it was a small hotel and cabaret and frequented by Picasso and Gaudi. There is an atmosphere of the past and an interesting interior. You can book a table on the website.

Montjuïc is not only the name of our editor's future indie band

It's a 173-meter hill in Barcelona. There's the MNAC Museum of Catalan Art and the Bernat Picornell Pool. It's a whole sports complex with 3 pools: a 50-meter indoor pool, a 50-meter outdoor pool and a diving pool. They are open all year round.

If you don't want to go to the museum or the pool, there are gardens and parks. And even the Magic Fountain! It's at least nice to wander around, look at the city from above and go into the castle. Here you can see what goes on in the castle. In the evening you can go watch an open-air movie, just take a plaid.

Do you like being here?
