Airalo is the world's first eSIM card store, offering travelers access to over 200 eSIM cards worldwide

In Spain, a 1 GB, 7-day validity card will cost you $4.50, a 5 GB, 30-day validity card will cost $11.50. There are six tariffs in total, with the highest being 20 GB and a month for $26.

Seems like a very useful thing to have. You won't have to search for wifi, roaming out of the mountains in the Alps, or buy expensive and slow internet just to call a cab or download a letter from the post office.

Here's a list of devices that support eSim. There's a website, and there are apps on iOS and Android.

Share other useful apps and services if you know of any.

Let's tell you about this interesting project

Mise En Scène — a store with unique things, modern brands and classic ones. Rather not even a store, but a boutique with treasures at a price 2 times lower. Here you can find a Loewe bag or a pair of interesting Nike sneakers. Adding to the charm is the fact that it's a family business run by cousins Mikaela and Ines. They believe that vintage fashion will beat fast-fashion, and they're stoked for «democratic luxury» and sustainability.

Fashionistas and hunters of rare vintage will love it here. Things here can not only be bought but also sold. If you know similar cool projects, share in the comments.

Have you noticed that beaches are disappearing in Barcelona?

Yes, it's hard to see from the shore, but it's true. Why?

In 2010, Barcelona's 9 city beaches were filled with 700,000 cubic meters of sand. Since then 70% of this sand has disappeared, the beaches lose about 30,000 cubic meters of sand per year. Some of the sand is recovered from breakwaters and put back in, but this is now looked at as a useless and harmful solution, a waste of money.

The rate of erosion along the east coast of Spain has accelerated over the last 20 years. This is partly due to storms and rising sea levels, but there are other factors too. Local authorities have found themselves in the predicament of trying to balance economic needs and the environment, with no viable solutions available. Solutions are «out of fashion» and new solutions are not yet available. This complex situation could mean the end of Barcelona’s beaches.

Spanish News Monday 🇪🇸

How is the heat wave affecting tourism? Travelers are choosing northern European destinations, looking for cooler weather, while tourism industry representatives are demanding action from the authorities.

Although the average salary (at 1822€) in Spain has risen to a record high, after increasing by 4% last year, purchasing power has not increased. Quite the opposite, in fact. Because of inflation, people are spending less than the year before.

Because of the heat has warmed not only the air, but also the water. The average water temperature off the coast of Spain in mid-July reached 24.6 degrees, a new record. This is an average, in some places the sea has warmed up to 28 degrees.

How can the self-employed in Spain take sick leave? More precisely, to request sick leave 🇪🇸

You can do it! Good news for autónomos or freelancers in Spain, one of the most difficult countries in Europe for self-employment. This is because you have to pay taxes and a monthly social security contribution on the first euro you earn. The contribution now depends on the amount of earnings, but is roughly 230€ for low earners, 320€ for medium earners and 500€ for high earners.

Paying for sick leave due to illness or accident is one of the benefits freelancers receive. Whether you have multiple clients, own your own business or work for a single company, you as a sole proprietor are ennoscriptd to paid sick leave.

The Spanish Social Security Administration clarifies that if, due to illness or accident, a person is unable to temporarily perform their work, both the necessary medical care and economic benefits can be requested.

How does this work?
If you are sick or have an accident that is not work-related, you are only ennoscriptd to receive your wages from the fourth day of your vacation.

You must fulfill a number of requirements to receive the benefit:
1. You must be registered with the Régimen Especial de Trabajadores Autónomos (RETA). This is a special registry for entrepreneurs
2. You must make all social security payments on time.
3. And make social security contributions for at least 180 days in the 5 years preceding the illness or accident.

The maximum period of temporary leave is 12 months with periodic medical examinations. However, additional extensions of leave for a maximum of 6 months are possible.

How do I apply for sick leave?
1. First of all, you should go to your doctor and ask for «baja» (sick leave) or vacation. If the doctor deems it justified or necessary, he or she will issue an official sick leave form.
2. You should also notify your insurance company. You can find out which Mutua you belong to from the original RETA document proving your registration as an autónomo.
3. Next, you need to fill out an official social security document. There you must indicate why you are on vacation and explain the situation. You can download the form online, but you will have to go to the social security office to present it with your documents. If your illness prevents you from doing this, you can have someone else do it for you by giving them a certified photocopy of your ID. For example, TIE.

How much sick leave will I receive?
In the case of leave due to general sickness or an accident not at work, you will be paid 60% of the self-employed regulatory base (average earnings per month). You will receive this from the 4th to the 20th day of your leave. If the illness lasts longer than 20 days, this amount increases to 75% of the same base.

If you have a long illness, remember, however, that you must continue to pay social security contributions during the first 2 months of your vacation. This means that you will receive even less sick pay, as you will also have to pay a contribution from it. After the first 60 days, you don't have to pay any contributions.

Monday's news 🇪🇸

Neighboring Portugal has been voted the best country for digital nomads. The study was conducted by rental platform Flatio. The team surveyed 1,200 nomads around the world about their motivations, frustrations and favorite destinations, as well as taxes and housing. Thailand came in second place, with Spain in third place.

Usually we talk about successful startups, today we'll break the rule: Turkish food delivery startup Getir is leaving Italy, Spain and Portugal. The startup did great in the pandemic, but couldn't sustain the return of consumers in stores.

Saw an article recently with the resounding noscript «The counterculture phenomenon that made Barcelona a design center». Couldn’t pass it up

Turns out it was based on the book «Made in Spain: A Shopper’s Guide to Artisans and Their Crafts by Region». It came out this year, written by a Spanish-Australian citizen who has lived in Barcelona for over 20 years. Her stories on architecture and design regularly appear in leading international publications, and she herself leads architectural tours around the city.

Thought you might be interested in reading the article, taking a tour or bringing the book as a gift for an architect friend. Were right?
