During the Napoleonic wars, a French ship sank off the coast of Hartlepool. The only survivor was a pet monkey, who was dressed in military uniform. The law was that any French military found on British soil must be executed. So they ordered death by hanging. To this day, people from Hartlepool are affectionately known as ‘monkey hangers’.
