Beavers have to oil their fur several times a day to stay waterproof. A special waterproofing oil is created by internal glands and accessed through the cloaca. Beavers usually sit on their tail to oil and groom their fur because it allows easy access to the cloaca. They fill their front paws with oil, then use their paws, teeth and hind feet to work the oil into their fur. It takes several minutes to do the routine. Each hind foot has a toe with a double nail that works like a comb when oiling and grooming.
