In 2020, the Russian Orthodox Church closed its parishes due to anti-COVID restrictions and urged the worshippers to get vaccinated. Sergiy opposed this, for which he was excommunicated. He continued to conduct services and refused to leave the monastery of which he was the clergyman. The Russian Orthodox Church claimed he had occupied its property, and Sergiy was detained after a special forces raid on the monastery. The Russian Orthodox Church waged a media campaign to demonize Sergiy, claiming that he abused nuns' children, but these accusations did not materialize in court, the only real charge was "inciting suicidal actions" based on a video of one of his sermons where he says that a religious person should not fear death. For that and occupying the ROC's property, Sergiy received 3 year sentence, half as long as for the hate speech. The sentencing went almost unnoticed in the media, his supporters, who had been vilified as a destructive sect for many months, seemingly evaporated. His press secretary got the same sentence for the hate speech. They are not considered political prisoners.
