Kiczenski took the picture on March 13th after a solar wind stream hit Earth's magnetic field, sparking a G1-class geomagnetic storm. Auroras descended from Canada into the United States, and they brought STEVE with them.
STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement) is a recent discovery, written about for the first time in scientific literature only 3 years ago. It is a ribbon of hot (3000°C) gas, which arcs through the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere during some geomagnetic storms. The ribbon's purple hue is still a mystery; some research suggests the color comes from heated nitrogen.
Much about STEVE remains unknown, including its dynamics. Kiczenski's photo reveals a potential twist--literally, a twist in the lower 1/3rd of the ribbon. It will be interesting to see if such features recur when other photographers apply deep-sky techniques to STEVE. The purple ribbon will appear with greater frequency as Solar Cycle 25 intensifies, so more photo-ops are in the offing. Stay tuned!

I was Awakened fully in November 2020, after the elections were stolen. I had already become very uncomfortable with the pandemic situation, since I saw every medical and clinical protocol that I had ever been trained to implement (as a pharmacist) get tossed out the window. I saw our State Governor ban the use of safe and inexpensive medication to treat COVID, taking the power of treatment decision-making away from the patient and doctor. I was told by my "Fortune 10" employer that it was optional for me to administer the COVID immunizations to my nursing home patients, but then annual pay raises were denied to those pharmacists who refused to jab innocent people like guinea pigs. I was told the COVID vaccines were optional to receive, but then my nursing homes were insisting on seeing proof of my "vaccination" before letting me inside to do my work. I refused to give AND receive the experimental jab! I had no way to avoid the smothering evil of the jab, of the brain-probing PCR tests, or of the mask-wearing, so in Feb 2021, I "retired" and walked away from a 23-year career as a pharmacist. Now I am spending many hours a day doing research about the Truth—building my faith in God fearlessly, and sharing what I am learning with anyone who will listen...and window-visiting with my 80-year-old mother, who is locked in a nursing home that won't let me hug her unless I take the brain-probes or the jab.
