Alex Wides captured this amazing 360-degree panorama, in which the moon illuminates the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Three Peaks of Lavaredo) in Italy. Fog surrounds a large wooden cross and the photographer's tent on top of Mount Paterno, which peaks at an elevation of 9,000 feet. Above the cross, the Big Dipper (Ursa Major) is visible. A magnified shadow of the photographer and the cross is also cast onto the fog below, an optical phenomenon called a "Brocken Spectre," so named for the peak in Germany where it is frequently sighted.

Wides spent more than a month seeking the best weather for photographing the mountainside during late summer, looking for the clearest conditions under the influence of high-pressure weather systems. The hike up Mount Paterno took four hours, and he was stuck in the fog most of the time. After eating dinner and waiting for hours, the curtain of fog lifted, and the moon illuminated this magical scene. The cross on Mount Paterno is a memorial to Sepp Innerkofler, an Austrian mountaineer who died in 1915 defending the mountain against Italian forces during World War I.

LUNAR POLLEN CORONA: This week in Poland, photographer Marek Nikodem went out after dark to search for noctilucent clouds. He couldn't find any. "Instead," says Nikodem, "I noticed a pollen corona around the Moon." Here is what it looked like:

"Pine is strongly flowering now in Poland," explains Nikodem. "Strong evening winds picked up tiny pollen grains and carried them in front of the Moon."

Most readers have seen coronas around the sun and Moon before. They are usually caused by water droplets in clouds, which scatter light into ring-shaped forms. Pollen grains are even better at this than water droplets. The coronas they create are compact and intensely colorful.

Pollens are non-spherical--and this adds to their magic. Many pollens have air sacs to help carry them in the wind. These align the grains so that their coronas are elliptical, an effect which is seen in Nikodem's photo.

Spring is the season for pollen coronas, and they are often sighted in between sneezes. "While people suffering from hay fever are having a bad time, some sky watchers like me are actually enjoying themselves," says Nikodem.

I went outside yesterday looking for the silvery clouds. Instead I noticed a very intense pollen corona around the Moon. Pine is strongly flowering now in the Poland. Evening strong winds created perfect conditions for tiny pollen grains to be lifted and carried in the air. So while people suffering from hay fever are having a bad time, some sky watchers, for example me, are actually enjoying themselves.

The updated guidelines say employers may offer incentives for employees to provide documentation showing they have been vaccinated since requesting this proof "is not a disability-related inquiry" or an "unlawful request" under federal anti-discrimination laws. What's more, companies who choose to offer the vaccine on-site, or who incentivize employees to get vaccinated elsewhere, can't offer perks or punishments substantial enough to be "coercive".

The questions, which were by far the most important pieces of the new guidance, were tucked away at the bottom of the update, making the changes an easy thing for reporters to miss before a long holiday weekend.

Coercive Power

To use coercive power is to use position and power to influence another person's decision-making process. This is often done by threatening punishment or taking away something of value if an individual does not follow instructions. This type of influence can be found both in families and in the work environment.

For example, a business owner would be using coercive power if they threatened to fire employees who reported workplace discrimination practices.

Psychological Coercion

Coercive psychological systems use psychological force in a coercive way to cause the learning and adoption of an ideology or designated set of beliefs, ideas, attitudes, or behaviors. A victim may be subjected to various types of coercive influence, anxiety and stress-producing tactics over time.

In a psychologically coercive environment, the victim is forced to adapt in a series of small "invisible" steps. Each step is sufficiently small that the subject does not notice the changes or identify the coercive nature of the process until much later, if ever. These tactics can be reinforced in a group setting by well-intended, but deceived, "friends and allies" of the victim. (Good-cop/Bad-cop). This keeps the victim from setting up the ego defenses normally maintained in known adversarial situations.

Psychological coercion overcomes the individual's critical thinking abilities and free will - apart from any appeal to informed judgment. Victims gradually lose their ability to make independent decisions and exercise informed consent. Their emotional defenses, cognitive processes, values, ideas, attitudes, conduct and ability to reason are undermined, and decisions are no longer through meaningful free choice, rationality, or the inherent merit or value of the ideas or propositions being presented.
