A federal agency that investigated the fall of the Twin Towers is on the ground in Florida to determine whether to probe last week’s deadly collapse of the Champlain Tower, a new report says. 

Scientists and engineers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology arrived at the site on Friday to begin collecting data, the Miami Herald reported. 

The little-known agency, which is part of the Department of Commerce, is tasked with investigating disasters that either result in “substantial loss of life” or had the potential to cause such destruction, spokeswoman Jennifer Huergo told the outlet. 

The agency’s power comes from the National Construction Safety Team Act, a federal law passed after 9/11, which allows it to probe substantial building failures while focusing on recommended changes to codes, standards and practices to ensure similar disasters don’t reoccur.

“The NIST experts will work with federal, state and local authorities to identify and preserve materials that might be helpful in understanding why the collapse occurred,” the rep said in a statement.

The team will then collect evidence, including original drawings, pictures of the collapse, debris, soil samples and interviews with residents and staff, and attempt to figure out how the catastrophe happened — ➡️ a process that could take years to complete, the outlet said. ⬅️

Explanation: It may look like a paper Moon. Sailing past a canvas Sun. But those are not cardboard clouds. And it's not make believe.  The featured picture of an orange colored sky is real -- a digital composite of two exposures of the solar eclipse that occurred earlier this month. The first exposure was taken with a regular telescope that captured an overexposed Sun and an underexposed Moon, while the second image was taken with a solar telescope that captured details of the chromosphere of the background Sun. The Sun's canvas-like texture was brought up by imaging in a very specific shade of red emitted by hydrogen. Several prominences can be seen around the Sun's edge. Don’t worry, but a huge comet is headed toward our sun. Scientists found it while studying old images from 2014 to 2018 taken for the Dark Energy Survey. Two University of Pennsylvania astronomers, Pedro Bernardinelli and Gary Bernstein, spotted the object heading inward from the Oort Cloud, possibly from as far as half a light-year away. Many have been calling it a mega comet.

The object was originally designed 2014 UN271. It’s now been officially named Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein, for its discoverers.

It’s thought to be the largest comet yet discovered, possibly as big as a dwarf planet. It’s still far away and hard to see, but the current estimate suggests its nucleus, or core, is between 62 to 230 miles (100 to 370 km) in diameter. Whoa! That’s big for a comet.

The mega comet is not coming very close to us. It’ll make its closest approach in 2031, when it’ll sail just outside of the orbit of our sun’s 6th planet, Saturn. Saturn’s orbit is some nine and a half times farther from the sun than Earth’s orbit. So there’s no danger to us here.

2014 UN271’s unusual orbit, which takes it from deep in the Oort Cloud straight in toward the sun, is hundreds of thousands of years long, the exact number yet to be determined. Despite its large size for a comet and nearness to us in 2031, astronomers do not expect the mega comet to brighten enough for us on Earth to see without powerful telescopes.

Scientists are working on a paper about the new object, which should be published in the new few months.

Bottom line: Scientists discovered a new object headed toward the inner regions of the solar system. 2014 UN271 may be the largest Oort Cloud object currently known.

Bird handlers are devastated after THOUSANDS of homing pigeons vanished into thin air during a race across the UK.

Some 9,000 set off from Peterborough, Cambs, on Saturday on a journey to the North East that should take no more than three hours — but over half were still missing as by the time night drew in.

“We’ve seen one of the very worst ever racing days in our history,” pigeon hobbyist Richard Sayers wrote in a Facebook post after approx. 5,000 of the Peterborough racing birds failed to make the 170-mile round-trip flight.

The avian competitors, part of 250,000 pigeons released in approximately 50 racing events across Britain last weekend, remain unaccounted for. In fact, of the 250,000 only 10% returned on time, and tens of thousands have been reported missing across the country.

The developers of the Miami condo tower that collapsed were once accused of paying off local officials to get permits for the site — which needed $15 million in repairs just to bring it to code, a new report says.

Building rivals claimed that the partners behind Surfside Champlain Towers South were receiving preferential treatment when it came to getting through the permit system as the site was being built in 1981, the Washington Post said.

Surfside’s developers had contributed to the campaigns of at least two town council members, then demanded that the donations be returned when the allegations surfaced, according to the outlet.

Meanwhile, the 12-story tower had been on the verge of undergoing $15 million in renovations to pass a required 40-year certification when it collapsed Thursday, killing at least nine people and leaving more than 150 unaccounted for, the report added.

All of the principals believed to have been involved in the design and construction of the building are already dead, the outlet said.
