PAWTUCKET, R.I. —
A gunman who opened fire at a Rhode Island hockey rink on Monday afternoon killed his own son and his ex-wife, according to North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi.
Officials said the gunman, identified as Robert Dorgan, 56, then fatally shot himself.
Dorgan also wounded three other people, including his former mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lombardi said.
The victims have been identified as Dorgan's ex-wife, Rhonda Dorgan, and his adult son, Aiden Dorgan.
Rhonda Dorgan died of her injuries at the arena and Aiden Dorgan died later at the hospital, where he was taken to be treated for his injuries.
The three victims who were injured in the shooting were identified as Linda and Gerald Dorgan, who were the parents of Rhonda Dorgan. Both Linda and Gerald are currently hospitalized in critical condition.
The third victim was identified as Thomas Geruso, a friend of the Dorgan family, who is also in critical condition.
According to Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves, the shooting was domestic in nature, as the victims included members of the suspect's family and a family friend.
⬇️
"At least three bystanders were able to stop the suspect, " Goncalves said. "At that time, the suspect did reach for a second firearm and inflict a self-inflicted gunshot wound, which is what he succumbed to on scene."
Goncalves later identified Dorgan as the shooter, adding he also used the name Roberta and the surname Esposito.

PAWTUCKET, R.I. —
Court documents reveal the Pawtucket ice rink shooting suspect's gender transition and mental illness were a long-running source of family conflict.
The criminal and divorce documents reviewed by NewsCenter 5 date back to 2020...
Back in 2020, court records show, [Robert] Dorgan went to police about their father-in-law, who shared the same last name — Gerald Dorgan...
Gerald Dorgan [Robert's father-in-law] was charged with intimidation of witnesses and victims of crimes and obstruction of the judicial system. The charges were dropped in 2023, according to a filing by prosecutors, because Robert Dorgan, then going by the name Roberta Dorgan, was living in Florida and no longer wanted to pursue the case.
Robert Dorgan's gender transition — and a mental illness — was also noted in a 2020 divorce filing made by Rhonda Dorgan. Her filing, made the same week that Robert Dorgan went to police to complain about Gerald Dorgan [Robert's father-in-law], notes that the reason she was seeking the divorce was "Gender reassignment surgery narcissitic (sic) + personality disorder traits."
Those words are crossed out and replaced with "irreconcilable differences which caused the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage."
The divorce was finalized in 2021.
