EXTRA-PENETRATING SOLAR WIND MAKES PINK AURORAS: The solar wind was blowing past Earth faster than 600 km/s on March 21st when, suddenly, a pink ribbon of light snaked across the sky of Foxholes, NWT, Canada. John David McKinnon photographed the phenomenon:

"'Twas a night full of active auroras, some of which erupted with an extra burst of energy and lit up the sky with a mesmerizing 'Pink Fringe,'" says McKinnon.

This is also known as the "nitrogen fringe." Most auroras are green--the color of oxygen atoms struck by energetic particles from space between 100 km and 300 km above Earth's surface. Pink appears when energetic particles descend lower than usual, striking nitrogen molecules at the 100 km level and below. A gust of extra-penetrating solar wind thus painted the skies of Canada temporarily pink.

Another high-speed stream of solar wind will reach Earth 4 days from now. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for more scenes like this.

As of March 5, 2021, the U.S. Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) had received 31,079 adverse reaction reports for COVID-19 vaccines, including 1,551 deaths

Using March 5 VAERS statistics, assuming all deaths have been reported as required, the lethality rate of COVID-19 vaccines is 0.0028%

CDC statistics puts the death rate following COVID mRNA vaccination at 0.0024% — significantly higher than that following influenza vaccination at 0.0000265%

There are compelling reasons to suspect these vaccines may contribute to death further down the line, perhaps months or a few years into the future. AURORAS OVER AN ERUPTING VOLCANO: The last time a volcano erupted on Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula was almost 800 years ago. So consider this a 1-in-800-year shot: "On March 24th, I photographed the Geldingadalur volcano with auroras dancing overhead," reports Christopher Mathews.

Breaking 8 centuries of quiet, the volcano erupted last week on March 19th. Lava oozing through the ground was bright enough to see from Earth orbit as incandescent fountains illuminated the dark landscape.

Mathews immediately began planning his photo shoot. "The night the Geldingadalur volcano erupted, I began scouting locations for this shot," he says. "There were good auroras over the weekend, but cloud cover blocked them--a huge disappointment. Last night an unexpected snow squall appeared, blotting out the sky and even the eruption itself--another heart-breaker. But then, around midnight, the skies cleared and auroras promptly lit off over the volcano."

We won't have to wait 800 years for the next shot. Historical accounts and ancient lava flows show that whenever Geldingadalur has experienced a significant uptick in seismic activity, intermittent eruptions follow for 100 years or so. This eruption could signal a re-awakening.

"It was a magical sight," says Mathews, "one I took especially to heart because it happened to be my birthday!" Talk about birthday candles...

Climate-driven shifts in deep Lake Michigan water temperatures signal the loss of winter - Welcome to NOAA Research

In the new research, NOAA GLERL analyzes a 30-year, subsurface temperature dataset in order to observe what Lake Michigan’s deep waters are telling us about Earth’s changing climate. The scientists used a long string of high-tech thermometers called a thermistor string, which floats vertically in the water and records temperatures at different depths in the lake. This instrument has been recording water temperatures every hour almost continuously for the past three decades. Lake Michigan is likely the world’s only large lake with this type of long-term observations of water temperatures at depth. 

This groundbreaking research examines the lake’s year-round temperature changes throughout the water column, rather than just lake surface temperatures in the summer.
