What we knew in the early days
The claim is now everywhere: we had to lock down because we just didn't know about this virus. It was all very confusing and we had to play it safe. We had no other option because we just had no clarity about what we were dealing with. The precautionary principle dictated the unprecedented actions. Actually, the precautionary principle goes both directions. It also dictates that we not enact policies that we know for sure would wreck lives and liberties. They did it anyway, without sufficient knowledge that the measures would achieve any positive good. We approach the third year and people have forgotten that all the harms of lockdowns were strongly warned about by many voices in many venues. In addition, the virus was much better understood back then and openly discussed. We knew for certain that the panic and fear were being wildly overblown.

Ex-soccer star convicted of transphobia over 2017 social media post
A retired star of Greek soccer has been convicted to a commuted sentence of 10 months in prison and fined 5,000 euros over a transphobic social media post, in which he referred to gender reassignment as an "abomination" and likened trans people to pedophiles. Former AEK and Greece player Vassilis Tsiartas made the offending post in 2017 to express his objection to the legalization of sex reassignment surgery. Russian narrative gaining traction in Germany - study
The report authors urged the authorities to do more to counter what they see as disinformation from Moscow. The number of Germans who agree with Russia's position on the root causes of the Ukraine conflict has risen over the past several months, a recently published study reveals. The researchers categorically dismissed Moscow's version of events as "propaganda" and called on the German government to take action to counter it. BEST OF THE WEB: Leaked documents reveal British spies constructing secret terror army in Ukraine
Documents obtained by The Grayzone reveal plans by a cell of British military-intelligence figures to organize and train a covert Ukrainian "partisan" army with explicit instructions to attack Russian targets in Crimea. On October 28th, a Ukrainian drone attack damaged the Russian Black Sea fleet's flagship vessel in the Crimean port of Sevastopol. Moscow immediately blamed Britain for assisting and orchestrating the strike, as well as blowing up the Nord Stream pipelines - the worst acts of industrial sabotage in recent memory. The British Ministry of Defense issued a blustery denial in response, branding the accusations "false claims of an epic scale." Whoever was behind those specific attacks, suspicions of a British hidden hand in the destruction are not unfounded. New evidence shows US. 'warming' over last 50 years exaggerated by up to 50%
The widespread use of regularly adjusted global and local surface temperature datasets showing increasingly implausible rates of warming has been dealt a further blow with new groundbreaking research that shows 50% less warming over 50 years across the eastern United States. The research attempts to remove distortions caused by increasing urban heat and uses human-made structure density data over 50 years supplied by the Landsat satellites. The 50% reduction in the warming trend is by comparison with the official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) homogenised surface temperature dataset. The research was compiled by two atmospheric scientists at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Dr. Roy Spencer and Professor John Christy. They used a dataset of urbanisation changes called 'Built-Up' to determine the average effect that urbanisation has had on surface temperatures. Urbanisation differences were compared to temperature differences from closely spaced...

SOTT FOCUS: MindMatters: Truth-Killing Cancel Culture Has Always Existed to Bolster the Status Quo
The cancel culture phenomenon has reared its rancorous and destructive head to such a degree that many holding non-mainstream points of view are made to think twice about sharing them in public. For cancel culture doesn't merely seek to respond to the differing perspectives with counterarguments in honest debate. It seeks to stifle the message completely and even, in the worst cases, annihilate the speaker himself. While we're aware of how this pathological and ideological weaponization of rhetoric exists in contemporary times, the tools or modus operandi of cancel culture have actually been around for a good long time - especially when someone's particular message challenges conventional wisdom - or, in more meaningful cases, questions the higher truths of the reality in which we're immersed. Why has San Francisco DA vows to limit public's access to Pelosi attack evidence 'as much as possible'?
Releasing footage to media "not what we think is appropriate," prosecutor claims. The San Francisco prosecutor overseeing the trial of the man accused of attacking Paul Pelosi last week is vowing to sharply limit the public's access to key evidence surrounding the assault. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins told CNN on Wednesday that "a very limited number of family members" will be able to access both the 911 call made by Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, during the attack and the police body cam footage recorded by officers responding to that call.

BEST OF THE WEB: Will Biden gamble on a Ukraine 'coalition of the willing'?
The Washington establishment is considering a risky and ill-defined intervention in Europe. When Napoleon Bonaparte began his 1812 campaign to conquer Russia, he led the largest "coalition of the willing" in history. In addition to its French core, Bonaparte's army of more than 400,000 consisted of Italian, Dutch, German, and Polish soldiers. They were at best unenthusiastic. Frankly, other than the French, only Napoleon's Polish allies were truly eager to march on Moscow. By the time Bonaparte's multinational force reached Moscow, paralyzing cold, ruinous battles, exhaustion, disease, and poor logistical planning reduced the original invasion force to less than half of its original strength. It was not long before Prussia and its North German allies defected to the Russians while the remainder (minus the Poles) deserted or died on the march home.

1,300 Starlink satellite communication terminals stop working in Ukraine, second time in one month
More than 1300 Starlink terminals located on the territory of Ukraine have stopped their work. Lack of funding is cited as the reason for shutting down the terminals. It is reported by CNN. Comment: Lack of funding? The US is in the process of giving Ukraine $40 billion for its proxy-war against Russia. Since the Ukrainian side did not pay for the operation of the terminals, the owner company decided to turn them off. Comment: This, however, is a possibility. Because Ukraine has made it clear that it expects everything and yet it will pay for nothing. The saddest thing for Kyiv is that these terminals were actively used by the armed forces of Ukraine to ensure their activities. It is known that there are about 25 thousand Starlink terminals in Ukraine. Maintenance of each costs an average of 2,5 thousand dollars a month (according to the American press).

Scholz's China trip raises hackles
German diplomacy presented a riveting sight of "counterpoint" with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock hosting her G7 partners in Münster on November 3-4 even as Chancellor Olaf Sholz was emplaning from Berlin on a one-day visit to Beijing. The photo-op showed the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken flanking Baerbock at the main table with Under-secretary of State Victoria Nuland — best known as the master of ceremonies at the 2014 "Maidan" coup in Kiev in 2014 — peering from behind. Germany is catching up with photo journalism. Seriously, the photo couldn't have arrested more meaningfully for the world audience the split personality of German diplomacy as the present coalition government pulls in different directions. Quintessentially, Baerbock has highlighted her discontent with Scholz's China visit by assembling around her the like-minded G7 counterparts. Even by norms of coalition politics, this is an excessive gesture. When a country's top leader is on a visit abroad, a...

Berlin goes to Beijing: The Real Deal
With his inimitable flair for economic analysis steeped in historical depth, Professor Michael Hudson's latest essay, originally written for a German audience, presents a stunning parallel between the Crusades and the current "rules-based international order" imposed by the Hegemon. Professor Hudson details how the Papacy in Rome managed to lock up unipolar control over secular realms (rings a bell?) when the game was all about Papal precedence over kings, above all the German Holy Roman Emperors. As we know, half in jest, the Empire was not exactly Holy, nor German (perhaps a little Roman), and not even an Empire. A clause in the Papal Dictates provided the Pope with the authority to excommunicate whomever was "not at peace with the Roman Church." Hudson sharply notes how US sanctions are the modern equivalent of excommunication. Arguably there are Top Two dates in the whole process. The first one would be the Third Ecumenical Council of 435: this is when only Rome (italics mine)...
