1,300 Starlink satellite communication terminals stop working in Ukraine, second time in one month
More than 1300 Starlink terminals located on the territory of Ukraine have stopped their work. Lack of funding is cited as the reason for shutting down the terminals. It is reported by CNN. Comment: Lack of funding? The US is in the process of giving Ukraine $40 billion for its proxy-war against Russia. Since the Ukrainian side did not pay for the operation of the terminals, the owner company decided to turn them off. Comment: This, however, is a possibility. Because Ukraine has made it clear that it expects everything and yet it will pay for nothing. The saddest thing for Kyiv is that these terminals were actively used by the armed forces of Ukraine to ensure their activities. It is known that there are about 25 thousand Starlink terminals in Ukraine. Maintenance of each costs an average of 2,5 thousand dollars a month (according to the American press).

Scholz's China trip raises hackles
German diplomacy presented a riveting sight of "counterpoint" with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock hosting her G7 partners in Münster on November 3-4 even as Chancellor Olaf Sholz was emplaning from Berlin on a one-day visit to Beijing. The photo-op showed the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken flanking Baerbock at the main table with Under-secretary of State Victoria Nuland — best known as the master of ceremonies at the 2014 "Maidan" coup in Kiev in 2014 — peering from behind. Germany is catching up with photo journalism. Seriously, the photo couldn't have arrested more meaningfully for the world audience the split personality of German diplomacy as the present coalition government pulls in different directions. Quintessentially, Baerbock has highlighted her discontent with Scholz's China visit by assembling around her the like-minded G7 counterparts. Even by norms of coalition politics, this is an excessive gesture. When a country's top leader is on a visit abroad, a...

Berlin goes to Beijing: The Real Deal
With his inimitable flair for economic analysis steeped in historical depth, Professor Michael Hudson's latest essay, originally written for a German audience, presents a stunning parallel between the Crusades and the current "rules-based international order" imposed by the Hegemon. Professor Hudson details how the Papacy in Rome managed to lock up unipolar control over secular realms (rings a bell?) when the game was all about Papal precedence over kings, above all the German Holy Roman Emperors. As we know, half in jest, the Empire was not exactly Holy, nor German (perhaps a little Roman), and not even an Empire. A clause in the Papal Dictates provided the Pope with the authority to excommunicate whomever was "not at peace with the Roman Church." Hudson sharply notes how US sanctions are the modern equivalent of excommunication. Arguably there are Top Two dates in the whole process. The first one would be the Third Ecumenical Council of 435: this is when only Rome (italics mine)...

Why has San Francisco DA vowed to limit public's access to Pelosi attack evidence 'as much as possible'?
Releasing footage to media "not what we think is appropriate," prosecutor claims. The San Francisco prosecutor overseeing the trial of the man accused of attacking Paul Pelosi last week is vowing to sharply limit the public's access to key evidence surrounding the assault. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins told CNN on Wednesday that "a very limited number of family members" will be able to access both the 911 call made by Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, during the attack and the police body cam footage recorded by officers responding to that call.

Bank of England warns of longest recession in 100 years, 11% inflation expected this year
The Bank of England has warned the UK risked being plunged into the longest recession in 100 years after it pushed up the cost of borrowing to 3% in the biggest single interest rate rise since 1989. A 0.75% increase, the latest in a series of eight interest rate rises since last year, would not be enough to guarantee victory in the war against double-digit inflation, the Bank said, as it cautioned further action would be needed. The UK economy faces a "very challenging outlook", with a recession that began this summer now expected to last until the middle of 2024. Comment: Despite the endless speculation in this article about the 'possible' impact of this or that interest rate or decision, no one really knows what's up ahead, because there are numerous variables that the establishment does not control, and the current situation is unprecedented.

Netanyahu won 8-seat majority over opponents despite near-parity in raw votes
With the publication of the final election results Thursday night, the scale of the anti-Netanyahu political parties' self-exacerbated defeat was thrown into sharp relief, as the final vote tallies showed just 30,293 votes separating the opposing political camps. Although this gap represents less than one Knesset seat based on the total number of valid votes cast in the election, the incoming coalition will have a decisive eight-seat majority, with 64 of the 120 seats in the new Knesset. According to the final results, the right-wing religious alliance of the Likud, Religious Zionism, Shas and United Torah Judaism parties received a total of 2,303,964 votes.

Japan and the UK are set to signal a significant defence pact in December that can allow the nations to boost co-operation with the US within the Indo-Pacific and increase deterrence in opposition to the rising menace from China. Comment: Meanwhile Germany's Scholz said the world needs China and will benefit from cooperating with it, and the rising multipolar world powers. It seems that there's some serious fracturing amongst the old - increasingly irrelevant - world order. The nations will signal a Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA), in response to two individuals conversant in the talks. It will observe an identical deal Japan signed with Australia in January and is one other signal of Tokyo forging deeper defence ties with allies and companions to organize for the potential of a struggle with China over Taiwan. Graphene oxide? Nanobots? What is in the Pfizer vaccines? Recently, Dr David Nixon, a Brisbane GP, decided to find out, putting droplets of vaccine and the blood of vaccinated patients under a dark-field microscope. That's a more radical decision than it might sound. According to Sasha Latypova, a scientist with 25 years of experience in clinical trials for pharmaceutical companies, the contract between Pfizer and the US government prohibits independent researchers from studying the vaccines. They claim it would 'divert' these precious resources away from their intended use fulfilling an 'urgent' need. Is that true in Australia? Who knows? All the Commonwealth Department of Health has said about its contract with Pfizer is that it is commercial-in-confidence.

Which companies are quitting Twitter: The list
Since Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter last week, at least six major companies have stopped advertising on the platform over concerns about how the billionaire will affect content moderation policies on the app. During the rocky process of acquiring the platform, marked by U-turns, controversies, and lawsuits, Musk pledged to make Twitter a champion of free speech. This promise led many right-wingers to see Musk's takeover as a victory for conservatives over political correctness, though the Tesla CEO is yet to implement any changes to the way the platform moderates content. But where right-wingers saw potential, many companies appear to have spotted a risk of damage to their business, especially after a sudden surge of slurs and hateful comments were reported on the platform immediately following Musk's takeover.

BEST OF THE WEB: Lockdowns: The Great Gaslighting - A Damning Retrospective
The lockdowns of 2020 were very real. And few opposed them. More than two years since the lockdowns of 2020, the political mainstream, particularly on the left, is just beginning to realize that the response to Covid was an unprecedented catastrophe. But that realization hasn't taken the form of a mea culpa. Far from it. On the contrary, in order to see that reality is starting to dawn on the mainstream left, one must read between the lines of how their narrative on the response to Covid has evolved over the past two years. The narrative now goes something like this: Lockdowns never really happened, because governments never actually locked people in their homes; but if there were lockdowns, then they saved millions of lives and would have saved even more if only they'd been stricter; but if there were any collateral damage, then that damage was an inevitable consequence of the fear from the virus independent of the lockdowns; and even when things were shut down, the rules weren't...

UK mainstream media blames excess cardiac deaths on NHS failure, ignores obvious link with vaccines
After a brief period when post-Covid after-effects were identified as the main culprit for the large rise in excess non-Covid deaths in 2022, that theory now seems to have fallen out of favour. Is that because it dawned on them that if the virus is to blame, then by the same logic vaccine after-effects become implicated as well? Neither vaccine nor virus has made it into the latest explanations for the rise in heart and stroke deaths. The British Heart Foundation has released analysis laying the blame squarely on the reduced access to healthcare during the pandemic and the consequent backlogs and delays in the system. Here's BBC News:

Another study finds social scientists are no better at forecasting than laymen
Whether we should defer to 'experts' was a major theme of the pandemic. Back in July, I wrote about a study that looked at 'expert' predictions and found them wanting. The authors asked both social scientists and laymen to predict the size and direction of social change in the U.S. over a 6-month period. Overall, the former group did no better than the latter - they were slightly more accurate in some domains, and slightly less accurate in others. A new study (which hasn't yet been peer-reviewed) carried out a similar exercise, and reached roughly the same conclusion.

What is Canadian Bill C-11? A breakdown for Elon Musk
Bill C-11, the Trudeau government's latest effort to curb free speech on the internet, appears to be on new Twitter owner Elon Musk's radar for the first time, after right-wing activist group Canada Proud asked the Space X founder if he would help in the fight against Liberal censorship. "First I've heard" was Musk's response to a question from Canada Proud on whether he'd join the fight. For many Canadians, just the fact that Musk is acknowledging the legislation in the slight manner that he did is reason to celebrate.

Wild winds knock out power to 300K in western Washington state
Driving back to his North Everett home from Lynnwood on Friday night, Dan Laurence was reminded of a hurricane he experienced years before in Bermuda. All the lights were out, leaves were swirling, and branches were flying through the air. When he and his wife got inside, it felt like the entire house was vibrating. On the bluff below, cedar trees were dancing around like "bed knobs and broomsticks," he said. "It was really pretty wild." Peering into the darkness, they realized the wind had uprooted an 80-year-old elm tree in their neighbor's front yard. "This huge root ball was sticking up and you could see that it was just gone," he said. "It was the healthiest and biggest elm in the neighborhood." Similar scenes played out across Western Washington as fierce winds from the season's first major storm ripped through the region, cutting power to more than 300,000 customers from the Olympic Peninsula to the Cascade foothills.
