Wisconsin judge won't order sequestering of absentee ballots
A Wisconsin judge on Monday, less than 14 hours before polls opened, refused to order that military absentee ballots be pulled aside and sequestered until it can be verified that they were cast legally, saying that would be a "drastic remedy" that could disenfranchise voters. The Republican chair of the Wisconsin Assembly's elections committee along with a veterans group and other voters sued on Friday, seeking a court order to sequester the ballots. Waukesha County Circuit Judge Michael Maxwell denied that request for a temporary restraining order in a ruling from the bench following a two-hour hearing Monday afternoon. Why are people losing confidence in vaccines?
A new peer reviewed article in the journal Vaccine has been published comparing surveys data on attitudes to vaccination from before the pandemic with attitudes now. The authors report that "paradoxically, despite the success of COVID-19 vaccination campaigns, vaccine confidence has significantly declined since the onset of the pandemic". I am not quite sure why the authors appear so surprised at their result but a clue can be found in their use of the word "despite". In many countries the "success" of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign relied in large part in pressuring, bullying and sometimes coercing people to get vaccinated.

Fire breaks out at Chevron El Segundo refinery in California
Fire crews battled flames for more than two hours at the Chevron El Segundo refinery before extinguishing the blaze Tuesday night. The incident was reported around 6:15 p.m. at the fuel refinery in the 300 block of El Segundo Boulevard, the city of El Segundo said in an alert. The fire was extinguished as of 8:35 p.m. Footage from KTLA-TV Channel 5 showed crews spraying water on roaring flames in an unidentified part of the refinery.

A lone protester was arrested by police today after throwing eggs at King Charles and the Queen Consort during a walkabout in York. The royal couple were being welcomed to York by city leaders when the man threw three eggs at them, all of which missed before the pair were ushered away. The protester shouted 'this country was built on the blood of slaves' as he was being bundled to the ground by four police officers. Other people in the crowd started chanting 'God save the King' and 'shame on you' at the protester.

Meteor fireball over central Spain (Nov. 7)
This bright bolide is a Southern Taurid spotted over Spain on November 7, at 1:53 local time (equivalent to 0:53 universal time). The event was generated by a rock (a meteoroid) from Comet 2P/Encke that hit the atmosphere at about 110,000 km/h. The fireball overflew the provinces of Avila and Salamanca (Spain). It began at an altitude of about 106 km over Ávila, moved north, and ended at a height of around 62 km over the province of Salamanca. This bright meteor was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN) from the meteor-observing stations located at La Hita, Huelva, Sevilla, El Guijo, Calar Alto, Sierra Nevada, La Sagra, ESA Casas de Millán, and ESA Cebreros. The event has been analyzed by the principal investigator of the SMART project: Dr. Jose M. Madiedo, from the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC).

Northern beaked whale dies after washing ashore in France - normally a denizen of deep Arctic waters
A 7.6-meter (25-foot) whale died on a beach in northern France on Monday, hours after being discovered washed up and alive but wounded, authorities said. Experts had hoped the rising tide would come in time to help the cetacean back on its way, but the animal died as it struggled to reach the water. "It probably drowned" during its efforts, said Jacky Karpouzopoulos, head of CMNF, an association for the protection of wild mammals in northern France. The appearance of this type of beaked whale, a northern bottlenose, this far south is rare.

U.N. tells rich countries to pay $2 trillion a year for climate 'justice'
An annual transfer of funds from rich to poor countries, starting at around $2 trillion by 2030 and rising thereafter, is needed for climate "justice" according to a U.N.-backed report released Tuesday. China has been specifically excluded from the demand for reparations, which includes taxes for fossil fuel companies on their global "carbon profits," even as the Communist state's greenhouse gas emissions now exceed the entire rest of the developed world combined. The first one trillion dollars alone should come from rich countries, investors and multilateral development banks, declared the analysis commissioned by Britain and Egypt, hosts respectively of the 2021 U.N. climate summit in Glasgow and this week's COP27 event in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Massive waterspout filmed in Muğla, Turkey
A massive waterspout has emerged off the southwestern coast of Turkey. The breathtaking sight was reportedly captured from a town called Mugla that borders the Mediterranean Sea. The waterspout, which is a twisting column of air and water mist, appeared after a rainstorm passed through the area. Earlier this year a waterspout appeared off the coast of Taranaki, with one local saying it "lasted around a minute or so" before hitting land and disappearing. Western Nepal hit by magnitude 5.6 earthquake killing at least six people, officials say
A magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit western Nepal on Wednesday morning local time, killing at least six people, according to local officials. The epicenter of the quake was in Seti Zone, at a depth of 15.7 kilometers (9.7 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). It was 21 kilometers east of Dipayal, a municipality of Nepal's far western Doti district, the USGS said. At least six people have died and five are injured in the Purbichauki rural municipality of Doti district, police deputy superintendent Bhola Bhatta told CNN. Three houses were completely destroyed in the earthquake, he said, adding that a search and rescue operation was underway.
