An unlicensed doctor who circumcised nine boys with a soldering gun, leaving some of them in so much pain they could barely walk, has avoided jail time in Sweden.
The Syrian citizen and resident of Gavle, Sweden, said to be in his 30s, claimed to have trained as a doctor in Syria for nine months. He was charged with assault, causing bodily harm, and violating Sweden’s law on circumcision. Prosecutors asked for a two-year sentence, but the defendant walked away with a suspended sentence, community service, and a $10,000 fine.
Guardians of the boys had sought out the man to perform the circumcisions, which all took place between April and May 2018. They contacted him through the Bilaal preschool for Muslims and paid him around $230 for his services.
The board member who served as a go-between has been suspended and is facing deportation. The school has since been shut down for not meeting the country’s legal education requirements. Local media have suggested the school’s management is linked to an extremist network in Soderhamn.
Speaking earlier in the year, the man said he used a soldering gun as a way ‘to kill off the bacteria with heat’, and considered himself an expert in circumcision.
