🇰🇷🇷🇺🇺🇦🇰🇵 South Korean intelligence and military officials report that North Korea has deployed thousands of soldiers to Russia to support its war in Ukraine, with further deployments expected by year’s end.

Despite the perceived risks, experts suggest that North Korea’s involvement could yield strategic gains, especially if it secures stronger Russian backing in potential conflicts on the Korean Peninsula.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS)-affiliated Institute for National Security Strategy (INSS) speculates that North Korea is positioning itself ahead of the U.S. presidential election, believing a Trump victory could expedite an end to the Ukraine war. The INSS suggests that Pyongyang aims to strengthen its alliance with Moscow amid possible changes in U.S. foreign policy.

According to the NIS, Russia is compensating North Korean troops at approximately $2,000 per month, generating substantial revenue for North Korea amid severe economic challenges. Additionally, Russia is reportedly supplying North Korea with food and technological support, including space technology, to aid Pyongyang's military satellite ambitions. The NIS also indicates North Korean artillery is being exchanged for Russian food supplies, alleviating some of North Korea’s food insecurity.

Beyond these immediate benefits, some analysts, such as Rep. Wi Sung-lac, view North Korea's support for Russia as a strategic advantage. Wi suggests that North Korea, having actively fought for Russia, may now expect Russian military support in any Korean Peninsula conflict.
