Robert F Kennedy Jr. Sues Google and YouTube Over Constant Censorship
Kennedy uses the findings of collusion between the government and Big Tech to allege First Amendment violations.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., prominent Democratic presidential hopeful, is taking YouTube, and its parent company Google, to court. The lawsuit filed Wednesday pertains to alleged violations of Kennedy’s First Amendment rights, as he contends his speeches and interviews were expunged inappropriately from the platform. As the presidential primary elections loom, Kennedy boldly predicts this tactic of stifling discourse will persist.

Highlighting this act of censorship includes Kennedy’s speech at Saint Anselm College, as well as his interviews with Jordan Peterson and Mike Tyson. A focal point in Kennedy’s legal argument centers on an allegation of government overreach. Kennedy’s filing condemns the Biden administration for orchestrating what he views as a thorough attempt to silence dissenting voices. It clearly states, “this complaint concerns the freedom of speech and the extraordinary steps the United States government has taken under the leadership of Joe Biden to silence people it does not want Americans to hear.” Furthermore, it underscores that Kennedy is far from the only casualty in this censorship campaign, but his case stands out given his ongoing challenge to President Biden for the Democratic Party’s presidential ticket.

A team of security researchers at TU Berlin college announced a new attack on Tesla's AMD based infotainment systems, which allows them to run arbitrary software on the vehicle, gains root access to the car, and unlocks software-locked paid features.
The team says the jailbreak is unpatchable, it uses a voltage fault injection attack against AMD's Secure Processor.
They will present their findings and process at the Blackhat USA 2023 Conference next week.

If you're a developer, you may have heard of the Vim text editor, a legendary piece of software that improved on the original vi editor distributed in Unix systems. Released in 1991 and still maintained today, vim is used by millions and remains one of the most popular text editors of all time.
Vim's creator Bram Moolenaar has passed away at 62. His family announced (Google Groups link) his passing on August 5th:
It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that Bram Moolenaar passed away on 3 August 2023.
Bram was suffering from a medical condition that progressed quickly over the last few weeks.
Bram dedicated a large part of his life to VIM and he was very proud of the VIM community that you are all part of.
Bram was also the creator of the 'charityware' concept, where people could only vote on software features if they donated to a charity of the developer's choice.
Check out Bram's personal website to get a feel for who he was.
Rest in peace Bram, and thank you for your service to all of us!

You'd expect to make human connections on a dating app, but AI is being driven forward to 'assist' us:
- Match gave an update on a recent earnings call, Match owns dating apps Tinder, OkCupid, and Hinge
- Several new AI features were announced
- They are testing AI scanning and recommendation for your 'best picture', to take the stress out of picking one
- They've already been using AI on the backend
- In a survey, half of single men would consider using a chatbot to talk to matches, and 51% of women said they would use it to have multiple conversations
I bet the next thing we see is an 'dating assistant' AI that'll help you write messages, eventually it'll be AIs talking to other AI's. This directly contributes to the 'feebleness' from using technology and AI, we're literally unable to express ourselves.
Anyways - PSA that dating apps are moving in the direction of automated AI scanning for user's photos.

Payments giant PayPal said on Monday it has launched a U.S. dollar stablecoin, becoming the first major financial technology firm to embrace digital currencies for payments and transfers.
While stablecoins - crypto tokens whose monetary value is pegged to a stable asset to protect from wild volatility - have been around for years now, they are yet to successfully make headway into the mainstream consumer payments ecosystem.

An important legal case between Epic Games (creator of Fortnite) and Apple has taken a surprising turn. Epic Games had sued apple for disallowing other apps to link to payment methods outside of Apple's ecosystem. Apple forces any transactions on iOS through its In App Purchases service where it retains up to 30% cut.
Thinking about iOS's 58% market share in the United States and worldwide, this rule has a huge impact to both developers and users. Popular Nostr client Damus, recently neuterered the crypto tipping feature on their app (although I heard there's a workaround).
A judge ruled that Apple had violated California's Unfair Competition Law, but now that ruling has been given a stay - which puts a hold on that ruling and gives Apple 90 days to put in a petition.

Activist and academic groups in Mexico have spoken out against US and Candian claims that GMO corn is safe, sharing that the harm to the human body has been suppressed, much like Tobacco and that GMO corn furthers the endangerment of native plants and traditional cultivation.
Anthropological evidence shows that corn, squash and bean cultivation dates as far back as 10,000 years in Mexico. Over the millennia, Mesoamerican peoples associated these crops with a “sacred world view that survives to this day” both in religious and sociocultural structures.
A colloquial expression of corn “jiloteando,” referring to when young, tender ears begin to sprout silk, for example, comes from Xilonen, one of several Aztec gods based on the various stages of the plant’s growth.
“We are a country that has enjoyed the benefits of maize for centuries,” he said. “And it would be unforgivable if, whether through ignorance or apathy, we were to degrade our food by allowing the cultivation that vegetal Frankenstein that the transnational vandals insist on offering us.”

An interesting editorial by Thom Holwerda points out the current state of browsers on Linux. Linux gets treated like a second class citizen when it comes to browser support, especially in Firefox's case where Firefox is offered as the default browser for most distributions of Linux.
And Linux orgs that develop browser such as KDE and GNOME rely on big tech browser engines.
In an ideal world, the major stakeholders of the Linux desktop – KDE, GNOME, the various major distributions – would get together and seriously consider a plan of action. The best possible solution, in my view, would be to fork one of the major browser engines (or pick one and significantly invest in it), and modify this engine and tailor it specifically for the Linux desktop. Stop living off the scraps and leftovers thrown across the fence from Windows and macOS browser makers, and focus entirely on making a browser engine that is optimised fully for Linux, its graphics stack, and its desktops. Have the major stakeholders work together on a Linux-first – or even Linux-only – browser engine, leaving the graphical front-end to the various toolkits and desktop environments.
... Linux needs a browser engine that is independent of Google (and Apple), and takes Linux seriously as a platform.

A follow up to the previous article, where are the independent browser engines?
Building a browser engine is no easy task, but the SerenityOS dev team is currently building the Ladybird browser. It uses the custom made LibWeb browser engine and LibJS JavaScript engine.
It passes the Acid3 standards test meaning it can support basic browser functionality & styling. Although still in early development, you may want to try it out and participate in the development.

Youtube-dl, the world's most popular stream ripping software used to download Youtube is under attack.
In a recent lawsuit, music industry players Sony, WMG, and Universal sued the hosting provider of the Youtube-dl website, Uberspace.
The suit was upheld in a German court and Uberspace could be held liable. Uberspace's owner Jonas Pasche says this:
“The consequences of this will be that hosting providers receiving complaints will most likely kick out their customers without a court ruling, for things that might be perfectly legal. Otherwise, they have to fear being held responsible by a court that might see things differently.”
Although the website has been taken down for now, Uberspace will continue to fight the appeal in court.
