Youtube-dl, the world's most popular stream ripping software used to download Youtube is under attack.
In a recent lawsuit, music industry players Sony, WMG, and Universal sued the hosting provider of the Youtube-dl website, Uberspace.
The suit was upheld in a German court and Uberspace could be held liable. Uberspace's owner Jonas Pasche says this:
“The consequences of this will be that hosting providers receiving complaints will most likely kick out their customers without a court ruling, for things that might be perfectly legal. Otherwise, they have to fear being held responsible by a court that might see things differently.”
Although the website has been taken down for now, Uberspace will continue to fight the appeal in court.

A team of experts from NASA has recently spotted a colossal sunspot, predicted to expand and shift until it directly faces Earth in the coming week.
The scientists cautioned that this darker, cooler region of the sun might unleash powerful eruptions such as solar flares (intense bursts of high-frequency radiation) and coronal mass ejections (CMEs; vast solar plasma eruptions).
These types of eruptions have the potential to intersect with the Earth and interfere with satellite navigation and even trigger power outages, making sunspot monitoring far more crucial than mere scientific curiosity. In extreme cases, geomagnetic storms can induce electric currents in power lines, potentially damaging transformers and other components of a power grid.
“Because Mars is orbiting over the far side of the sun, Perseverance can see approaching sunspots more than a week before we do. Consider this your one-week warning: a big sunspot is coming,” experts from Spaceweather warned.

You can get most music and movies through Bittorrents. Here's how you set up qBittorrent for search, and how to set it up to keep yourself off of your ISP's radar.
Click each step to go to a more detailed tutorial for that step.
1. Enable Search

3. Use a USA IP Blocklist
4. Limit Number of Connections
5. Limit Connection Speed
6. Use a Different Port at Each Startup
7. Use a VPN with your system
There are so many options
on VPNs. We're not going
to attempt to tackle this.
I have been using these settings for almost 20 years without a VPN, and have never received a cease and desist notice from any ISP. Most tutorials recommend you use a VPN, but you can try these settings, and if your ISP leaves you alone, no need to pay for a VPN. If you get the letter, then you can get a VPN.
Note: You can do the exact same things in Transmission, except search.

The US Dept. of Treasury and IRS have announced a proposed set of regulations on the sale of digital assets to report sales and exchanges.
They would also provide a new form to their customers that would track the gain or loss on assets, so that customers could report their taxes accurately...
These new regulations are due to start 2026 for transactions in 2025.

A new investigation by 404 Media uncovered a collection of illegal content on Instagram's ad service. Items such as stolen credit cards, wholesale marijuana, counterfeit cash, scamming services were found as sponsored advertisements.
Its unclear if these are actual services or scams, there's been no response by Meta or investigation by law enforcement.

What's crazy to me is how Meta (owner of Instagram) moved forward with a new age-verification system last year, partnering with Yoti to conduct facial feature analysis, as well as ID verification - with the excuse of keeping kids safe. At the same time they have advertisements that no one would want kids to see.
They seem comfortable making money off of black markets while trying to convince us that their surveillance focused features are actually for their users protection.

I found this resource today on digging your own shallow water well using just PVC and household water houses. It can be done for less than $200.
These shallow water wells can reach water within 25 feet, they're not meant for drinking but suitable for irrigation.
This is huge for anyone near the water table.

Today I harvested some eggplants in the garden, these had been going for a few months and I thought theyd never fruit because they were constantly under attack by ants and aphids. Turns out they still made 5 eggybois.
Interesting thing about the fruit, theres a debate around whether there are male and female eggplants. One side calls it all a myth. The other says that you can distinguish sex by their belly button on the bottom. Smoothness and roundness means male, elongated unregular belly buttons means female. Female plants carry more seeds and are bitter to propagate the next generation.
With that guide we got 4 males and 1 female. Now time for eggplant curry! 🍆 🍽

Now you'll have to deploy your own instance if you want to avoid authenticating with Facebook, Google, or Microsoft (Github). But by deploying your own instance, you are effectively no longer anonymous, as you'll need to provide billing info to your host, or provide your home IP so folks can connect to it.
