Libertarian Activist Sentenced to Prison on Federal Cryptocurrency Charges

Attorney for Ian Freeman says issues will be brought up on appeal

A judge has sentenced Keene Free State activist and radio host Ian Freeman to eight years in prison for money laundering and cryptocurrency crimes.

Dozens of Freeman's supporters showed up at the U.S. District Court for his sentencing. Some were openly defiant to U.S. Marshals inside the courthouse, while others cried when the 96-month sentence was read aloud.

Because the sentencing hearing was in federal court, no cameras were allowed. Freeman's supporters gave him a standing ovation when he entered the courtroom.

A jury convicted Freeman of eight counts of federal financial crimes last year. Federal sentencing guidelines suggested 20 years, and defense attorney Mark Sisti said the eight-year sentence represented a generous reduction.

"These are very novel issues, and they will be addressed for the first time at the First Circuit," Sisti said. "This type of case and the issues that we raised in the motion to dismiss have never been at all presented nor considered."

At issue is the uncharted territory of regulating cryptocurrency. A jury found that Freeman was a go-between for scammers, allowing them to anonymize their ill-gotten money from retirees and other victims by converting it to Bitcoin.

Freeman told the judge he worked hard to weed out scammers from legitimate Bitcoin customers and that he, too, is a victim.

Journalists on the ground make their last plea over satellite communications as the entire Gaza strip goes into an internet blackout due to Israeli bombings.

IODA, a system for Internet infrastructure monitoring currently measures 20% connectivity in the entire Gaza strip.

We've all seen the real-time massacre through photos and videos over the past 2 weeks, and if you haven't - check out this channel. Airstrikes leveled entire districts, claimed critical infrastructure like water lines, residential buildings, hospitals, and churches.

Thanks to the brave journalists on the ground who have risked, and in many cases lost everything, the world is seeing darkness take its true form.

🚨BREAKING: AI Safety Summit: China, US and EU Agree to Work Together

China agreed to work with the United States, European Union and other countries to collectively manage the risk from artificial intelligence at a British summit on Wednesday aimed at charting a safe way forward for the rapidly evolving technology.

Some tech executives and political leaders have warned the rapid development of AI poses an existential threat to the world if not controlled, sparking a race by governments and international institutions to design safeguards and regulation.

In a first for Western efforts to manage its safe development, a Chinese vice minister joined U.S. and EU leaders and tech bosses such as Elon Musk and ChatGPT's Sam Altman at Bletchley Park, home of Britain's World War Two code-breakers.

More than 25 countries present, including the United States and China, as well as the EU, signed a "Bletchley Declaration" saying countries needed to work together and establish a common approach on oversight.

The declaration set out a two-pronged agenda focused on identifying risks of shared concern and building scientific understanding of them, while also developing cross-country policies to mitigate them.

Wu Zhaohui, China's vice minister of science and technology, told the opening session of the two-day summit that Beijing was ready to increase collaboration on AI safety to help build an international "governance framework".
