Breaking news today as the lead administrator of the jabber.ru XMPP server (running since 2000) discovered a mitm (man-in-the-middle) attack that had presumably been active since July 2023.
The attackers issued false TLS certificates (responsible for encrypting internet traffic) via Let's Encrypt. The networking of the XMPP service was changed to allow for passive wiretapping, forwarding connections through an unknown machine.
Although validated end-to-end encrypted communications were not effected in XMPP, the attackers were able to view and edit incoming traffic to the jabber.ru server.
From jabber.ru admins:
We tend to assume this is lawful interception Hetzner and Linode were forced to setup based on German police request.
Another possible, although much more unlikely scenario is an intrusion on the internal networks of both Hetzner and Linode targeting specifically jabber.ru — much harder to believe but not entirely impossible.
As of 20 Oct 2023, we’re still waiting for the adequate reply from Hetzner and Linode to our inquiries.
The sophistication of this attack points to a state level threat actor, one working in collaboration with Hetzner and Linode. Why the Russian XMPP server was targeted is the important question? The main hosting provider Hetzner is based in Germany, who we know is part of the Five Eyes Plus.
Is this passive surveillance directed towards Russian cybercriminals? Russians in general? Could it be counter-intelligence for the Ukraine/Russia conflict?

Journalists on the ground make their last plea over satellite communications as the entire Gaza strip goes into an internet blackout due to Israeli bombings.
IODA, a system for Internet infrastructure monitoring currently measures 20% connectivity in the entire Gaza strip.
We've all seen the real-time massacre through photos and videos over the past 2 weeks, and if you haven't - check out this channel. Airstrikes leveled entire districts, claimed critical infrastructure like water lines, residential buildings, hospitals, and churches.
Thanks to the brave journalists on the ground who have risked, and in many cases lost everything, the world is seeing darkness take its true form.
And now the technology that brings this to light is being taken down before Israel's planned ground operation - we may all be blind to what happens next.
Does any of the world's "leadership" have humanity left to stop this massacre?
Would we ever see Starlink satellites for the civilians in Gaza? So the world can know what's actually happening.

🚨BREAKING: AI Safety Summit: China, US and EU Agree to Work Together
China agreed to work with the United States, European Union and other countries to collectively manage the risk from artificial intelligence at a British summit on Wednesday aimed at charting a safe way forward for the rapidly evolving technology.
Some tech executives and political leaders have warned the rapid development of AI poses an existential threat to the world if not controlled, sparking a race by governments and international institutions to design safeguards and regulation.
In a first for Western efforts to manage its safe development, a Chinese vice minister joined U.S. and EU leaders and tech bosses such as Elon Musk and ChatGPT's Sam Altman at Bletchley Park, home of Britain's World War Two code-breakers.
More than 25 countries present, including the United States and China, as well as the EU, signed a "Bletchley Declaration" saying countries needed to work together and establish a common approach on oversight.
The declaration set out a two-pronged agenda focused on identifying risks of shared concern and building scientific understanding of them, while also developing cross-country policies to mitigate them.
Wu Zhaohui, China's vice minister of science and technology, told the opening session of the two-day summit that Beijing was ready to increase collaboration on AI safety to help build an international "governance framework".

WA Judge Rules That Car Manufacturers Can Legally Store Your Texts and Phone Calls Without Explicit Permission
In a move concerning privacy advocates, a federal judge last week ruled against reinstating a collective lawsuit accusing four auto manufacturing giants of contravening privacy protections in Washington state. The companies were alleged to have illicitly intercepted and documented private text messages and call records of customers using their car’s inbuilt infotainment systems.
The judge based in Seattle concluded that this activity did not constitute unauthorized privacy infringements according to state regulations.
The court’s decision favors the automakers Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, and General Motors, who find themselves as defendants in five parallel collective lawsuits revolving around this issue. A similar case against Ford had been earlier dismissed following an appeal.
The complainants from the existing four lawsuits had sought legal redress following a previous dismissal by another judge. In their judgment given Tuesday, the appellate judge asserted that the clandestine capture and logging of mobile phone usage did not violate the provisions of the Washington Privacy Act.

Here's an awesome writeup and simple demo by David Chisnall showing why its impossible to ban end to end encryption. A simple program written in a short amount of time could be used ontop of any existing messaging transport to achieve end to end encrypted messaging.

There's simply no way to ban encryption. The cat is already out of the bag.
If you're interested in a FOSS e2e messaging system, you may try XMPP. The easiest way to start is using the Snikket app, available on F-Droid and the iOS App store.
