Here are some pictures from my travels last week. We checked out the 'Greater World Earthship' community in Taos New Mexico, which houses 70+ earthships. I didn't expect there to be so many!

These homes are made out of recycled materials and often do not have any incoming water/power lines as the Earthship is designed to be completely self sufficient. Not to mention they're beautiful on the inside, I will definitely do a more extensive tour next time I go.

Have you looked into Earthship Biotecture?

#TBOT @ The Extraordinary Technology Conference

My dear peeps,

This past week I attended the Extraordinary Tech Conference in Albuquerque New Mexico! A big thanks to Steve Elswick & team who organized the conference and were gracious hosts.

I got to expand my horizons past digital technology and learned about revolutionary technologies that might just save the world, including: development of anti-gravity devices in the 1940s onwards, a new form of mathematics that could completely replace our current system, how Browns gas could be used to turn water into gold, and how GEET engines could turn trash into energy with fresh air as the byproduct.

The part that amazed me was that many of these scientists and investors were pursuing research of their technology with little outside help or investment. The community is tight knit but super welcoming and they are always ready to teach people what they know!

I really believe that many of the technologies at the conference have the potential to completely change how we think about energy, medicine, food, and water. I'm going to be writing detailed posts and releasing a short video about the event, but you can start learning right away:

There's a complete DVD set now on sale for the conference, which is a $100 off until 5PM PST on 8/18/2022. (today) It comes with 25 sessions in the conference and 3 workshops!

Why XMPP Is Better Than Any Other Messenger

Morning folks,

Today I got the urge to rally more people onto XMPP, so I'm summing up the many reasons why XMPP is the best messenger in terms of privacy, usability, and functionality. I believe it is a crucial tool to maintain free communications with a little more adoption and resources towards its development it could potentially surpass the likes of Telegram, WhatsApp, Google Hangouts and others.

Before we get into it, you might:

- Read the in-depth introduction to XMPP
- Remember Above Privacy Suite offers a paid XMPP service
- Join the #TBOT XMPP Group at tbot@group.chat.above.im (you'll know how to join by reading the article above)

📩 Get this post directly in your inbox

Alright, onto the 9 reasons why:

1. XMPP can be fully anonymous. When registering you only need to pick a username and a password. That's it.

2. Anyone can run an XMPP server, allowing for free & public providers. Take your pick from here: https://list.jabber.at/

3. When you send a direct message to an XMPP contact, there are only two servers that have record of this (yours and theirs, or only one if you share a server). This is unlike other platforms where messages can be replicated to others servers (Matrix), and pass through a centralized key lookup layer (Signal).

4. There are many XMPP clients (or applications) to choose from, both mobile and desktop. For Android we recommend Snikket/Conversations, for Linux we recommend Dino. And yes, there are clients for Windows and macOS!

5. You can send messages, files, voice messages - and make voice and video calls, which can all be encrypted easily using OMEMO encryption. (if your server supports it, which most do). All of these functions work seamlessly and perform well.

6. You can log into multiple devices simultaneously (desktop/mobile) and when both parties accept each others encryption keys, you will have synced up messages that are end to end encrypted. Talk about secure comms!

7. XMPP doesn't require the use of your phone's contacts, you can manage your own address book inside XMPP and pick whatever names you'd like.

8. Transparent and accessible development standards - anyone can propose an extension to the XMPP protocol. If a extension is approved, the developers who work on the clients and servers are not forced to implement it, and you as the server operator are not forced to enable it. In comparison, ask yourself how you might propose a change to the other privacy messengers that are regularly recommended? What would happen if they introduce a bad change to their protocol?

9. Did I mention you can easily bridge your XMPP messages and calls out to the phone network by using JMP.chat? All this without giving any more information, and $2.99 a month that can be paid in Bitcoin?! Its quite a vibe sending out a bunch of text messages from your computer and getting them back on your phone.

New Article By EFF: Fog Data Science, Selling Extensive Location Data to the Police, Generated By Apps On Your Smartphone
@takebackourtech

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/08/inside-fog-data-science-secretive-company-selling-mass-surveillance-local-police

This latest investigation by the EFF shows that private companies like Fog Data Science have billions of location points from millions of devices and sell this information to state, local, and county law enforcement.

What can their software do?
- "Area Searches" - similar to Google's Geofence warrants, law enforcement can pick a date/time and draw a location to find devices within their bounds.
- "Device Searches" - allows them to drill down into a device's lifetime and show location patterns (where people sleep and spend time)

Although Fog does not collect 'personally identifying information', its easy enough for to get associated data from other sources. One thing that would be easy for Fog Data Science to collect would be the AndroidID / Apple Advertising IDs, which are made available to every app - and these are also can be easily connected to a real identity.

Here's another example where Fog's tracking was used to identify interstate travel to prompt Coronavirus testing.

We can see immediately that the tracking happens over a long period of time (90 days), allowing a clear read of the location signals that specify the individual's home, their place of work, maybe even their favorite restaurants.

This is a truly disturbing violation of privacy, but one that you can defend yourself from:

How to protect yourself:
- Use alternative operating systems that don't put Google or Apple behind the wheel
- Audit your existing apps for trackers (its these trackers that feed into data surveillance like Fog)
- Switch to FOSS apps on F-Droid, or an alternative app without trackers
- Deny permissions to all of your apps that have trackers
- Use a VPN

Self Hosted Planet-Scale Navigation Is In Sight with Maps.Earth
@takebackourtech

Happy to have discovered maps.earth project recently which allows you to self-host your own maps server with place/address search and routing!

The Headway Project was born out of a frustration with the need to send current and future location data to a corporation in order to figure out how we’re getting from A to B. Offline-only maps apps can be frustrating to use, and sometimes suffer from performance problems, poor data coverage, or other technical limitations.

Headway aims to remedy these issues by bundling industry-standard software into a web app that’s easy to set up for yourself or your friends. No need to send your location data to anyone you don’t trust, not even
maps.earth.

Try out their demo here: https://maps.earth/

Expect to see this one day in Above Privacy Suite.

How Big Tech Revenue and Profit Breaks Down, by Company

︎In Q2 2022, about 72% of Alphabet’s revenue came from search advertising. Google dominates the search market—about 90% of all internet searches are done on Google platforms.

︎Amazon’s biggest revenue driver is e-commerce. However, the costs of e-commerce are so steep, that it actually reported a net loss in Q2 2022. As it often is, Amazon Web Services was the company’s main profit-earner this quarter.

︎Apple’s biggest revenue driver is consumer electronics sales, particularly from the iPhone which accounts for nearly half of overall revenue. Apple Music, Apple Pay, and Apple TV+ also generate revenue for the company. But in Q2 2022, Apple’s services branch accounted for only 24% of the company’s overall revenue.

︎Microsoft has a fairly even split between its various revenue sources, but similarly to Amazon its biggest revenue driver is its cloud services platform, Azure.
