WARNING: New Type of Telegram Attacks Fool Admins Into Bot Takeovers

Do you run a Telegram group? Be very careful when promoting bots to administration positions.

I have observed attackers mimicking the profiles of popular group management bots. Their plan is to sit in your group and hope you promote one of their fake profiles to become an administrator.

Once that happens they will attempt to take over your group from you. Here's an example of the attack.

Always search for bots by their exact username, confirm this on the bot's developer site.

#GiveUpGithub: Microsoft's For-Profit AI Programming Tool Potentially Violates Over A Half Million Copylefted Licenses

You may remember the launch of Github's CoPilot last year. This AI platform could suggest code based on a short denoscription of a program, across multiple languages.

GitHub admitted that during training of the AI model, the system encountered the GPL license more than 700,000 times. This license is a copyleft license, which allows for copying and modifying the code as you wish, as long as you give other people the same freedoms.

Of course, Github / Microsoft never released any code, and are even charging to use the software. The Software Freedom Conservancy calls on all FOSS developers to give up on GitHub.

Why Give Up GitHub?
There are so many reasons to give up on GitHub, but we list here a few of the most important ones:

Copilot is a for-profit product — developed and marketed by Microsoft and their GitHub subsidiary — that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to automatically generate code interactively for developers. The AI model was trained (according to GitHub's own statements) exclusively with projects that were hosted on GitHub, including many licensed under copyleft licenses. Most of those projects are not in the “public domain”, they are licensed under FOSS licenses. These licenses have requirements including proper author attribution and, in the case of copyleft licenses, they sometimes require that works based on and/or that incorporate the software be licensed under the same copyleft license as the prior work. Microsoft and GitHub have been ignoring these license requirements for more than a year. Their only defense of these actions was a tweet by their former CEO, in which he falsely claims that unsettled law on this topic is actually settled. In addition to the legal issues, the ethical implications of GitHub's choice to use copylefted code in the service of creating proprietary software are grave.

Bill Gates Push for Digital ID With $1.27 Billion Donation to Agenda 2030 ”Global Goals”

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced a $1.27 billion commitment to advance ”Global Goals” which are the 17 goals outlined in the UN Agenda 2030. As part of this, a ton of funding is going to push for global digital ID. Yes, you read that correctly. Global digital ID.

Remember when that was called a crazy conspiracy theory?

A whopping $200 million will be spent to ”expand global Digital Public Infrastructure” according to their website.

They say that this funding will be used to help countries with among other things public health threats, pandemic recovery and of course climate change. What exactly is this ”global Digital Public Infrastructure” you may ask?

Well let the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation tell you!

”This funding will help expand infrastructure that low- and middle-income countries can use to become more resilient to crises such as food shortages, public health threats, and climate change, as well as to aid in pandemic and economic recovery. This infrastructure encompasses tools such as interoperable payment systems, digital ID, data-sharing systems, and civil registry databases.”

There you have it. Bill Gates is pushing hard for digital ID.

Wait a minute there. Why do we need digital ID in order to help with public health threats and climate change? It certainly couldn’t be that there are plans for some kind of climate change passport tied to your digital ID, that would just be a crazy conspiracy theory…Right?

Smart Homes Get 'Smarter': Big Tech Put Their Collective Support Behind Matter

Is your smart home too decentralized? Not to fear!

Matter is the latest Unified Smart Home Standard that attempts to unify how smart devices communicate. Yes, that means all the home assistants, lighting, and thermostats.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance just launched Version 1.0 of the standard, now its 280 member companies can begin testing and certifying their devices. Members include Amazon, Apple, Comcast, Google, Huawei, LG, Samsung - and many more.

Rather than introducing any entirely new technology, which would slightly defeat the object of being a unifying force, Matter uses only existing standards: Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy for initial pairing, and Thread – a relatively recent networking protocol that connects products from different brands without the need for a hub.

You won't need a new Matter smart home hub though, the tech can easily be baked into existing devices. Smart speakers, routers, digital displays and the like are all prime candidates to be Matter controllers; the likes of Google, Amazon, SmartThings and Apple have already stated that a bunch of their existing devices will be upgraded to become Matter controllers.

The list of devices that Matter will cover is pretty exhaustive – lighting and electrics, heating and cooling, locks and security devices, windows and blinds, and TVs are all included – and the line-up of alliance members and participants reads like a who’s who of the tech world: Huawei, Oppo, Logitech, Xiaomi, iRobot and Panasonic are just some of the names on the 240-strong list.

My take: You remember when smart thermostats began turning themselves off? Now we can look forward to lighting and electronics doing the same. Perhaps if there's another lockdown, the locks will do us a favor and lock themselves.

Although technology and home automation doesn't have to be evil - it will likely end up that way with these companies leading. This smart tech is smart for whom exactly? For governments to enforce arbitrary limits on us? For corporations to spy on us continuously?

Your smart tech is evil, my dumb tech is wise.

Florida State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo Issues New mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine Guidance

"This analysis found that there is an 84% increase in the relative incidence of cardiac-related death among males 18-39 years old within 28 days following mRNA vaccination. With a high level of global immunity to COVID-19, the benefit of vaccination is likely outweighed by this abnormally high risk of cardiac-related death among men in this age group. 

As such, the State Surgeon General recommends against males aged 18 to 39 from receiving mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. Those with preexisting cardiac conditions, such as myocarditis and pericarditis, should take particular caution when making this decision."

EU Bans Crypto Services From Being Provided to Russia

In a recent press release, the European Union announced an eighth round of sanctions against Russia. These include the ban of crypto-asset wallets, accounts, or custody services. It also bans professional services like IT consultancy, legal, architecture, and engineering.

This could come as a response to Russia's legislation to accept and regulate cryptocurrency within its borders, after reaching agreement with the Bank of Russia. You may have not known the Russian Federation ranks 3rd in the world by mining power.

Cryptocurrency Exchanges in the EU are expected to follow the sanctions and ban Russian users from using its site. These exchanges would include Binance, OKEX, BitBay and others.

Will these sanctions give rise to the upstart of decentralized exchanges?

Starting a Food Co-op: Year 1

A local, family owned grocery store for 100 years, Russo’s, announced they were closing on Instagram. The land got bought for $36.5M to a real estate developer to build out labs, and sadly 200 employees were laid off as the business shuttered. The store had been a normal part of my shopping routine since I moved back to Boston in 2018, and for thousands of families a staple for everything from weeknight veggies to holiday specials.

WHY a co-op? Why is this model of building a business not more popular? Here’s my simple take: it’s harder. It’s harder to build consensus and practice democracy in action to get something done. The results of equal and shared ownership are immense though: you build up real power for those who don’t have access to it and along the way provide a ton of great food and jobs to your neighbors. We need more of these in our communities.

PinePhone User Goes Back To Android

What about the PinePhone / Linux Phones?

People regularly ask about the usability of Linux phones like the PinePhone and my answer is that its not ready for consumer use.

Here's a review of the PinePhone that shows why.

Sadly my PinePhone experiment has - after several months of running one as a daily driver - come to an end for now and I'm back on my Pixel 2.

Even running on the latest Manjaro build, as of September 2019, the phone is just ... crashy. Like, the UI goes away (black screen instead of a lock screen), then a while later the phone reboots. This happens several times a day.

In addition, it'll crash while taking or making calls. I'm not quite sure what's happening here but when it does, the usual effect is that the caller can't hear my audio, and then the phone reboots after the call.

Other than those two issues, though, the PinePhone *is* a usable daily driver! If I didn't need a highly reliable phone and have kids I wanted to remember when I'm old and senile, I'd still be running it.

Five Examples Of Bitcoin's Real World Utility

Many are blinded by the “strength” of the dollar and are unable to appreciate bitcoin’s utility.

To jog your memory, let’s go through five examples of what bitcoin can do that the dollar, other fiat currencies and gold cannot.

1. BITCOIN PROVIDES NEUTRAL, CENSORSHIP-RESISTANT MONEY

Look no further than the Canadian trucker protest that took place in early 2022. The Canadian government sought to require vaccination of every trucker that entered its country. At the sight of this obvious intrusion of human rights, the truckers decided to protest the mandate by essentially closing the capital city of Ottawa by blockading the streets.

One thing led to another, and before you knew it, the Canadian banking system began to “turn off” the money of every person involved in these protests. That’s right. Whether you were a trucker yourself, donated some money to the efforts or passed out food, you were on the hit list and you had your money turned off. Frozen. It was there, but you couldn’t do anything with it.

Today, it’s a trucker protest. What if it’s a women’s rights protest next? A protest against abuses by a country you’re allied with? Who decides?

Bitcoin sure as heck doesn’t. Bitcoin doesn’t care about the color of your skin, your political affiliation, the country you’re in, what videos you watch on YouTube, etc. If you play by the same rules that everyone else plays by, you can use bitcoin.

This is one reason why thousands of people donated bitcoin to the Canadian truckers’ cause. It was money that no one, not even the government or banking system, could stop. More than 21 bitcoin was raised in the effort by 5,000 donors, at the time totaling nearly $1 million in support.

Bitcoin is censorship-resistant money.

"Researchers in Australia show that gaming is for everyone, even a layer of brain cells hooked up to a computer chip. In a paper published Wednesday in the journal Neuron, researchers present the first synthetic biological intelligence able to adapt its behavior on a real time basis. Dubbed BrainDish, the system of brain cells on a multielectrode array was able to play one of the world’s earliest video games: Pong.

“We often think about neurons in a medical sense, or physiological sense; the exciting thing now is can we consider them for what they are, which are tiny information processors that are hugely power efficient. So, can we use them as a biomaterial to create something that we weren’t able to create with our existing technologies?” said the paper’s lead author, Brett Kagan.

Helmed by Cortical Labs, a biotechnology startup based in Melbourne, the study tests the DishBrain system’s ability of its neurons to organize and respond to electrical stimulus in real time to successfully play Pong, learning eventually how to correctly move the game paddle to hit the virtual ball."
