Little-Known Surveillance Program Captures Money Transfers Between U.S. and More Than 20 Countries

Hundreds of federal, state and local U.S. law-enforcement agencies have access without court oversight to a database of more than 150 million money transfers between people in the U.S. and in more than 20 countries, according to internal program documents and an investigation by Sen. Ron Wyden.

The database, housed at a little-known nonprofit called the Transaction Record Analysis Center, or TRAC, was set up by the Arizona state attorney general’s office in 2014 as part of a settlement reached with Western Union to combat cross-border trafficking of drugs and people from Mexico.

It has since expanded to allow officials of more than 600 law-enforcement entities—from federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement to small-town police departments in nearly every state—to monitor the flow of funds through money services between the U.S. and countries around the world.

🚨BREAKING: SWIFT Payments Network to Cut Access to Crypto Exchanges

The SWIFT payments network has made an extraordinary decision that will have widespread implications on cryptocurrencies.

The move will thwart cryptocurrency access to tens of millions of people worldwide.

One of the first crypto giants to notify users of the development this weekend, has been the world’s largest exchange, Binance.

“The banking partner that services your account has advised that they are no longer able to process SWIFT fiat (USD) transaction for individuals of less than $100,000 USD as of February 1, 2023. This is the case for all their crypto exchange clients,” said Binance.

“Please be advised that until we are able to find an alternative solution, you may not be able to use your bank account to buy and sell crypto with USD via SWIFT with a value of less than $100,000 USD.”

The Dangers of the NSA Hiring Recently Laid Off Software Engineers, Is There a Better Path?

I had written up a post a few weeks ago about the massive bubble burst in the big tech space leading to over 80,000+ layoffs this year (in 2023) alone, tracked by the website https://layoffs.fyi/

Now the NSA is looking to poach these software engineers in a hiring surge, reaching out through LinkedIn and other job hunting platforms, as well as technology message boards.

The NSA declined to say how much taxpayer money has been allotted for the hiring effort. Total spending on the intelligence community for fiscal 2022 was $89.8 billion.

NSA Cybersecurity Director Rob Joyce has deployed the slogan “you do you” in Twitter posts encouraging people to apply for work. He noted that previous marijuana use is no longer prohibitive for employment but ongoing drug use would be unacceptable.

That's a cute slogan, but anyone with a conscience should steer clear of this shadowy organization that helps cover up torture & kidnapping, spies on the activties of its allies, and surveils its own people en masse.

There are jobs out there that would weight far better on your psyche, spirit, and karma for that matter - you do NOT want to be treated like an intelligence asset.

And I always want to suggest better alternatives, so lets take a second to celebrate another software engineer's journey outside of big tech - who is now making money similar to his previous position at Google.

Filippo is now a full time professional open source software maintainer, he maintains 6 very well known software projects.

I’m not selling support hours or hard project deliverables. Instead, my clients get value in three ways:

- they mitigate the business risk of a project they depend on going unmaintained, with its security and development velocity implications;
- we establish a channel for reciprocal access, ensuring better outcomes for both them and the project; and
- at the highest contract tiers, I’m available for advice on any topic I am an expert in, beyond the strict scope of the open-source project.

Keep in mind Filippo is an expert and at the top of his field, but his story gives us something all to aspire to, and a new model we could take outside the field of computer engineering and into other spheres like agriculture, building - etc.

I haven't looked into every single one of the companies but most of the companies are creating disruptive open source tech, exactly the kind we need more of.

Please share this with your software engineer friends, encourage them to build software for humanity's sake - and not a digital prison for us all.

New Research Allows for Efficient Electrolysis of Seawater to Produce Hydrogen Gas

Ever wish you could use seawater for fuel in your car?

That day could be closer than we think thanks to to an international research team at University of Adelaide.

“We have split natural seawater into oxygen and hydrogen with nearly 100 per cent efficiency, to produce green hydrogen by electrolysis, using a non-precious and cheap catalyst in a commercial electrolyser,” - team lead and Professor Shizhang Qiao

Hydrogen is produced commonly through other fossil fuels like the steam reforming of natural gas. Only 0.1% of the world's hydrogen gas is produced through electrolysis, which does not require fossil fuels - but does require large amounts of power to split the water.

The discovery of a cheap catalyst of cobalt oxide with chromium oxide on its surface gives us the possibility of efficient reaction without needing an expensive platinum/iridium catalyst.

“Our work provides a solution to directly utilise seawater without pre-treatment systems and alkali addition, which shows similar performance as that of existing metal-based mature pure water electrolyser.”

The team will work on scaling up the system by using a larger electrolyser so that it can be used in commercial processes such as hydrogen generation for fuel cells and ammonia synthesis.

Google Announces 'Bard' - Conversational AI Service Rivaling ChatGPT

Today Google's CEO announced their conversational AI service. Impelled by ChatGPT's "success", it looks like companies are now racing to have the best chat bots. If you've been paying attention over the past few weeks, ChatGPT has learned what to and what not to say to its users, considering many topics out-of-bounds and giving its own slant.

No doubt Google's AI will do the same - you will only get the answers and information to approved topics & opinions.

I can see a bleak future where this AI will be pushed into the educational space, encouraging students to do even less thinking for themselves...
