Understanding Central Bank Digital Currencies

This week I joined a panel focused on Central Bank Digital Currencies & Privacy alongside cryptocurrency experts. Although everyone was in oppositions to CBDCs, our approaches still differed.

I advocated for raising awareness, rejecting new financial systems (CBDC / FedNow), and facilitating new exchange such as peer-to-peer markets, local trade networks, and barter.

I'll be releasing a clip from the panel soon!

In the meantime, this policy analysis from the CATO institute does a great job critiquing the promoted benefits of a CBDC, and identifying the real risks to the people.

It ends with a recommendation for Congress in the form of new legislation that bans the Federal Reserve and Treasury from issuing CBDCs.

New Peer-Reviewed Study Shows How Phones Can Improve EMF Safety

A new analysis and recommendations study was published by the International Commission on the Biological Effects of Electronmagnetic Fields (ICBE-EMF), highlighting the serious issues with the previous IEEE risk assessments and proposing new methods to reduce EMF with use of mobile phones.

Here are two of the recommendations:

- Blocking RFR emissions (but not reception) when its positioned close to the body
- Modifying the antenna emission pattern to radiate away from the head and body

I'll do a deeper dive into the study this week along with personal recommendations for users.

Sayboard: Offline FOSS Voice Keyboard Released

Sayboard is an offline FOSS voice keyboard that supports multiple languages. It's a continuation of a prototype developed ontop of the Vosk speech recognition toolkit.

It supports multiple languages and is incredibly easy to use. Although it lacks punctuation, it is accurate in its trannoscription.

Mark this as a huge win for the friendly software space.

Derrick Broze explains why he is running for Mayor of Houston and how this will help spread the message of Voluntaryism.

My name is Derrick Broze and I am anarchist. I am also running for Mayor of Houston for the 2nd time. I'd like to take a moment to explain this apparent contradiction for my supporters who might be confused, disappointed, or even angry.

First, let me share some background information on why I even feel this essay is necessary. As noted above, I have been identifying as an anarchist or voluntaryist for the last 12-13 years. This means that I reject all forms of imposed authority and seek to create a world where all relationships are voluntary and consensual. This does NOT mean that I advocate violent insurrection or want to watch the world burn. In fact, quite the opposite.

I am a voluntaryist because I know that you are powerful, beautiful, free, and capable of making your own choices and organizing your own life. I recognize that using the force of government to impose my will on others is absolutely morally wrong. This means that I also believe that when a majority of a population votes on something, and then forces the minority to live with it, it is also wrong.

Apple Forced To Allow Sideloading apps on iPhone

The Apple ecosystem has always been the one with the least freedom of choice, a great example of this the inability to download apps outside of the official Apple App Store.

One wonders if the 30% kickback for every app sale has something to do with keeping third parties off the platform.

But its all coming to an end soon as the EU's Digital Market Act (DMA) will require big tech companies to allow third party installations (Article 6 (4)).

Apple was unable to lobby against the law or gain sympathy for its cause, and now is making preparations to include a method to sideload apps as a part of iOS17.

It'll be interesting to see the Apple ecosystem change due to third party app stores. One such app store is Aptiode, which already offers an app store for jailbroken iPhones.

My hope is that people exercise their freedom of choice in the Apple ecosystem. If the alternative app store experience is better, and doesn't make the phone insecure like Apple claims - then it could pave the way for more people leaving the Apple ecosystem altogether.

I remember someone asking for a 'Shazam' like app, and now one's come out on Linux desktop.

Although it uses a third party API, I think we're a year away from seeing more open AI models that would could make an app like this self-hosted.

Mousai is a simple application that can identify songs similar to Shazam. Just click the listen button, and then wait a few seconds. It will magically return the noscript and artist of that song!

Note: This uses the API of audd.io, so it is necessary to log in to their site to get more trials.
