⚡️Decentralized Mastodon Instances Block Meta's New Project
@takebackourtech

We just relaunched our Mastodon server: https://connect.takebackourtech.org - and of course there's a new cause for concern between Mastodon and Meta.

A little background: Mastodon is a decentralized social network based off of the ActivityPub protocol. This protocol is popular as the foundation of the 'Fediverse' which provides decentralized applications as alternatives to centralized social medias. Users typically belong to a larger server which is responsible for subscribing to content and delivering notifications, just like email.

Now Meta is getting ready to release its own Twitter alternative named 'Threads', which uses the same ActivityPub protocol under the hood.

It should be possible for Facebook and Instagram users to migrate from those platforms onto ActivityPub, at the same time Meta may be trying to poach Mastodon users.

Many of the largest Mastodon servers have taken preventative action and blocked their server's from connecting to Meta URL's, waiting for more details about the launch and to get feedback from their users.

A mastodon user Panos Damelos had this to say:

Today we see a lot of concern about "what will the #Fediverse do" with #Meta. Wanna know what we will do? Everything and nothing. Because the Fediverse is not one entity. This is the essence of its decentralized nature - and that's cool. If your server intends to block Meta servers completely - cool. If not, cool again.

But if you expect a unified response on something like that, you're in for a disappointment.

Good news everyone! Since nobody said their wallet exploded while testing PocketChange, the newest version is out for every user, everywhere. That means GooglePlay, F-Droid, and GitHub, of course.

Check out https://anhdres.medium.com/monerujos-pocketchange-what-it-is-and-how-it-works-8e1ea1f7489e to learn about it.

In a nutshell, PocketChange is a setting that you can enable per account, and will create extra change every time you send Monero. That makes extra change to be quickly available in your following transactions, avoiding the 20 mins wait that you often encounter otherwise.

Get those wallets ready for some digital cash action. Buy (and invite) beers, mate sodas, coffee, vegan gluten-free organic nachos, whatever suits your gut, you bastards! See you in MoneroKon 😎

⚡️Update to EU Law Forces Removable Batteries by 2027
@takebackourtech

Remember when smartphones had removable batteries? It doesn't feel like too long ago. Now - those times could be coming back.

Last Wednesday, EU Parliament overwhelmingly passed new rules for design and production of batteries, including those in smartphones.

https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20230609IPR96210/making-batteries-more-sustainable-more-durable-and-better-performing

There are measures like carbon footprint declaration and digital battery passport 👀 - but the most consumer friendly measure will require removable batteries from electronic appliances.

Google, Apple & other manufacturers will need to completely rethink how they design their phones if they want to continue selling in the EU.

EU Legislation for Digital Euro Is Put on Hold: Source

A bill covering privacy and distribution of the central bank digital currency, originally scheduled for June 28, will be delayed

European Union legislation needed to underpin a digital euro, originally due to be published June 28, has been put on hold, CoinDesk has been told.

The move follows the leaking of the draft bill, which covers privacy and technical issues for the central bank digital currency (CBDC), and a statement by finance ministers that appeared to question the motivation for the plan last week.

The timeline for the draft bill, intended to be published ahead of a firm European Central Bank decision on whether to issue the currency in a digital form, has shifted several times. It was at one stage planned for May.

Cool SDK for Linux apps that make them fit to mobile screens (Linux Phones)!

Forwarded from Freedom Tech Index
Maui apps, based on Qt and the KDE desktop, are responsive apps that adjust and redraw according to the screen they are rendering on. An app that is responsive is also known as "working on all form factors." Scroll down through the article to see some example screenshots.

This is good for Linux phones, especially since most Linux phones can be docked and used as a desktop computer. All popular programs in Linux need to go this route so they can be used on Linux phones.

With Oran, India & Us Eye Breaking Chinese Stranglehold on Telecom Gear

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi works out business deals during his visit to the US, a good part of the discussions will be in the area of telecom and trusted sources and on exchange of technologies between the two countries, especially when it comes to development of Open Radio Access Networks or ORAN solutions that aim to break the stronghold of Chinese and some European companies on 4G, 5G and 6G technology, which is under developments.

India is increasingly looking at telecom technologies by opting for a disintegrated approach under the ORAN model, where different players pool in to build complex, integrated networks.

What is ORAN?

ORAN is meant to allow hardware and software used in cellular networks to inter-operate, irrespective of the vendor. RAN has traditionally been a proprietary or closed segment of the network...

India-US on ORAN, and iCET discussions between the NSAs

There have already been discussions around ORAN during high-level meetings between India and the US, such as those during the recent conversations between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his American counterpart Jake Sullivan. It has also been a part of the discussions at the level of Quad, where the effort is to break the Chinese monopoly, especially when national security and cyber threats are proving to be real dangers for countries across the world.

Several American telecom and IT companies, such as Cisco, are looking to partner Indian companies in the development and rollout of 4G, and 5G solutions while working on 6G development. This also figures on the list of priorities being attempted through the Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) between India and the US, launched in January. The iCET's focus is on driving enhanced cooperation between private industries as well as research and scientific institutions in the US and India in next-gen technologies such as AI, telecom, ORAN, space, quantum computing and semiconductors.

⚡️What Data Do Cars Collect and How To Opt Out?
@takebackourtech

In this recent piece on Wired, popular cars were ran through a 'Vehicle Privacy Report' which analyzes the terms of service and privacy policy for specific vehicles to give you an idea of the data that is collected.

You can submit a VIN number to get your own report here (please read their privacy policy as well!):
https://vehicleprivacyreport.com/

The company behind the tool:
https://privacy4cars.com/

Important points:
- Manufacturer collects data like (identifiers, biometrics, location, synced phone data, users)
- Manufacturers sell data (affiliates, service providers, insurancce firms, government, and data brokers)
- Manufacturers will provide data to government or law enforcement when there's a legal request

I've used the data privacy documents from each manufacturer to make a short summary - please note that this collection may only occur in specific cases (using different features) and may not apply to every car model.

Analysis of modern cars (2022):
- Generally Collected:
Name, Address, DL #, Phone #, Email
- Toyota - vehicle location, odometer readings, voice records (using voice commands or calling the response center), diagnostics, some models use facial recognition, unknown data collection from phone. Data transmission can be turned off on the privacy hub
- Honda - collects SSN, DL#, location, fuel levels, tire pressure, battery charge, trip log, airbag, search content ,call history, voice commands, driver behavior. Some data collection can be opted out of through Honda's apps
- Ford - owner information, vehicle data,, tire pressure, charging information, drive data, seat-belt, precise location / direction, speed, media analytics + voice recognition
- Chevorlet - Owner identifiers, battery igition, window data, location, route history, speed, camera images and sensor data, security alerts, Wi-Fi data usage, home energy usage (charging / discharging at home)
- Jeep & Ram - owner information, SSN, DL #, dates and times of use, speed, trip details, routes, cruiser control, refueling activity, battery levels, images fro mcameras, face and fingerprint (if enrolled)

I always knew cars were data traps but now have a better understanding of all of the different things these companies can collect and use against you if requested by law enforcement.

This was just a quick summary, and more deep dives are needed, we did not cover what data is collected from your phone (ever wonder what happens when you sync contacts?).

Why would anyone buy a new car today?

What do y'all think? Should I make a video on this issue with more research?
