There are no servers from Nintendo themselves for online play, the consoles connect between themselves
Guess they just wanted to copy their competition, their execution was pretty bad tbh

There is a sad thought that Nintendo is waiting for Kaze Emanuar to release Return to Yoshi's Island to strike him with a DMCA, which would probably end with another year of no Kaze videos (and a sad cat video)
